What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

Tesco soup at 67p a tin. The minestrone soup is gorgeous.

I was going to pop there after work today. I'll stock up thanks.

Nicky Elite toilet paper - cheaper and better than the rest.

Where do you get that? The one we're using takes a lot of flushing.

Method is lovely, smells great, posh bottle etc but it really isn't any better than cheap alternatives.

It just does NOTHING! It looks nice, it smells nice, but does it leave anything actually clean? No! Any supermarket cleaner does a better job.

In its defence, the passion fruit daily shower spray is amazing. I did try a cheap one but it caught the back of my throat and made me cough
Sticking with the method as it lasts me a while!

Cuppachuchu · 01/03/2024 10:15

M&S ketchup is good and £1.
Morrisons does a chicken curry soup which is very nice.

Cuppachuchu · 01/03/2024 10:17

Method washing up liquid is rubbish.
Ecover is far better, and doesn't dry my hands out. Not cheap, tho.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/03/2024 10:18

Most things in Aldi. Branson beans are so much cheaper than Heinz and much tastier.

Most things tbh. Except fairy liquid, Heinz beans , aerial washing powder and pg tips.

I can promise that Aldi premium washing up liquid is as good as Fairy. Also Aldi washing powder is brilliant - and I am very, very fussy. Good Housekeeping recommended.

Agree on branded tea - mine is Barry’s Gold Blend - and Heinz beans.

Bjorkdidit · 01/03/2024 10:23

Best 'cleaning spray' I've found is Elbow Grease which is about a pound in Home Bargains. The washing up liquid version is good too. Never understood why people pay huge amounts more for Fairy, Finish dishwasher tablets, toothpaste etc. I've seen so many posts from people complaining about paying £4/5+ for something that's a pound or two in HB or Aldi/Lidl. Madness.

HB is a bit of an Aladdin's cave where you can get all sorts much cheaper than main supermarkets. I have a standard list of things I stock up on in there. Eg the proper Spanish alioli is 89p and it's nearly twice that in Morrisons. I also got some Method hand wash in unusual scents for £1/1.50 a bottle. It's lovely, but I wouldn't pay over £3 for it like it is in Tesco/Sainsburys.

Another way to save is to rotate round shops instead of buying the same things each week in the same supermarket and use top up shops to go somewhere different. That way you almost never have to pay 'full price' for non perishables that are frequently on offer.

Only on mumsnet would Waitrose be seen as downscaling. 🤣

I have a waitrose near me and it's cheaper for milk and bread than the iceland or any of our corner shops, I often nip In, I used to feel quite extravagant but I am used to it now 😅

Ulysees · 01/03/2024 10:25

@Bjorkdidit we use elbow grease spray. Tried the washing up liquid but didn't like it.
I think I'll try Aldi washing up liquid again. We've gone back to fairy

@Mrsjayy

We're the same with M&S. They're among the cheapest, or the same price as anywhere else for milk, white sliced bread, big blocks of cheddar cheese, mixed size free range eggs, cans of soup, beans, tomatoes and a lot of 'basic' veg, eg potatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli. Plus they have good reductions and good value meal deal offers and it always feels like a bit of a treat to shop there.

Tarkan · 01/03/2024 10:28

M&S baked beans and it's not the cheapest but the Percy Pig kitchen roll lasts so much longer for us than branded ones I've tried.

I actually really like Morrisons' own brand non-applicator tampons.

Lidl mozzarella, Parmesan and Grana Padano.

Home Bargains do a fruity two in one shampoo and conditioner bar for 99p and it's actually been really good on my normally dry/frizzy/curly hair.

Farmfoods do chicken nuggets which my kids say are just like McDs. You get a massive bag of them for around a fiver. (They have two similar types and we like both of them). You'd get around 6 Birdseye dippers for that price nowadays it seems.

Farmfoods own butter is fine for an every day sort of one, it's slightly smaller than normal butter but a lot cheaper still.

BigFishontheTelly · 01/03/2024 10:28

Winiary Mayonnaise is better than Hellmans. It's £2.25 for 400Ml, in Tesco.

HangryDoughnut · 01/03/2024 10:28

Lidl's mayonaise is the closest to Hellman's I can find, I've found most own brand mayonaise completely inedible!

I’ve had Aldi usual washing up liquid not a fan , didn’t realise there was a premium one. Thanks I’ll give it a go. Can’t get in with their washing powder though. Found it lumpy in my drawer.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/03/2024 10:29

Danpak lidl lurpak

Interesting. I used to buy it when it was GH recommended. They must have re-formulated because it went downhill (I noticed that the GH endorsement had disappeared off the box!) so I switched elsewhere.
Have they re-re-formulated?Grin

SuzieDerkins · 01/03/2024 10:30

Aldi butter, tomato soup, chocolate, Jaffa cakes… I’ll probably be back with more.

ssd · 01/03/2024 10:31

Branston baked beans are much better than heinz

DGPP · 01/03/2024 10:31

M&S or Waitrose beans, their cereals, BBQ sauce.
Can’t compromise on Fairy or Kellogg’s corn flakes

Ulysees · 01/03/2024 10:32

As for branded tea and coffee. I buy Ringtons. Most won't have heard of them. The vans come to your door. It's like going back in time. I can bear other brands of tea but only their instant coffee. I don't know how they make it but it's lovely. They do online but I like getting them from the Ringtons man.

I've just looked online and didn't know this about instant coffee! I'll try it next time.

Asda own brand marmite . A bit thinner than actual marmite , but tastes pretty much the same . Was one of those things I always said I wouldn’t swap , but was recommended on here a while back on a similar thread so gave it a go . Can’t see I would swap back now . £1.99 v £3.10

Aldi nappies. They're better and so much more affordable than the top brand.

We found this out because my aunt told me that sometimes a cheaper nappy can encourage a boy to toilet train. Turns out they were the best ones we ever bought.
