Gender critical in Ireland

Just wondering if there are many others out there. Was reading a political pamphlet and it was going on about self ID and how important it is. I just don't agree and think it's so damaging to change the definition of what a woman is. And the definition of a man too, I guess. Sex based rights are under threat in Ireland. Fed up with all the nonsense. Wondering what other Irish mumsnetters think.

Spotted in Dublin, guess which is the women's toilet!

They repeatedly tell you there is no clash with womens rights and yet this happens. Isn’t there a phase about judging by actions and not words.

About a decade ago I was in a nightclub in Dublin with a group of friends. I got separated from my friends at one stage as happens with drink involved. One guy approached me and I wasn’t interested. He gave off major creep vibes and as drunk as I was I just wanted him to go away. He followed me around for ages despite me telling him to F off. This particular nightclub was absolutely packed and it was hard to find security so I ended up hiding in the ladies for awhile so I could compose myself. One of my friends came in and we walked out together and the creep was still hanging around outside waiting for me. We found the group again and one of the lads threatened him and off the creep went. If that happened me now he would feel perfectly entitled to enter the toilets after me and I wouldn’t be able to say anything without being dismissed as phobic. Sometimes I feel glad I only have boys as I think our society is getting worse for girls.

bellinisurge · 08/12/2022 17:02

That's so gross @Crunchingleaf . Had similar myself. So-called unisex bathrooms just gives creeps license to creep. Urinary leash 2.0

elgreco · 08/12/2022 18:17

On the bright side, a project I am working on was going to have unisex toilets and they have just changed to 2 separate facilities. I must ask why.

Abhannmor · 09/12/2022 08:21

Don't be giving them ideas @elgreco ! They might change it back?.

Abhannmor · 10/12/2022 16:36

The Guardian have a homage to Fr.Ted with Pauline McLynn and Ardal O Hanlon.

Bit ironic given the way they treat Graham Linehan. Anyway , bit of a bunfight on the Guardian Facebook page. The usual ' Linehan is a bollix ' stuff with no arguments or logic.

Just came here to vent !

takeawaydinner · 10/12/2022 16:55

And the Examiner has this response to Hadley Freeman recent Times article, or should that be Hayley Freeman 😂.
To be fair to the writer, she doesn't seem to be a deep thinker. Her version of feminism is not only inclusive of everyone, it also requires women to "Be Kind".

Abhannmor · 10/12/2022 18:40

Jennifer Horgan seems nice but naive. We can ignore this tiny number of violent men in female prisons. Only 3 or 4 in Limerick. But this is more than 10% of the inmates. A figure which can only grow. Who wants to be stuck in the Joy if they're a sex offender?

HilarysMantelpiece · 11/12/2022 12:47

Thanks takeawaydinner for referencing the Examiner article.

What a load of guff.

I am pretty articulate and could prob write 5 paragraphs to counter Jennifer's article, but it can be summed up as "ol' guff" with a side-dish of lacking thinking. 🙄

siucra · 11/12/2022 13:41

RTE is giving seminars about gender ideology to its staff, which I think is worrying. I can’t believe it is happening.

VaddaABeetch · 11/12/2022 16:05

I work for a semi state, I’ve had the old nonsense about more trans than redheads & the gender Barbie rolled out.

Ive asked questions, I’ve politely queried but I get shushed & told I need to educate myself.

Abhannmor · 11/12/2022 22:04

What a lot of bollocks. 13% of Irish people are redheads - the highest % on the planet. Are they seriously stating that more than 1 in 8 ppl here is trans. Where are they all ?

VaddaABeetch · 12/12/2022 03:53

@Abhannmor well you need to educate yourself obviously. Trans people are everywhere besides Intersex. Bigot. Just like gay people years ago & stuff.

I don’t understand how sane, intelligent people in my organisation are accepting this guff.

Abhannmor · 12/12/2022 07:34

It's scary @VaddaABeetch . People in positions of authority who have no grasp of statistics , never mind biology.

But in a year or so there will be a new training workshop entitled Sorry , We Got It All Wrong.

Totally agree that it is bollocks when you look at the population at large. But when I hear about what's happening in some schools I wonder what the stats would look like if you took convenient snapshots of certain groups or in certain schools: 25% of girls in a 6th class asserting that they have a gender identity. These are kids who from as young as 3rd class are being introduced to "the flags" and choosing the ones they think fit them best. I don't know if you're allowed use the word grooming here but I'm struggling to think of a better word for when you target kids with tritely packaged and neatly labeled pick 'n' mix identities at the stage where they are all about trying to work out who they are, developing sexually, considering their sexuality, their place in the world, critically examining the adult world and the kind of adults they think they'd like to be, looking at the role models touted on SM, the porn saturated expectations and kicking back against their parents and all things "old-fashioned". So yes it is bollocks but there seem to be people out there working actively to make it so amongst teens. They should not be allowed near our schools and yet they are being welcomed in, their propaganda is being worked into the curriculum and ROG is handing our money, taxpayers money, to promote their initiatives.

This is my first time contributing to this thread, although following and gained huge amount of information. Thank you all.

But it has finally happened, it was a matter of time. The HSE has embraced pronouns. The whole pronouns are been encouraged to be added to signatures.

I'm gonna be in so much trouble as I will not be playing along.

Carriemac · 13/12/2022 08:07

Do not play along . There are some great responses to this on the feminism boards so don't be bullied into it

Abhannmor · 13/12/2022 08:24

Yes , what @Carriemac said. I'm no legal expert but I don't think any employer can compel the use of pronouns. There are threads about this in Feminism Women's Rights.

I bet lots of people will simply decline to use them.

takeawaydinner · 13/12/2022 11:10

Didn't the HSE try to change the Cervical Check information to gender neutral while leaving all male health information referring to men? This was after the scandal of women dying due to incorrect results.
I gave a look at the HSE information on rainbow badges.

🚩The Gender Unicorn
🚩Suicide statistics that I think have been shown to be dodgy?
🚩Homosexuality is same gender attraction
🚩Tells staff who I think are overwhelmingly female in front line roles to "check their privilege".

I couldn't see a date of publication but it is part of the strategy for 2019 to 2024.

On the positive side they seem to acknowledge that people shouldn't be forced to declare their pronouns as it might be outing, though not because women might have the right to just say no 🙄. They confirm that it is opt in, so I think the uptake might not be widespread.

I don't believe people are accepting it, or at least I don't think they are embracing it, more like internally rolling their eyes.
But they're afraid to say something in case they get called hateful bigot - public shaming is a very powerful thing. I'm in awe of the brave women who stand up and speak out about this, it's very difficult.
Which is ridiculous in itself when you think about it - it's like a collective madness or something.

Abhannmor · 13/12/2022 17:29

@Farmageddon Historians will view this period as we look at millennarian crazes of the Medieval times. The Dutch Tulip mania or the witch trials of the 16th and 17th century.

@takeawaydinner I went to check my privilege - which I usually keep in that cupboard under the sink as I don't use it very often. And there it was , gone!

Ah well . I just have the name of having it now.

HilarysMantelpiece · 13/12/2022 18:13

I think we have more recent parallels Abhann ... McCarthyism in the US (hence Miller's play The Crucible).
Or, Genesis1v27 linked to this piece on another thread: hxstem.substack.com/p/from-russia-with-love-science-and

Sometimes, I do wonder if it's just me? and am I now the "old dear who's out of touch".
But, then reality bites again....... humans cant change sex.
I will not be adding pronouns to my email handle.

I am already exceedingly kind, and have no need to publicly demonstrate it by colluding in a lie.

DublinFemale · 13/12/2022 18:23

All changes like this start as opt in with HSE, until a memo comes down from National HR making it policy.

Genesis1v27 · 13/12/2022 18:59

@ArabellaScott just posted a link here to a piece in The Critic by Victoria Smith responding to the language about "dirty" feminism in the article by Jennifer Horgan in The Examiner. It's worth a read.

Yes, I agree. Or possibly looked back on as part of a series of ridiculous social contagions that broke out during the early 21st century - brought on by, or at least fuelled by social media and internet access.
