Somebody left a Cash Withdrawal receipt sticking out of the ATM in the local Morrisons. £86,398 in their account...

I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

OP posts:
managingexpectations · 15/05/2026 11:45

I had £98,528 in my account for 24 hours a couple of years ago. Sadly it was for a house deposit and after it was transferred out I was left with £28 😂
I still have the atm receipt just to prove I had money at one point in my life!!

Who keeps £80k in their current account? Confused

Someone who needs it there for an upcoming deposit?

Well who knows what they might be doing with their money at a particular time. I’m sure they weren’t expecting it to be discussed on the internet 😉😂

Who keeps £80k in their current account?

Years ago, I used to work where proof of address was required and once had a copy of a bank statement submitted by obviously someone massively wealthy, they had over a million in the account.

How the other half live 😮

Less intrusive than some threads you see on these boards tbh

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 15/05/2026 11:54

Strange for someone so solvent to be so financially illiterate- why on earth would you leave £80k sat in a current acc? Surely that kind of money would be better of in ISAs, investments, or even premium bonds?

BigGapMum · 15/05/2026 11:54

I recently had a large balance on the current account as had just retired and my pension lump sum was paid into my current account. It didn't stay there long, though.

I love it when someone does a light hearted post and then does a rage post minutes later, it's my favourite.

Franpie · 15/05/2026 11:56

I’ve had that amount of money in my account and more at times but it’s always been earmarked for something so it could just be that.

The last time was last year when I took out a loan for house renovations. The money didn’t stay in my account for long!

AInightingale · 15/05/2026 11:57

POA account? My mother had to sell her house to fund care and she has more than double that in hers. Yes, we do have to get round to investing some of it more wisely, but at the minute it's in the current account.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 15/05/2026 11:58

Our £100,000 was in our current account for over a year as our house purchase took an unbelievably long time, mainly due to probate issues within the chain. Had we known it would take so long, we could have invested the money. Unfortunately, our estimated completion date was always just around the corner. 🙄

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/05/2026 12:00

I reckon they’re in the process of buying & selling some houses, which is why they are distracted.

SurreySenMum26 · 15/05/2026 12:01

Someone left a £400 recipt for Pimms at Tesco self scan and another for a £85 bottle of wiskey and a pack of crisps.

I was both jelous and impressed. As I had a meal deal and reduced yellow sticker veg. I was just mesmerised by imagining their life style.

ThisHeartyQuoter · 15/05/2026 12:03

It could be a footballer getting paid his weeks salary. Someone could have just won the lottery.

Myblueclematis · 15/05/2026 12:03

I had around £300K in my account for a week or so after my dad died. It was due to be split but all the time I had it in my account I really worried about how much was in there.

It was a huge relief to get it distributed and have something less worrying left in the account.

ThisHeartyQuoter · 15/05/2026 12:04

The team I supports players don't get paid anywhere near that btw but the bigger clubs will and more.

You know if you use a straw it makes it easier to suck every last ounce of humour out of things.

I didn’t read it as lighthearted either

Waitingforthesunnydays · 15/05/2026 12:08

And they’re obviously buying or selling a house or something. The money will be in there temporarily. Even super rich people don’t go round with 86 grand in their current account

BillieWiper · 15/05/2026 12:09

They should put most of it in savings. It's kinda unwise to walk round with that much in your current account. Well the money would be better off earning interest anyway.

They may have just sold a property and it'll all have to come out again tomorrow?

I can't say I've ever looked at someone else cash machine receipt. I never get one either. But safe to say I don't think I'll ever have that much money! Unless something awful happened.

What year??

Ages ago but it has just been valued at £135,000.

I’ve actually saved this response to use with a very pessimistic friend of mine :-)

Our FA recommended we keep a cash fund of £80-100k in an easily accessible account to avoid dipping into investments and other long term savings options for holidays and other bigger expenses.
We finally got round to moving it to a bog standard savings account but we had it in a current account for ages just because it was an already opened joint account we both had a card for.
