What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

@prettybird , mine are weird because they aren't mad about Dreamies, but one was stealing lick-e-lik tubes from the cupboard. They'll do anything for lick-e-lix.
Finding well-chewed lick-e-lik tubes under furniture isn't pleasant, but you've got to admire his methods.

Any recommendations for own brand lick-e-lix anyone?

Fortunately our two moggies (actually beautiful Siamese Wink) like the Lidl Coshida dry stuff. Grin

However, there is no substitute for Dreamies. What is in them that makes them so attractive to all cats? ConfusedShock

So do mine. All about the lidl posh one.

there’s a new lidl cat treat that’s freeze dried meats (it’s in a black bag)
Mine will hunt it down wherever they may be and destroy everything until they have them.

in conclusion, they seem popular

KirstenBlest · 09/03/2024 12:11

I bought the Coshida premium pouches and DCat wouldn't even go near the bowl. I'd bought several boxes and took the unopened ones back. Lidl refunded me without any hassle, which I thought was good.

If the cats are good, I might get the freeze-dried cat treats but suspect I might be making a rod for my own back if I do.

My cats are just moggies. On the plus side, they aren't very vocal.

They probably put catnip in 😉

@Ulysees - I've checked the ingredients, because that's what I thought too, but I can't see anything obvious Confused

Ulysees · 09/03/2024 22:17

They'd have to say. We need someone from the dreamies factory 😉

Lidl washing up liquid has the old nostalgic fairy liquid smell and it's not bad either.

Morrisons bathroom spray smells great and cleans pretty well - highly recommend that.

Lidl/Aldi copies of natural source shower gel and radox are pretty good.

Another vote for Lidl mayo.

Chocolate digestives and chocolate chip cookies from Lidl are also better than mcvities and Maryland.

Chettiar · 11/03/2024 13:38

Morrisons Fruit and Fibre. Less salt and sugar than Kelloggs and 750g is 1.49 which is great! Switched last month. Think it must have been cheaper before.

Ulysees · 12/03/2024 23:59

Cheers everyone who's posted.

I'll have to try that shower gel @Frosty1000 . Is it much cheaper than the average one?

Most things, to be honest! The only items I buy branded are Anchor salted butter and Fairy dish soap!

Waitrose pesto is £1.90 and made with a handful of recognisable ingredients, and the only oil is olive oil. Sacla is £3.50 for the same size and full of shite.

Edited

Some of Waitrose own brands are fantastic and really reasonably priced.

Startyabastard · 14/04/2024 10:12

Waitrose baked beans are 4 for £1.90 and are very good, not too sugary like M&S.

BeaLola · 14/04/2024 10:14

Aldi coffee over Kenco
Aldi roll on deodorant over M&S one
Aldi wet wipes
M&S bread
Aldi everyday cashews, marmite equivalent, lots of the biscuits and the "bounty" bars, ice cream
M&S ready to eat advocacy's

KirstenBlest · 14/04/2024 18:17

Lidl ice cream is much better than Aldi ice cream.

Ulysees · 14/04/2024 20:59

I wish there was a Waitrose near me.

Tesco's Butterpak is an excellent replacement for Lurpak and roughly half the price.

HeChokedOnAChorizo · 01/05/2024 19:20

I couldn’t get on with Aldi washing up liquid, I thought it was crap and false economy so I have gone back to Fairy.

i do shop in Aldi but I don’t buy their hygiene products, shower gel etc. I have skin like a rhino, I am not allergic to anything, I have used many brands over the years, but the Lacura face cream made my face itch.

I like Asda own brand toilet roll as I found it nice and thick. I also buy branded toiletries but use B&M or savers where they are much cheaper.

KirstenBlest · 01/05/2024 19:25

Aldi has different types of washing-up liquid. I've not tried any but the Lidl stuff is fine.

CurlewKate · 02/05/2024 10:01

Most Aldi/Lidl own brands are just as good if not better with some spectacular and puzzling exceptions. I think some of the exceptions, like cornflakes and baked beans are because they are pretty exclusively British tastes- so European manufacturers don't get them "right". But why the toast bread isnMt good when most of the other bakery stuff is excellent is a puzzle.

Fizbosshoes · 01/03/2024 09:20

DS insists Aldi baked beans are the best. I don't eat them so I can't verify.

I came on to say this! Mind you I have never liked Heinz!

Ulysees · 03/05/2024 00:16

I'll eat any beans tbh. If they need a bit of oomph I mix in a bit of brown sauce.

I buy the own brand baked beans. £1.40 vs 28p?

destinationzoo · 03/05/2024 00:53

TinaCx · 01/03/2024 09:11

Aldi nappies. They're better and so much more affordable than the top brand.

This is just not true unfortunately

Is it still made with pine nuts? The Sacla and Tesco ones are made with cashews now.

FictionalCharacter · 03/05/2024 03:47

Aldi's Almat washing powder, both white and colour varieties. Annoyingly not in stock at the moment.
