What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

Ocado toilet rolls £4.50 for 9 or 2 packs for £7.
Farmfoods back bacon 16 rasher packs 3 packs for £7
Farmfoods 1kg bag granulated sugar £1
Farmfoods 6 400g tins of Napolina tomatoes £1.99
Farmfoods stonebaked pizzas £1.50

Farmfoods often have the 80 or 100 wash boxes of soap powder brands like Bold, Daz or Surf on for under £10 & the professional size Lenor or Comfort for £8.

Before I was ill I used to do as much of my shopping at Farmfoods as I could, saved me loads of money.

Is it still made with pine nuts? The Sacla and Tesco ones are made with cashews now.

Just checked and it’s a combination of pine nuts and cashew.

I saw a thread recently that said they don't have Waitrose in the North. Must have been hallucinating when I shopped in the Hexham one 😉

Waitrose essentials pesto has been price dropped to £1.35 and is made with pine nuts

Aldi's Lemon dishwasher tablets.
Sainsburys own Non bio gel.
Lidl's tinned tomatoes.

As for branded tea and coffee. I buy Ringtons. Most won't have heard of them. The vans come to your door. It's like going back in time. I can bear other brands of tea but only their instant coffee. I don't know how they make it but it's lovely. They do online but I like getting them from the Ringtons man.

I've just looked online and didn't know this about instant coffee! I'll try it next time.

Edited

Just come across this thread.

Billy has been today with our Northumbrian Gold loose leaf - and Brazil nut biscuits.

Can also recommend Waitrose toilet roll, we started buying it when we lived abroad and it was cheaper than Andrex.

Ponteland and Jesmond definitely have Waitrose.

Ulysees · 03/05/2024 22:47

@Cyclingmummy1 our Ringtons man is Peter 😊
I've run out of ginger biscuits but he comes Mondays. Doubt he'd come bank hol and I'm away anyway.

I know. And it was someone up north who said it? 🤣

Someone in my neighbourhood bought 24 tins of Aldi baked beans during lockdown. They went from house to house-each family trying one tin, realising they were vile and passing the rest on. It was like a bizarre reverse progressive dinner......

Depends what they meant by 'north'. DH is from Yorkshire and I can't think I've ever seen a Waitrose near my MIL.

You've reminded me that there's a box of chocolate brazils in the pantry.

Ulysees · 04/05/2024 09:37

@Cyclingmummy1 there's one in York.

Can't believe those brazils survived. They're gorgeous.

My online shop used to come from the Hexham branch (a 60 mile round trip!) It now comes from Poneland. My chap last night said he had to go up to Craster to deliver to a holiday cottage. Of course they hadn't arrived yet. Happens a lot apparently; people ordering food for Friday night arrival with no guarantee you'll get there by then.

Agree there's branches of Waitrose in Yorkshire too. Perhaps not so prolific as down south.

I'm pissed off that I still can't get Ocado here in NE England.

buffyslayer · 04/05/2024 10:06

There's a Waitrose in Preston too

LuckysDadsHat · 04/05/2024 10:10

Sainsburys tomato ketchup. Tastes really good and a massive bottle is about £1.50 compared to £3 odd for heinz.

CurlewKate · 04/05/2024 10:17

Waitroses in Otley and in Harrogate. Of course there's one in Harrogate!!

Cyclingmummy1 · 04/05/2024 11:10

@RainbowZebraWarrior can't you get Ocado? Must admit I've never tried, but just assumed you could. Abel&Cole will delivery 3 streets from me but not to me because we're in a different postcode.

@CurlewKate Harrogate - of course 😆

@Ulysees they were hidden behind something else. DH didn't tell me he'd bought 3 boxes so I assumed we'd eaten them all.

I assure you there are many branches of Waitrose even here in the wilds of Yorkshire.

Sheffield, Leeds, Otley, Harrogate and York, off the top of my head.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/05/2024 12:48

@Cyclingmummy1 no, I keep putting my postcode in to check on Ocado every six months or so. For the past 10 years it's been telling me "we don't deliver to you yet, but we are on our way" To be honest, I've also never seen an Ocado van in my region.

Cyclingmummy1 · 04/05/2024 13:15

@RainbowZebraWarrior now you mention it, I've never seen one. But I won't if they don't deliver here. The things you don't know that you don't know!

I think that supermarket own brand beans are nicer than Heinz. Heinz used to be nice with a nice thick red sauce. Now the sauce is salmon pink with lots of mushy bits of crushed beans and the actual beans sit at the bottom of the tin under that nasty liquid.

HeChokedOnAChorizo · 05/05/2024 18:10

DD loves Heinz ketchup, I have tried all the supermarkets own brand and she hates them all. I bought Daddy’s the other day and she likes it 🎉 it’s half the price of Heinz.
