Gender critical in Ireland

Just wondering if there are many others out there. Was reading a political pamphlet and it was going on about self ID and how important it is. I just don't agree and think it's so damaging to change the definition of what a woman is. And the definition of a man too, I guess. Sex based rights are under threat in Ireland. Fed up with all the nonsense. Wondering what other Irish mumsnetters think.

Unfortunately @PleasantBirthday they already did that on the back of the 'gay marriage' referendum. Sex is no longer a protected characteristic it's now gender Sad

The Equal Status Acts 2000-2018 ('the Acts') prohibit discrimination in the provision of goods and services, accommodation and education. They cover the nine grounds of gender, marital status, family status, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, religion, and membership of the Traveller community

Believerinbiology · 08/03/2023 10:29

You are on to something there Pleasant. It will potentially remove the words woman/women from the constitution and replace it with gender. While I was already deeply skeptical of this referendum for reasons similar to preceding posters but your one sentence has highlight the biggest issue.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 08/03/2023 10:31

@johnnytightlips yes, totally agree. There doesn't appear to be any party or person in Dáil Eireann who objects to this. In fact, if you voice any disapproval you're now compared to Enoch Burke. I despair.

Believerinbiology · 08/03/2023 10:34

Sex has been gradually removed from all bills and where it remains is used interchangeably with gender. Is the constitution the last place that the unique role of women with regards to their biology is specifically referenced? I don't particularly like the line about women's role in the home but fear what we could potentially lose if it is removed.

Believerinbiology · 08/03/2023 10:36

If the Burke family didn't have a long standing reputation for similar behaviour on other issues I would have been donning my tinfoil hat and suggesting they were TRA plants. They are doing so much harm to the ability of parents to raise rational concerns and be heard.

Thanks for that @johnnytightlips I agree with everything Michael McDowell has said in that article. Pity it's behind a paywall so more people can't see it. I wonder what stance the tabloids will take on this issue. In one way, I'm hoping there will be huge public debate between now and the November referendum but on the other I'm conscious of having to temper my arguments and dreading locking horns with people as I am sure it will happen...

Enoch Burke is getting more & more support later.. I think parents might finally be cottoning on that's he's right.

The Daily Mail are good & are reporting the anger amongst parents.

The push back has started this morning in the UK. Rishi Sunak is supporting. Well done to the politicians involved & the Daily Mail for telling it as it is.
Needs to happen in the Dáil but the won't say boo to the trans groups.

ladymactire · 08/03/2023 14:48

Hopefully the push back will start here as well, rather sooner than later. I find that many people don't have any idea of what's happening, and many don't care

I'm not sure I attached the screenshot right, it's the first time i do that. I don't think it's readable. Anyway it is on Twitter

Leopardprintonsie · 08/03/2023 14:59

Thanks @ladymactire (great user name!) I'll look it up. I think the fact that no newspaper or rte are reporting is so dangerous. The Daily Mail in fairness has always highlighted & from parents perspective.
The push back needs to start quickly. I'm not having my dc exposed to any of this. Completly inappropriate.

Another link here... Rte, Times or Indo not reporting.. No surprise there.

Genesis1v27 · 08/03/2023 15:03

Also, I came across this interview published today, I haven't watched it but it may be of interest here:

Thank you all! I'm a bit inept when it comes to links and attachments on forums.
My girls are finished with school, they're both at uni now, but I can't help being worried about the future of education.
I am also deeply worried about the coming referendum and I hope it will be properly discussed and debated before November.

Genesis1v27 · 08/03/2023 16:21

In case anyone missed it, Mary Kenny has published the text of the keynote speech she would have given at University of Limerick today (but was disinvited from) in the The Irish Independent:

Mary Kenny: I never foresaw our 1970s feminism becoming the mainstream movement it is today (archive link)

I caved and subscribed to the indo online to read this.
The least she deserved. She was one of my first introductions to feminism, utterly shameful the way she was treated by UL.
It would have been a great speech and discussion.
I see Collette Colfer had an interview dropped off Dublin City fm today too.
While Lillith "smash all terfs out of existence" got a prime spot.
IWD my arse.

elgreco · 09/03/2023 07:55

I am going to vote against the change of wording in protest.
Trans flags at the IW day march....we can't have anything just for women anymore.

WaveyGodshawk · 09/03/2023 09:01

I've been thinking of doing the same elgreco
Like other posters, I don't trust this government one bit.
