Gender critical in Ireland

Just wondering if there are many others out there. Was reading a political pamphlet and it was going on about self ID and how important it is. I just don't agree and think it's so damaging to change the definition of what a woman is. And the definition of a man too, I guess. Sex based rights are under threat in Ireland. Fed up with all the nonsense. Wondering what other Irish mumsnetters think.

Aww, thank you!
There was no better time or place* to post it anywhere, and at census time there was no GC media push to protest there? If so, I missed it. GC is lower key here, as we're captured more. I'm also generally unconnected, and only heard about Woman's Space Ireland this week, which makes me think -

How cool would it have been to promote women writing their messages on this census 'space', and then share the images en mass in anonymity to force conversation now?

I'm shadow-banned on Twitter and often mistaken for a bot, so no point 🤷🏻‍♀️. Feel free to share I guess ? but it feels like it shouldn't be alone.

It's Posca acrylic pens, pencil and archival ink. I'm hoping it doesn't stick to the page above, frankly! I'm having fun thinking of someone in enlightened 🤞🏻 2122 hitting the books and figuring out the stickers creators. I originally had a running list of ballsy women* running around the sides, but it didn't 'pop' and then got the sticker and post-it idea. A lady before me had a loose personal note stuck in and the census man had to remove 😮

*I wish I'd worked some of it in - as it appears Maya Forstater's case will be so important in UK workplaces, and as neighbours, it certainly helps the zeitgeist.

3timeslucky · 06/12/2022 14:26

That's really cool! I wrote an angry piece in that space with so much to say that my daughter was laughing at the teeny tiny writing I used to try and fit it all in. But THAT is so much more effective.

OT, but what does shadow banned mean?

As the census has come up, and as tomorrow, the 6th December 2022, is the centenary of the Irish Free State coming into being - where all women got the vote instead of only women of property, maybe it's the time to share my artwork from this year's census comment sheet.

Hopefully, by the time it's seen again, 100 years will have softened any blowback for my family at my terven shout-outs! 😂

Wow, that's so cool. It would be great printed on a t-shirt or something, well done!

Babasghost · 06/12/2022 18:20

I to missed the conference because it wasn't advertised. I'm on the email lists but I didn't get an email.
My personal experience , and I feel extremely isolated here in rural Roscommon is that I have felt when I've interacted with the coubtess and the Gaelic named one that they don't want anyone who is from the UK in origin.
When I've posted on Irish Twitter the level of go home tan comments is high.

So I'm a bit sceptical about how they selected some nsmes from the email group but not the others.

Surely together we are stronger and the tans slurs are just as stupid as the right wing ones.

Maybe it more important to be Ireland for the Irish to maintain purity enough for left wing Irish men to take you seriously? than maintain women's rights no matter whether they are immigrants or not?

Maybe it's just clerical weirdness not selectivity?
Either way I think that there are many of us, not yet engaged or used in the fight here, and that's a real waste of drive and talent.

Can we organise a let women speak for ourselves?

Babasghost · 06/12/2022 18:22

Ps I see Sinead o Connors just come out as a terf!! Yippeee

3timeslucky · 06/12/2022 19:30

I've not come across any anti-English/British sentiment from Irish GC women tbh (though I've seen the TRAs suggest that it is all a British import or that we're all under some nefarious British influence). Could the Twitter comments you saw be from them?

You're 100% correct that all women here (from any and every background, ethnicity, political persuasion) need to be standing together to push back on this issue.

Wouldn't it be great if Womens Space Ireland could build on what happened and have a bigger and more open event where even more of us could gather together. Hopefully we'll see that in the New Year.

3timeslucky · 06/12/2022 19:31

PS where can I find Sinead's views? No better woman ;-)

HilarysMantelpiece · 06/12/2022 19:46

@Babasghost That is interesting about the "go home tan" comments.
I haven't seen that mindset from GC women
There is a notion that the GC community are all West Brits, English imports or befuddled natives who cant think for themselves.

Usually, the comments come from individuals who themselves are "new to the parish" (to use the Irish Times terminology). Often with names that contain a suspicious númbér of fádás.

@3timeslucky like you, I wrote and wrote in the space. I got a lot in! And, I think I recall that it was the Countess group who suggested putting Gender Critical as your religion.

Genderwoo · 06/12/2022 22:04

Good to see people used the box - it will be a fascinating space to pick over in a century - GC, TWAW and MRA rhetoric - anything political at all! Social history.

Babasghost, I also keep hearing about things after they happen (there was a gathering Glinner spoke at that I'd have liked to attend recently) and had months long difficulty getting onto email lists last year. Perhaps safety concerns re: meets, or they are sifting out the 'monitor' type the FWR section get?

3timeslucky, Shadow-banning on Twitter means your comment is always nested in 'show replies' area and doesn't get engaged with by design - not that it was amazing tweets or anything. If you look at how to remedy it - I read to subscribe to ideologically different accounts 🤷🏻‍♀️, and even then, a Twitter maven looked me up on an analytical tool and told me it was near impossible.

3timeslucky · 07/12/2022 08:09

@Genderwoo AFAIK it is about safety. We've all seen the behaviour in the UK and the US and there was enough of a reaction here to a lone woman with a placard to give grounds for concerns that Irish TRAs are no more capable of behaving themselves than those in the UK or US (and elsewhere). It isn't just about physical safety though. There are women I spoke to at the conference who fear that their jobs could either be at risk or their place of employment could become deeply unpleasant if they were "outed" as GC. It is truly mad and deeply troubling but that is the reality. The mailing lists weren't used for the conference.

3timeslucky · 07/12/2022 08:19

Just adding, I'm not in any organisation and I do understand the short-comings of the approach adopted (while also understanding it). I think there were hundreds of other women who would have attended if they had known about it.

Spotted in Dublin, guess which is the women's toilet!

Sinead is always ahead of the curve

I attended a Harry Potter thing with my kids + their friends in Citywest. It was in maybe 2017?

Similarly, the girls loo had an A4 printed sign with "Gender Neutral" sellotaped on. Whereas the boys/mens hadn't.
😡

elgreco · 07/12/2022 10:12

It's really sad, isn't it. They scraped the woman off. Trans erasure, ME HOLE!

VaddaABeetch · 07/12/2022 11:08

Where is that toilet? I’d have something to say to management

elgreco · 07/12/2022 20:11

The lighthouse cinema. I dont know if they removed it or members of the public.

Abhannmor · 07/12/2022 20:44

@Babasghost TENI and other tra people are always boring on about British Imperialists forcing us thick paddies to become terfs.

They are all into the Celtique Mystique and give themselves exotic pagan Goddess names like Morrigan Dogbreath. They are also fiercely patriotic and republican. Although I don't recall ever seeing many of them on Troops Out marches.

But I suppose most of them were still Stateside back then in fairness.

I can relate to Roscommon btw. In rural North Cork. You have to mount an expedition to get out of here.

Totally off message, but I had to laugh at the imagery @Abhannmor.
I can see you dressed like Scott in Antartica💨🌨🌨 , hiking towards Mitchelstown. 😁😂

Carriemac · 08/12/2022 07:33

Took my mam and dad to the westbury bistro in Dublin Sundays and the toilets were mixed sex . Cubicle smelt of male wee, flirt grubby mam was disgusted. I left them a scathing review . 180 euros for lunch for 4 non drinkers ...

Abhannmor · 08/12/2022 08:55

Well done for the review @Carriemac .

I'd probably have to hike towards Mitchelstown @HilarysMantelpiece given the state of public transport. I often thumbed it home after giving up on Iarnród Eireann at Mallow.

I know I hate this, they come over here and try to tell us all how to live and what to think. Just fuck off!
Imagine the outrage if people went over the the US and tried to infiltrate and get the laws changed, there would be outrage. They're so arrogant. Boils my piss!

Abhannmor · 08/12/2022 09:35

They come in all shapes and sizes @Farmageddon . We have Evangelical nutbags on the one hand and gender woo narcs on the other.

Before you factor in the Nigel Nose ring 'druids'. Every year a bleeding ' did you know Christmas was originally a pagan festival?'

Yes I did , sonny. But we're still going to sing carols and have a nativity play. Is that OK with you ? Sheesh.

3timeslucky · 08/12/2022 10:35

You can be sure there'll be a question on gender identity on the next census. Have your say about how you think that should be framed: www.cso.ie/en/csolatestnews/pressreleases/2022pressreleases/pressstatementcensus2027publicconsultation/
