Somebody left a Cash Withdrawal receipt sticking out of the ATM in the local Morrisons. £86,398 in their account...

I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

On the way to the pub once when cash was still king I found similar sticking out of the cash point. As a poor youngster I took it and at the pub I casually put it on the pub table saying “My purse is full of receipts and rubbish”. Obviously everyone couldn’t resist a glance. I let them think I’d got £50k in the bank for a few minutes before I had to admit it wasn’t mine

OriginalPedant · 15/05/2026 11:15

Missing point, but I can’t remember the last time I used an ATM, or took my bank card out with me.

I have too much money in my current account. Im not rich, I just really need a financial advisor.

Who keeps £80k in their current account? Confused

I know someone who has a lot more than that, she is very elderly and no amount of trying by her family will persuade her to invest any of it.

She seems to think that she doesn't have much money saved in case she needs care and she does have other assets elsewhere.

I was once behind an elderly lady at a co-op ATM and the screen emblazoned out that she had over £40,000 in her account. She was being slow, I think because of her age.

I caught up with her in the shop after doing my transaction and had word with her. She was very grateful and said she would try to be more aware.

The thought of the wrong person being behind her.

Which is pretty normal with some ATMs if you they ask do you want to see your balance and you say yes.

What should I do if I’ve lots of money in my current account? Where should I put it?

ThisHeartyQuoter · 15/05/2026 11:17

Still better than all of ours, i’ll wager!

Here's me thinking I was rich because my UC went into the bank this morning.

There are online apps like Zopa and plum (and many others) that give you interest. There are also Isas you could open.

You could use something like Flagstone or Raisin which is a platform for saving in fixed term or easy access accounts. If you have lots of cash it allows you to benefit from the FCA protection by using different financial institutions.

And it 80k not 800k.

Doesn't even need to be a house deposit, could literally be a new kitchen and bathroom.

Blimey! My whole house cost 80k.

Always loved the lovely Mani’s story after the Stone Roses reunion. Said he was pretty skint at that time, gone out to buy milk, checked the ATM, and discovered nearly £2 million had unexpectedly landed in his account from the reunion deal.

I can only dream of that, sigh.

I once had that money in my account. It wasn't mine, and it was just on hold for a specific reason.

Rbof · 15/05/2026 11:38

Imagine not having the time to wait the nanosecond it takes for a receipt to be printed, but still have enough time to be a nark on mumsnet.

Very few Scottish chip shops have deep fried mars bars on the menu.

Mine cost 7.5k in 2017. Ex council. Without discount it would have been 26k. My brother bought a two bedroomed flat two years ago for 100k.

Recently helped my 89 year old mum to do her tax return, as although fully compos mentis, she simply isn't interested in her money. I knew she was financially comfortable but had no idea she had 85k in one current account and 25k in another, as well as about 600k in various savings accounts.

When I expressed surprise at how much was in her non-interest bearing current accounts she said it was there in case she needed it quickly if there was a problem with the house or some other emergency.( Although house is old it's well-maintained). She would not have it when I suggested keeping only about 10 or 15k in current accounts!

Feis123 · 15/05/2026 11:40

Well, obviously not £80K, but I as a sole trader sometimes have up to £6K in my current account, and every time I come to the bank (I don't have internet banking) a helpful cashier suggests I tuck it away in a higher interest account, to which I invariably reply - 'a sod on on sod all is still sod all', and then 'now, can I please make some transfers to my colleagues and sub-contractors' and the cashier goes 'ahhh, I see, after £1200 remain in the account after all payments I have to make'.

So what I am trying to say - maybe that person is a sole trader, only x10 more successful than I am?

Or I am saying that we don't know what these £80K are really the result of of. A trustee of an estate to distribute equally between 5 legitimate and 3 illegitimate children? The list goes on! We never know.

And it is more useful to count one's blessings - compare your bank balance to bank balances of women in Saudi. Oh, shit.... they don't have bank balances...
