Somebody left a Cash Withdrawal receipt sticking out of the ATM in the local Morrisons. £86,398 in their account...

I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

I often walk away from the atm without taking my receipt. It’s usually when I’m in a hurry and is nothing to do with trying to make people jealous.

What a strange thing for you to say.

In their current account? Someone doesn't sound very money savvy which is odd if they have that amount of money. Must be nice not to have to consider these things.

Who keeps £80k in their current account? Confused

I think its weird that you don't just pick that you don't want a receipt

Flamingosareflummoxed · 15/05/2026 09:45

I have 4p in mine

shhblackbag · 15/05/2026 09:45

Someone who's just had a windfall or inheritance, etc. There are reasons.

Dearg · 15/05/2026 09:48

Did you get a good look at the person, or had they gone? Just wondering for a mugger friend?

Alex4646 · 15/05/2026 09:50

Haha gosh what an exciting amount of money to have in the bank! Maybe buy a lottery ticket and keep everything crossed 😄 next time it could be your receipt!

Nobody, unless they are very rich or have some kind of issue.

HOWEVER, it could just be a case of moving money from one account to another. For instance because a fixed rate has ended and they are switching to a better rate.

These days one can only do this by first transferring the money to a ‘nominated account’. Hence the large balance.

Fuckitydoodah · 15/05/2026 09:56

Oh sorry about that. The brain fog really has me in it's grip right now. I must remember to press no receipt next time 😁

GoodkneeBadKnee · 15/05/2026 09:57

I briefly had nearly that amount in my current account after my endowment paid out. I kept it there for a few days just looking at it🤣🤣

My in-laws.

jumpingjohnny · 15/05/2026 10:01

How much did the 80k withdraw?

I once had to go to the cash point several days running to withdraw enough to pay cash. 80k would take like what, 160 days to withdraw? Definitely easier to do 160 cash point runs than trying to find a reasonably local branch of your bank that actually has opening hours you can access!

Youspurnme · 15/05/2026 10:03

I had that for a couple of hours after a house sale. Ahh that was nice. Now
its overdrawn.

@ThatLilacTiger your comment really made me laugh! Thank you 😆

catipuss · 15/05/2026 10:03

Stupid having that much in a current account, it should be earning interest somewhere.

OriginalSkang · 15/05/2026 10:05

Maybe it was a savings account?

R/woooooosh unclench x

Decacaffeinatednow · 15/05/2026 10:08

@catipuss
It may just have been deposited in the current account waiting to be transferred to a higher interest account. We would have had large amounts in our current account at times.

ThisHeartyQuoter · 15/05/2026 10:08

And here's me scanning left over receipts to bump my more points up (don't knock it, I've had around 9000 points so far). (If people don't have a more card and leave their receipt behind you can scan it and get extra points).

Most people put things that they don’t want in the bin. So don’t ’often walk away from a cash machine without taking the receipt’.

Nourishinghandcream · 15/05/2026 10:09

Any number of reasons why a person may have a significant sum in their current account. Have done it myself on several occasions.

About to buy a new house and it is the deposit.
Sold a house and this is part of the proceeds.
Are about to make a significant purchase (car, Moho, house extension etc) and are preparing the funds to transfer.
Have recently retired and this is the TFLS.
Moving jobs and have taken a severance package and/or share option.
Are consolidating savings before transfering & investing.
Are transferring any of the above but are limited by the £25k/day limit.

Whoever it was took £250 out.
