Somebody left a Cash Withdrawal receipt sticking out of the ATM in the local Morrisons. £86,398 in their account...

I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

Who keeps £80k in their current account? Confused

My exMIL. We discovered that she was being paid 3 pensions (hers and the two exH) and it was so much, it overwhelmed her and she just left it. Her monthly income is £14,000. Apparently Lloyds contacted her when it went over £80,000 and she just got annoyed at them, she told us and that’s when we looked into it.
As far as I know, she hasn’t done anything about it.

ThisHeartyQuoter · 15/05/2026 10:11

Any spare penny I have goes in Zopa as I get absolutely no interest on my current account

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/05/2026 10:11

£80,000 pah!
Apparently this is a wage slip of the footballer C. Tevez in 2010
(He did pay at lot of tax though...)

Maybe they’re about to transfer it for a house deposit.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 15/05/2026 10:16

O don’t think I get a receipt normally so if one did come there’s a good chance I might leave it not realising it’s there.

80k in your bank long term is maybe not that normal but there’s lot of reasons you might have it at some point - recent house sale, recent inheritance or bonus, saving up for a deposit or significant purchase.

Splooterer · 15/05/2026 10:19

Jellybelly80 · 15/05/2026 09:39

I often walk away from the atm without taking my receipt. It’s usually when I’m in a hurry and is nothing to do with trying to make people jealous.

What a strange thing for you to say.

You okay with littering then?

If I was very rich, I’d have that kind of money in my current account, because I’d constantly be spending money!

Tbh on this area you never know. Let’s say resentment runs high in this area of the world. 😂

In their current account? Someone doesn't sound very money savvy which is odd if they have that amount of money. Must be nice not to have to consider these things.

I'm self employed, I have £74K in there (current account) today, but HMRC to pay and a £32K bill for materials I have just ordered - it can ebb and flow, if you are a sole trader your current account can be very up one week and very down another, its cashflow, not spending money.

Maybe they are waiting to transfer a house deposit, or have just won the premium bonds and haven’t worked out what to do with it yet.

Anyone who keeps £80k in their current account permanently, yep not very money-savvy (looking at you DH, who keeps his entire life savings in his current account despite my best efforts). But just having the money there at one particular point in time doesn’t mean anything.

Whoever it was took £250 out.

This is weirder to me! Cannot even remember the last time I needed that much cash for anything! Maybe despite the balance they do the cash envelope budgeting method?

PeachySmile2 · 15/05/2026 10:25

My admin job requires me to review bank statements…. Sometimes it makes me want to cry 😂 Where did I go wrong….!

Some folk on here are so sour faced, I swear when they're having sex they close their eyes because they can't bear to see anyone else enjoying themselves.

This is a very good point, it could be a business account.

I pay my cleaner on a monthly basis and she requires cash so take a similar amount out once a month.

To pay someone? Tradesman. Going on holiday and exchanging money. There could be several reasons for a cash withdrawal of that kind

It was a perfectly reasonable thing for @Jellybelly80 to say. I view "lighten up" as being up there with "it was only a joooooke!" and "haven’t you got a sense of humour?" - the sort of thing playground bullies say.

Now you can tell me to "lighten up" or "unclench" too…

Grizelina · 15/05/2026 10:31

Could be they're waiting for funds to move as a property deposit and they were checking to see if the funds had gone out! I don't pick up other peoples receipts so have no idea what others have in their bank accounts!

Pleasealexa · 15/05/2026 10:32

Older people tend to keep lots of cash in current accounts..a number of reasons including it can build up if they are not spending according to their income or they have been given a lump sum and feel overwhelmed with having to move lock it up for a few years.

Elderly neighbour is in this position but she doesn't want to have to jump through hoops to access her money should she need it...to be fair at her age, late 80s she forecasts carer costs which deplete it fairly quickly.

We rarely use the ATM as we don't spend much actual cash and we keep a significant sum in the safe for when some may be required.
That said, when we do need a top-up, we withdraw £250.

Someone who's operating the account on behalf of an elderly person in care where the monthly fees are horrendous.

Thowaway · 15/05/2026 10:35

We had six figures in ours once - we sold our flat and were living with my parents for a few weeks before our house sale went though.

I think I checked our balance to marvel at it at least once an hour!

Twelve days til payday this month… I’m not looking at it 🙈

Fantailed · 15/05/2026 10:36

shhblackbag · 15/05/2026 09:45

Someone who's just had a windfall or inheritance, etc. There are reasons.

Or it’s a house deposit that’s only in that account for a few days on weeks before it’s paid out. I think I had some stonkinh amount of cash briefly in mine for that reason. I should have framed the statement!

user1492757084 · 15/05/2026 10:40

It could be a business, or a school.

Jk987 · 15/05/2026 10:42

It might have been a celeb! 😎
