What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

I always buy own brand things apart from baked beans.

Peonies12 · 05/05/2024 18:26

Anything! I never buy brands, baffles me anyone does. It’s all the same product inside, just fancy packaging

pastapestoparmesan · 05/05/2024 18:47

Microwave rice. Branded - over a pound, Tesco own brand 65p, Tesco cheap own brand - 45p. The 45p one tastes like… rice. Also I probably have a very unsophisticated palate, but the cheapest mozzarella tastes exactly the same to me as the posh kind ( if it’s cooked).

Ulysees · 05/05/2024 21:06

@pastapestoparmesan yes I never buy expensive microwave rice. Usually Aldi.

M&S ketchup and baked beans

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/05/2024 22:24

There's also a Yorkshire Waitrose in Willerby, just outside Hull.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 07/05/2024 00:47

Tesco/Asda version of special K red berry. Lidl version is awful though.

I saw a thread recently that said they don't have Waitrose in the North. Must have been hallucinating when I shopped in the Hexham one 😉

I've learned to ignore the uninformed ramblings of southerners who think that X, Y or Z doesn't exist in 'the north', because its not good for one's blood pressure and there's a certain kind of arrogant stupidity that's hard to fix.

Wait until they find out about Booths......

Back to the point of the thread, we got a surprisingly cheap jar of peanut butter in M&S the other day. DP is a 'has to be Sunpat, not own brand or any of those worthy sugar free versions' man (he does have his good points, honestly) but he declared that one perfectly fine, so in the words of Eat Well for Less, that's a swap we will keep (I think it was £1.70 for a jar that would be £3 if Sunpat).

Cyclingmummy1 · 07/05/2024 19:09

@Bjorkdidit agree on both counts.

Aldi peanut butter is great.

Ulysees · 07/05/2024 20:57

@Bjorkdidit it was a northerner who said it.

I'm too far north for Waitrose but I'm in NE Scotland. I'd have to go 50 miles south to reach one. Grin

prettybird · 07/05/2024 22:08

There are 3 Waitroses within 8 miles of where I live - in Glasgow Grin

Lacura Hot Cloth Cleanser is just as good as the Liz Earle version.

Co-op cornflakes are just as good as Kelloggs.

Pumpkin40 · 31/05/2024 22:02

We use Aldi for caster sugar and other baking items as I find them a lot cheaper. Also shop at Aldi for double strength as Tesco started doing quadruple strength squash but my 18 year old was using the same amount.

Eastie77Returns · 05/06/2024 22:31

Lidl nappies. They were the best brand we found. Soft, reliably kept leaks at bay and a steal at about £2.49 for 40. We went on holiday once and forgot to bring them. I ended up having to buy a pack of Pampers - I almost wept when I saw the price!

Mrsredlipstick · 15/07/2024 14:39

Aldi shortbread fingers. Better than fortnum and mason. (son bought the posh for Christmas, we went back to the former)

Cyclingmummy1 · 15/07/2024 17:18

PSA: Aldi have changed their peanut butter. The new product is not the same. Go to Marks instead.

I'm amazed this is still going. Glad it is though. __

Aldi specially selected crisps
Far too nice. I may or may not have eaten 3 bags today and 2 as crisp sarnies 🙈

Love cashew butter, not always easy to find as more almond in Lidl

Where do you get that? The one we're using takes a lot of flushing.

Farmfoods sell Nicky Elite, I buy Ocado toilet rolls, £3.75 for 9 or £6.50 for 2 packs.

Ulysees · 07/11/2024 22:17

Thanks @Nat6999

Lidl brownies from their help-yourself bakery stand - probably the best I've had in a long time.
