Gender critical in Ireland

Just wondering if there are many others out there. Was reading a political pamphlet and it was going on about self ID and how important it is. I just don't agree and think it's so damaging to change the definition of what a woman is. And the definition of a man too, I guess. Sex based rights are under threat in Ireland. Fed up with all the nonsense. Wondering what other Irish mumsnetters think.

See section 23 of the bill. Can't seem to link it but available via oireachtas.ie. Sorry I meant it was thought about prior to the bill passing. It had been thought that a person with a grc may commit or be be victim of an offence which could only occur if they were their biological sex. The offense would still be said to have occurred but there doesn't seem to have been further thought on the consequences of that offence...e.g. if the offender had a grc where would he be held, impact on prison staff and other prisoners, would the victim have to refer to him as she in court or hear him being referred to in this way etc.

"Based on International best practice" is a worrying phrase considering the UK, Canada and many states in the US let men who say they are women go to the female estate and it is the women who object who are sanctioned. Most women's prisons are set up to deal with lower levels of violence and are simply not equipped to deal with these males. In Canada, males (including rapists, paedophiles and murderers) are moved from higher security prisons to more open style prisons which may have mother and baby units. Luckily, due to our low population, we don't have as large a scale a problem.

Thank you @Believerinbiology.
Yes, that's worrying from Simon Harris.

I hope you don’t mind a Scot butting in but I just wanted to say thank goodness for real journalism at last!
The glass wall that surrounded Sturgeon was broken, in Scotland by one woman standing up and challenging her where and when she least expected it and it all started to unravel.

This is your chance now to do the same with Leo the Liar & the rest of the vile, misogynistic bawbags.

Please keep up the pressure, every way you can. we women in Scotland, England & Wales have your backs, we knew about BK, we wrote , emailed and sent copies of Trans to Leo and many others in your Parliament. They knew, they all knew.
There is proof out there now that Leo the Liar knew.
Please go to the Let Women Speak events if you are able. Many Scottish women are planning to join you in solidarity & friendship just as many of you joined us in Glasgow.
We can & will continue to help you in this fight for your and our rights and the safeguarding of our children.
Solidarity 🇮🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@RhannionKPSS thank you! Definitely now is the opportunity, the main media censorship & pro trans propaganda here has been so demoralising to women. The momentum needs to gather pace however. I feel that the BK saga needs to go global then the govt will finally act. They want to be seen as progressive & woke when in fact the way they are trying to suppress women's rights is anything but.

RhannionKPSS · 23/03/2023 00:54

My friends in Australia, Canada and South Africa know about BK. It’s out there now.

It is a tragedy for the wee boy who grew up to be that person, but he is so dangerous, women are not shields & they deserve to be safe. BK needs to be somewhere more appropriate for his own sake. He is clearly always going to be a danger to others especially women & girls.

It's interesting listening to the news outlets cover the World Athletics decision - Today FM news just said TW won't be able to compete in athletics, full-stop. RTE 9 o'clock news got it almost right in the main segment differentiating between TW and the female category, but the pre-recorded report was very confusing: "there are currently no female transgender athletes competing on the elite international stage" - huh??!

Leopardprintonsie · 23/03/2023 21:29

@Jumpersaurus they want to make it look like it's such a harmless minority.. Look no further than that man who playing ladies gaa, he doesn't even have the respect to even try to make himself look remotely womanlike..

RedLemonade · 24/03/2023 08:14

Agree with you elgreco.

Utterly biased reporting on Morning Ireland today about the World Athletics decision to ban transwomen. They had a transwoman “scientist” (they kept emphasising the “scientist”) who essentially said that once the testosterone is lowered trans athletes lose any advantage. And heavily implied that World Athletics came under pressure to fold and ban transwomen. The absolute implication was that the science supported transwomen competing against women and that it was nebulous vested interests that forced their decision.

No women interviewed of course. God forbid!

VaddaABeetch · 24/03/2023 08:21

& WTF is a scientist? What are the qualifications, in what area of science?

maybe somebody who identify a scientist?

Believerinbiology · 24/03/2023 08:24

Didn't hear it but was the scientist Joanna Harper whose studies show trans athletes retain male advantage (despite how JH spins it) and the obvious bias in a transwoman doing the study on transwoman who want the results to show no advantage. This is whose work the IOC based their initial trans guidelines on. JHs current study is down to 1 individual Emily Bridges, a cyclist who competed as a man weeks before doing sad face news stories because they were barred from a women's race at a late stage. The 3 other participants dropped out. Nope no bias at all .... Refusing to look at the research that shows advantage does not mean it doesn't exist. Think Sharron Davies has linked to loads of studies.

RedLemonade · 24/03/2023 08:49

The fact that RTE is the only medium through which a lot of people are hearing about this is worrying though. Their bias on this is just such a disgrace.

LadyEloise1 · 24/03/2023 08:54

One of the topics on the Sky News app is that Keir Starmer has been advised will lose the next election on Day One "....unless he shifts his trans rights position Labour strategists have warned..."

British schools have also banned trans kids competing. Announcement came minutes after the World Athletics announcement. C'mon Ireland & follow suit. The ripple effect is happening.

Genesis1v27 · 24/03/2023 13:13

The clip from Morning Ireland this morning:

World Athletics bans transgender athletes from competing in female events

Joanna Harper, scientist and trans athlete speaks to Kate Varley as the World Athletics Council announces they are to ban transwomen from participating in female category events; Prof Donal O'Shea, Endocrinologist, also gives his reaction to the decision.

ladymactíre · 24/03/2023 13:43

JH - "reasonable compromise between inclusion and fairness" - what does this even mean?! We should compromise on fairness to facilitate inclusion? A bloke twice the size of a girl in a team sport is not inclusion, is endangerment. Make a separate league
"There are people saying we should move to a situation where there is no gender differences in sports and compete equally"- are we even entertaining this idea? Just tell women not to engage in sports anymore

Leopardprintonsie · 24/03/2023 13:50

Not one woman's voice or woman athlete allowed voice their relief at the new ruling..

butterfliesanddoves · 24/03/2023 15:06

The RTE presenter seemed very biased. The suggestion that the decision by World Athletics could result in children starting on blockers!
World Athletics made it clear that their decision was based on fairness in sports.
The implication that women should make way for biological males, to prevent children going down a medical pathway is outlandish.
As for the scrapping of gendered sports 🙄
What is wrong with RTE? Do women and girls not matter?
Though they probably couldn't interview any female athletes, as the backlash for the woman would be huge.

ItsaMetalBand · 24/03/2023 15:06

Petition signed!

PleasantBirthday · 24/03/2023 15:15

The suggestion that the decision by World Athletics could result in children starting on blockers!

Of course, blockers have terrible effects on children's bones which means that there's a chance that kids who do start them will never have the bone density necessary to be successful athletes.
