Somebody left a Cash Withdrawal receipt sticking out of the ATM in the local Morrisons. £86,398 in their account...

I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

Maybe they’re moving house and temporarily moved the deposit in there

people are so judgy

Mykneesareshot · 17/05/2026 18:24

Well I for one am very jealous. Living month to month on minimum wage at 54 sucks.

Surprise, surprise, but people can have whatever they like in their bank account. That could be to put towards a property they want to buy, what business is it of yours. Many people walk away from an atm not taking their receipt. You are very odd, to even post this....

I'm now convinced this site's nothing more than a giant Joy Vacuum. Half the people on here are either badly constipated or dangerously in need of a good seeing to...😆😂

exactly, I don't get cash out very often, and if I do on the odd occasion, I don't ask for a receipt. Not that I have 80k in my bank account (I wish) but leaving bank details behind is a very risky business.

I hear you and I'm 58.

As someone who sadly lives in OD..what a lovely amount to have 😍

Tryagain26 · 17/05/2026 19:03

I'm sure they didn't leave it to make you jealous. Why would anyone do that? It was probably an oversight.
The money could have just been transferred into their bank temporarily for a house deposit. I doubt they keep that sort of money in their current account normally
But in any case it's no one else's business.

Sueandthegoldfish · 17/05/2026 19:25

My late father had similar sums in his current accounts. In the end they were writing to him asking if he’d like to do something else with his money…

Sorry, just a bit more about the facility. Within seconds of withdrawing from an ATM or doing an online transaction I receive a message on my phone as well as an email saying there’s been a transaction on the account. So even if I didn’t then receive a daily update just after midnight I’d still know to within a few seconds what my balance was.

My other non main account alerts me instantly when a transaction has been made which I really like. My main one only gives me a balance update once a week 🙄

FloorLamp · 17/05/2026 20:18

LoyalMember · 17/05/2026 14:10

I don't get that with our TSB account. I do get a text every Friday at about 10am to tell me our balance. It's not always that accurate, though. I've seen it up to nearly £200 higher than what we actually have. I'd rate it at 5 or 6 out of 10 in all honesty because it's just not all that precise.

Edited

Yes I get that alert too once a week but my other bank of Scotland account sends me a notification as soon as a transaction is made which I really like. Don't know why TSB doesn't have this feature as it's really useful and would help massively with fraud etc. I'll be switching from them as soon as I redo my mortgage.

That's what I was thinking!

I hate to admit to this but we do.

Husband inherited some money. We gave our children each 10%, paid a few bills and were still left with 250K. He refuses to deal with it. Doesn't want to pay the taxes on the interest it would earn. I've decided when a nice little bungalow comes up nearby, it's being bought. It's in joint chequing.

I think after years of living payday to payday it gives him a feeling of control and that he can buy what he wants, when he wants.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 17/05/2026 21:16

That person was lucky to actually get a receipt never mind leaving it behind.

My local ATM rarely gives receipts even if it asks you if you would like one.

ILombardiallaPrimaCrociata · 15/05/2026 09:53

Nobody, unless they are very rich or have some kind of issue.

HOWEVER, it could just be a case of moving money from one account to another. For instance because a fixed rate has ended and they are switching to a better rate.

These days one can only do this by first transferring the money to a ‘nominated account’. Hence the large balance.

This.
Frequent with property dealings, if nothing else.

PearsAndAlsoApples · 18/05/2026 07:31

When my parents very kindly gave me £5k to purchase my first car, I delayed car-hunting for a few weeks because I loved looking at the balance anytime I passed an ATM.

In their current account? Someone doesn't sound very money savvy which is odd if they have that amount of money. Must be nice not to have to consider these things.

There can be lots of reason someone might temporarily have that sort of money in there current account. I recently had a large amount in mine to pay a deposit, you can’t transfer money from savings accounts etc to an external account.

Someone with plenty of money.

Any number of reasons why a person may have a significant sum in their current account. Have done it myself on several occasions.

About to buy a new house and it is the deposit.
Sold a house and this is part of the proceeds.
Are about to make a significant purchase (car, Moho, house extension etc) and are preparing the funds to transfer.
Have recently retired and this is the TFLS.
Moving jobs and have taken a severance package and/or share option.
Are consolidating savings before transfering & investing.
Are transferring any of the above but are limited by the £25k/day limit.

Even more reasons out there, some of which don’t even necessarily mean that the money really belongs to the account holder.

A self employed person may owe a huge amount of that in overheads. It could all be to pay a huge tax bill. We have no idea.

One thing I learnt from self employment is that people who are not self employed can’t get their heads round the concept of earning money which is not really, in large part, yours! It’s the turnover of a business, not personal spends.

I digress slightly….

In a nutshell, OP has no reason to be jealous.

They shouldn’t keep it in their current account. Better in ISAs or a savings account. I never, after bill paying day, leave more than £50 in my current account.

Someone who's just had a windfall or inheritance, etc. There are reasons.

Yes there are, for example when I moved house there was an awful lot of money in my current account for a very short period of time, which had no reflection on my financial status whatsoever (although it even prompted my bank to give me a "high net worth" account which I totally didn't deserve!)

Why do people always have to make up a reason for it as if it’s an anomaly that needs to be explained? Lots of people have lots of money. Having 80k isn’t unusual. Having it all in your current account isn’t best practice but also isn’t unusual.

There are no bank details on the receipts.
