What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

Danpak from Lidl. Lidl fresh fruit juices. Lidl deep pan pizza, it’s £1.19 and we love it.

Waitrose tomato ketchup - 95p and as good as Heinz!

Their brown sauce and salad cream is also my go to now.

Nicky Elite toilet paper - cheaper and better than the rest.

Absolutely agree. 3 ply and 32 rolls for less than a tenner.

Anyone have a recommendation for olive oil?

Willmafrockfit · 03/03/2024 08:33

@wizzler i was using Lidl olive oil

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 03/03/2024 08:36

M&S baked beans, ketchup and brown sauce. I stock up on them, I'd never buy Heinz or HP again.

Tesco sage and onion stuffing. I bought it because I refused to pay £2 for Paxo, and it was exactly the same taste and texture for something like 50p.

The Aldi Specially Selected extra virgin one recently won a Good Housekeeping award for best budget olive oil. I buy their rapeseed oil as I switched over to from olive to rapeseed for most things a few years ago, and it's excellent. I think the olive oil is £4 for 500ml. The rapeseed oil was £1.49 for years which was incredible. Its now £2.49.

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 03/03/2024 08:48

Lidl mayonnaise, salad cream and tomato ketchup.

YourWinter · 03/03/2024 08:54

Aldi Specially Selected olive oil is nice, I also like the organic Terra Delyssa EVOO from Morrison’s. And Morrison’s scalloped sea salt and black pepper crackers rather than Jacob’s crackers.

Aldi organic cider vinegar, with the nuts, seeds and preserves, not where the other oils and vinegars are.

On the back of this thread I bought some primark foundation. Wasn’t 100% which one the pp meant, but went matte foundation.
oh my god it’s fantastic.
thank you!

mydogisthebest · 04/03/2024 18:01

M&S crunchy peanut butter is nicer than any of the others we have tried

I didn't notice anyone mention that. I need some so I'll look.

There were a few but I couldn’t decide between one with rose oil or the matte one. But I’m lazy and don’t use powder so matte it was!!

thank you for starting this thread, I would have never known!

I couldn't disagree more , method multi purpose is the only cleaner i buy and apart from lasting ages i have never found a cleaner that compares.
I have never used other method products so can't comment on them.

I think Pink Stuff is one of the best brands for cleaning. Much cheaper than method. As you say, it's the smell with Method I find attractive.

Love your name 😁

You can add a couple of drops of essential oil to cleaning products. I also put a drop on a bit of loo roll or kitchen roll and vacuum it. Vacuum stays smelling good for a while (until empty) I use essential oils for allsorts. They need diluting with carrier oil for skin contact apart from a couple. Lavender and tea tree are ok. Possibly others?

@VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji I don't use foundation now but started thinking I might when I go out. I'm mid 50s and have good skin but think a bit of foundation might be good when I go out. Any I have needs chucking so I'll try Primark.

Lidl's ketchup....my ones will take anything, but are so fussy about their ketchup. I bought lidl's ketchup and they love it!! Total shock, but it's 69p whereas heinz ketchup is 3.00!!! Great save.🤗🤗🤗

BigFishontheTelly · 06/03/2024 18:59

Bit niche but Home Bargains sell bags of chestnuts for £1.29. They're £2.50 in Tesco for the same brand and amount.

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 08/03/2024 18:02

Bjorkdidit · 01/03/2024 10:27

@Mrsjayy

We're the same with M&S. They're among the cheapest, or the same price as anywhere else for milk, white sliced bread, big blocks of cheddar cheese, mixed size free range eggs, cans of soup, beans, tomatoes and a lot of 'basic' veg, eg potatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli. Plus they have good reductions and good value meal deal offers and it always feels like a bit of a treat to shop there.

Yep our little M&S food hall is cheaper for lots of things than our big Tesco.

Ulysees · 08/03/2024 23:47

I'm going to pop to our m&s on Monday. It's always busy. Has a nice cafe too

I can’t believe the number of people who are saying Weetabix substitutes are ok. They are one of the few brands we can all spot a sub for in a heartbeat. Weetabix is one of a handful of brands we don’t try to change anymore.

The others are Branston beans, Longley Farm butter and Seabrooks crisps.

KirstenBlest · 09/03/2024 08:47

@LenaLamont , I've only tried the Tesco 'weetabix' and they were inedible.

The Longley Farm butter is lovely, but I'm happy to eat any British butter.
The spreadables are IMO best avoided.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 09/03/2024 09:49

i can’t remember if it was lidl or aldi that had a cheap weetabix and a main line one. The cheap one was terrible, even my birds wouldn’t touch it.
but the main one was perfectly acceptable

everyone has different tastes though and lines you cross. I love the French waitrose unpasteurised butter, but couldn’t buy it every week (think it’s £3.30!) so normal aldi british is fine!

KirstenBlest · 09/03/2024 10:15

@VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji , my Tesco one was the cheap one. False economy as I didn't manage to eat more than a mouthful.
It went in the compost bin.

I agree with the regular butter being fine. Please buy British when you can because our farmers need support and we have plenty of delicious butter without importing it.

Cat food. My cats love own-brand tinned in jelly food but won't eat cheap kibble unless it is hidden in other food. They won't eat Lidl cat food, which is a pain because I prefer Lidl to Aldi.

prettybird · 09/03/2024 10:34

Fortunately our two moggies (actually beautiful Siamese Wink) like the Lidl Coshida dry stuff. Grin

However, there is no substitute for Dreamies. What is in them that makes them so attractive to all cats? ConfusedShock
