Just wondering if there are many others out there. Was reading a political pamphlet and it was going on about self ID and how important it is. I just don't agree and think it's so damaging to change the definition of what a woman is. And the definition of a man too, I guess. Sex based rights are under threat in Ireland. Fed up with all the nonsense. Wondering what other Irish mumsnetters think.

@takeawaydinner i was there, Stella o’ malley, Helen joyce, Iseult White & more. It was fabulous.

takeawaydinner · 12/11/2022 23:42

Sounds fantastic. The fact that the organisers had a waiting list in place due to demand for tickets shows that this movement is growing, as more people are starting to realise that this is far more complex than simply "being kind".

I got a last minute cancellation ticket. I was giddy with excitement. Getting to talk with women where I didn’t have to censor my own speech. Hearing the succinct, clear messages from GC women & thd speakers was wonderful

Oh wow, that's brilliant. I'm sorry I missed it. Is it going to be an annual thing do you think?

I think there'll be more events. It was so good to be in a room of like-minded women. The energy was incredible. I'd hate to have wait another year. And there's work to be done so waiting another year really isn't an option.

VaddaABeetch · 13/11/2022 18:04

@Farmageddon the takeaway at the end was sign up to a group & attend meetings IRL.

ForeverFaithless · 13/11/2022 18:04

It was brilliant.

Just being able to listen to speakers and discuss ourselves how legal changes are affecting the lives of women and children.

Like, imagine that? Actually speaking and discussing with women and men, no shouting down, no hate, lots of laughter 😁

I'm already signed up to the Countess and give monthly, but haven't heard anything in a while.
Will have to be more proactive with keeping an eye out for events, thanks.

VaddaABeetch · 13/11/2022 18:45

@Farmageddon you could try a Women’s Place to speak too

HilarysMantelpiece · 13/11/2022 19:05

Wouldn't have known this was happening except for the messages here....but would love to talk to like minded people.
I am becoming slightly braver IRL... I frame conversations around evidence, the Cass review, the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Aus & NZ (www.smh.com.au/national/psychiatrists-college-stirs-up-debate-about-how-to-treat-trans-kids-20210930-p58w3s.html)

VaddaABeetch · 13/11/2022 21:27

@HilarysMantelpiece i felt very alone too, sign up & meet others.

paddyspodcast.ie/episodes-3/
Paddy O'Gorman speaking to people outside Limerick prison.
One former female prisoner describes her experiences of being housed with Transwomen. Despite the fact that they are kept separated, the women were on the receiving end of verbal abuse from the 3 Transwomen.
Another woman described the experience as terrifying.
Thankfully the situation has improved and, at present, there doesn't seem to be any contact at all.

Limerick womens prison only houses 19 inmates right?
So out of 19, 3 are trans

elgreco · 16/11/2022 19:14

Eventually it will be all transwomen. Would hate to be the last women left with 18 males though.

The podcast says 28. So 3 of 28.

The thing that gets me is, if this was about keeping TW safe (not about keeping women safe, coz nobody cares about that really) then it would be easy to segregate them in a mens prison. It's done all the time for vulnerable or high risk prisoners. So it isn't about that at all, it's about validating them...all at the expense of women's actual safety (many of these men are violent or sexual offenders). It's so very clear who is being prioritised here, who matters and who doesn't.

What's really sad is how many people just think there isn't a problem, and we're overreacting. Or just don't care because it doesn't affect them directly.

I guess it's easy to ignore people in prison because they don't have much of a voice in society, or demonise them because they have committed a crime. But the reality is, many/most women are in prison for non violent reasons (theft, drug possession, prostitution) and are already from vulnerable situations. This is just punishing them all over again.

takeawaydinner · 01/12/2022 11:46

It has been recommended that the Transwomen be housed with the women. I can't find the link at the moment but it was considered cruel to keep them segregated as they are at present.
Presumably, at least one of the Transwomen is considered a severe danger but the other two could argue discrimination. After all, Self ID gave them the right to be treated as women, so why the segregation?
Of course, we know the reason, but the law says differently.
I would imagine that the reason they have been segregated so long is that TRA's don't want to draw attention to what is really happening by making an issue of this. Even the most woke politician will recognise that this is not going to win them any votes. The claim that Transwomen are the most vulnerable doesn't really work in this scenario.

The Census has opened a consultation on the questions to be asked in 2027. It is expected that gender identity will be included. It is clearly important that a question remain on biological sex and that the distinctions are clear (ie biological birth sex as sex). It seems the EU requires a M/F answer (which is as it should be of course).

You may have different views about what should (if anything) be asked about gender identity. I think that ship has sailed so my focus will be on the framing of questions about gender identity and particularly highlighting that not everyone has one and that option needs to be there.

Make your views known: www.gov.ie/en/consultation/f1a1f-census-2027-public-consultation-on-questionnaire-content/

Genderwoo · 05/12/2022 23:47

As the census has come up, and as tomorrow, the 6th December 2022, is the centenary of the Irish Free State coming into being - where all women got the vote instead of only women of property, maybe it's the time to share my artwork from this year's census comment sheet.

Hopefully, by the time it's seen again, 100 years will have softened any blowback for my family at my terven shout-outs! 😂

@Genderwoo that’s brill, fabulous work.

takeawaydinner · 06/12/2022 07:44

That is amazing Genderwoo. It reminds me of something the Suffragettes would have put in over a hundred years ago (which is a little sad, that women are still having to fight men for recognition 😞).
I left that part blank. Teenagers too cool to draw anything, and I completely lacked any imagination!

bellinisurge · 06/12/2022 07:46

That's beautiful @Genderwoo

HilarysMantelpiece · 06/12/2022 07:54

@Genderwoo wow! if I were a social media person, I would share that . Inspiring.
