What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

Amazon coffee
ALDIs chocolate covered rich tea biscuits
Tesco's on applicator tampons
Sainsbury's marmite tastes simular just not as thick (Morrisons one is vile)
Sainsbury's cream crackers
And I always buy the cheapest pasta - it all tastes the same and it's what you pair it with!

CurlewKate · 02/03/2024 19:42

Most things from Lidl. Except baked beans and corn flakes and tomato ketchup.

ChocolateTea · 02/03/2024 19:53

We buy most things own brand, apart from Shreddies, fairy liquid, Pepsi max, Heinz honey bbq sauce, Pantene shampoo and conditioner for me, and comfort fabric conditioner.

everything else is own brand. Lidl toilet roll is as good as anything else, as are their sauces, cheese and butter etc.

ChocolateTea · 02/03/2024 19:54

Oh actually….. I only drink decaf, and won’t shift from Yorkshire tea and Nescafé gold.

Kwasi · 02/03/2024 20:05

M&S tea bags.

Willmafrockfit · 02/03/2024 20:07

everything
although i have relented to using fairy washing up liquid but that is the only brand, aside from lurpak, but i can live with lidl danepak

Willmafrockfit · 02/03/2024 20:08

oh, i wouldnt try a different marmite!

GellerYeller · 02/03/2024 20:18

Morrisons crunchy peanut butter. Tried Aldi but it’s too sweet for me.
Another vote for Tesco Shreddies.
Sainsbury own brand unsweetened almond milk. Morrisons’ is vile.
M and S Cornish ice cream. Not sure how that compares price wise though.
Aldi beans and sausages. Or Morrisons.

celticprincess · 02/03/2024 20:19

I always have to go to Aldi for cereal - chocolate pillows as whatever the more expensive versions are my kids won’t eat. I also like the Aldi crunch nut cluster type cereal and it’s much nicer and a lot cheaper than Kelloggs. I do my main shop in Sainsbury’s and their own bean flakes are just as nice if not nicer than kellogs too and such a huge box. I find the Sainsbury’s own brand bourbon and cutest cream type biscuits cheap and tasty too. Prefer Sainsbury’s own blue soya milk to the Alpro brand and so much cheaper. Tried all the supermarket brands too and don’t like any except Sainsbury’s.

celticprincess · 02/03/2024 20:25

Also my autistic child declared Sainsbury’s own tomato ketchup was nicer than Heinz. And we also buy own beans mayo.

penjil · 02/03/2024 20:41

Aldi's marmite. Much better than the original...it is runnier and actually SPREADS on the toast.

The original is too stiff and firm and rips the toast.

penjil · 02/03/2024 20:44

Willmafrockfit · 02/03/2024 20:08

Try the Aldi one. You'll be surprised. 👍

GogoGobo · 02/03/2024 21:01

Waitrose tomato ketchup - 95p and as good as Heinz!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 02/03/2024 21:02

Where do you all find the time to shop around this much? It’s mind blowing how much effort this must all take if you can’t turn up and buy in bulk!

Dearg · 02/03/2024 21:09

Aldi Speciality Peppermint tea - like those tea pigs but cheaper
Aldi tinned cherry tomatoes
M&S tinned cream of chicken soup
Aldi Organic Pinot Grigio

Fairly happy with Aldi’s Almat laundry & Squeezy products, but must have Finish Dishwasher tablets.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 02/03/2024 21:11

Asda low calorie hot chocolate.
it’s the nicest of all of them imo

Sorry @Ulysees , just went back to read the whole thread incase i missed anything out, did you actually say Heinz soup was £2.50 a tin in Morrisons???

Think i need a lie down ShockShock

Morrisons Heinz soup is £1.70 5 tins for £5.

mollyfolk · 02/03/2024 22:04

For me it's everything except:
Coffee - I buy fancy stuff.
Butter - only kerrygold is good enough
and tea which is Barry's. All other tea tastes wrong.

Otherwise it's own brands all the way.

maddiemookins16mum · 02/03/2024 22:25

Aldi own mayo (Bramwells??), I was always a Hellmans but I honestly cannot tell the difference.

HannibalHeyes · 02/03/2024 22:37

Aldi for most things (if they're available). General exceptions, toilet roll as mentioned before, DS won't have any ketchup except Heinz, DW won't have any mayonnaise except Hellmans.

For anyone paying through the nose for "all in one" dishwasher tabs - stop! Go for seperate basic tablets (sometimes hard to find), salt, & rinse aid. Not only is it considerably cheaper, but our mechanic was adamant that it's actually far more effective as well!

mrsbyers · 02/03/2024 22:42

Lidl do the best coconut milk , the top brands are usually mainly watery with just a smaller layer of cream , the Lidl one is the opposite

Aldi marmite

Morrisons special K equivalent

Ulysees · 02/03/2024 22:53

goingtotown · 02/03/2024 21:58

Morrisons Heinz soup is £1.70 5 tins for £5.

This was Morrisons local. It was 2 tins for 3.50 or something I think?

I'll get some of those Aldi cherry tomatoes next time I'm in.

Polish mayo
Nicky loo roll
Sainsbury waitrose or Asda own ketchup

Only thing I can't do is marmite, azera and crumpets have to be Warburton.

If you use coconut milk, look out for block coconut in the international section. Equivalent of 4 cans for about £1. You can use as much or as little as you like and it keeps indefinitely in the fridge.
