I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

Some savings accounts have debit cards to let customers withdraw cash.

vitahelp · 15/05/2026 10:55

Sounds like it could have been an elderly person. The fact they were getting cash in the first place. The fact they left the receipt behind. And the fact they had all that money presumably in a current account, I’ve known older folk have over £100k in current accounts from pension payments not spent.

Having said that I’m sure some savings accounts have cards where you can make cash withdrawals.

Very few Scottish chip shops have deep fried mars bars on the menu.

A bag of chips then!

Menohaze · 15/05/2026 10:56

Loads of people have large amounts in current accounts - I recently learnt that in a certain religion (I think Islam) it is frowned upon to earn interest

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 15/05/2026 10:56

I remember hearing a story about Mark Zuckerberg, while he was on holiday in Italy.
He was using an ATM, but didn’t withdraw any cash, but the person in the queue did withdraw cash.
Frank Skinner reckons Mark just wanted to see his bank balance - just for funsies!

Coastelle · 15/05/2026 10:56

When I withdraw cash and get a receipt it never has my balance on it, just the sum withdrawn. I only get my balance when I ask for a balance request to be printed.

Only the elderly use cash?

I’m 54 (elderly to my kids I will admit) and use cash all the time.

His back balance is probably much more normal than we think!

Some folk on here are so sour faced, I swear when they're having sex they close their eyes because they can't bear to see anyone else enjoying themselves.

This sums up MN! I should be the tagline 🤣

I often walk away from the atm without taking my receipt. It’s usually when I’m in a hurry and is nothing to do with trying to make people jealous.

What a strange thing for you to say.

Your reaction to the OP is stranger! Obviously a lighthearted post.

louderthan · 15/05/2026 11:01

My mum had about £50k in her current account for quite a long time, til she had a financial review and the financial adviser told her off!

keepswimming38 · 15/05/2026 11:01

I once had 120k in mine but the next day it was transferred to the mortgage. Some people just move money but it’s not just spare so to speak.

My mum is 77 and she mostly uses contactless. Anyone can leave a receipt in an ATM. People do it all the time

Someone who's just had a windfall or inheritance, etc. There are reasons.

I once had a lot of money in my account due to an inheritance and i left the receipt in every time i took cash out.

The money didn't last very long so it was a fun game for a short time 😂

SavedByTheBells · 15/05/2026 11:06

catipuss · 15/05/2026 10:03

Stupid having that much in a current account, it should be earning interest somewhere.

So if you were transferring money from one place to another how would you do it?

You can't infer anything from the fact that someone had that amount there for a moment in time

People get inheritances, drawdorm pensions, sell things etc that could explain it

I certainly wouldn't judge someone who'd had an inheritance, presumably they rather the person was still alive

RollOnSunshine · 15/05/2026 11:09

AgnesX · 15/05/2026 09:42

In their current account? Someone doesn't sound very money savvy which is odd if they have that amount of money. Must be nice not to have to consider these things.

It might be have been an account that pays interest.

MNLurker1345 · 15/05/2026 11:10

I was once behind an elderly lady at a co-op ATM and the screen emblazoned out that she had over £40,000 in her account. She was being slow, I think because of her age.

I caught up with her in the shop after doing my transaction and had word with her. She was very grateful and said she would try to be more aware.

The thought of the wrong person being behind her.

zingally · 15/05/2026 11:11

Could be any number of reasons why someone has that much in their current account.

I had £120,000 in mine for a couple of weeks when preparing to make a house purchase.

coulditbeme2323 · 15/05/2026 11:12

And it 80k not 800k.

Doesn't even need to be a house deposit, could literally be a new kitchen and bathroom.

Mybingoballs · 15/05/2026 11:12

LOL @LoyalMember can I have my receipt back please 😂😂😂😂

mjf981 · 15/05/2026 11:13

My Dad is a bit of a wheeler and dealer and often does cash jobs in his semi retirement. I was visiting him and my mum a few years back and opened a small lower drawer in a corner of their kitchen...and came across (the equivalent) of over 12,000 pounds in cash. When I asked him about it he said - 'yeah thats my cash drawer!'

I went out and bought him a safe the next day, but I don't think he even uses it. They don't even lock the house half the time when they go out!!
