What own brand have you found that's just as good but astonishingly cheaper?

On the way to work yesterday I needed to buy a tin of soup. We eat at work and I didn't want anything expensive. Plus I love soup. I popped into Morrisons daily and Heinz was £2.50 a tin. Morrisons own was £1. I bought their minestrone and it was lovely. Who is buying these expensive tins?

Have you bought anything own brand that's worth it? And as good as leading brands?

Aldi nappies. They're better and so much more affordable than the top brand.

Tootytoot78 · 01/03/2024 09:11

M&S baked beans.

mitogoshi · 01/03/2024 09:12

Lidls version on lurpak spreadable, can't taste the difference

Tlolljs · 01/03/2024 09:12

Most things tbh. Except fairy liquid, Heinz beans , aerial washing powder and pg tips.

M&S baked beans.

Yes to this. My family have not noticed the difference since I stopped buying Heinz - whereas they complained when I tried other varieties.

Tesco soup at 67p a tin. The minestrone soup is gorgeous.

Nospecialcharactersplease · 01/03/2024 09:14

Waitrose pesto is £1.90 and made with a handful of recognisable ingredients, and the only oil is olive oil. Sacla is £3.50 for the same size and full of shite.

ladygindiva · 01/03/2024 09:14

Tesco own nappies and pull-ups. Far superior to the brand names.

Blankscreen · 01/03/2024 09:15

Morrisons own brand Weetabix so much cheaper.

I pretty much buy own brand everything. The only thing I am picky about is Hellman's light mayonnaise other than that we're not fussy.

Pigtailsandall · 01/03/2024 09:15

Tesco own brand Weetabix and shreddies. I think the shreddies even have less sugar than the brand ones.

Edited

Only on mumsnet would Waitrose be seen as downscaling. 🤣

I know but it is £1.60 cheaper in my defence 🤣

Bjorkdidit · 01/03/2024 09:17

Just about everything, in most cases, the 'leading brands' have just spent more on advertising. In blind tasting, they perform poorly, especially Heinz.

M&S or Waitrose tomato soup at about 50 p a tin is loads nicer than Heinz.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/03/2024 09:17

Nicky Elite toilet paper - cheaper and better than the rest.

MelonSmoothie · 01/03/2024 09:17

Breakfast cereals - Tesco or Waitrose v Kellogg's. Kellogg's have got SO expensive!!

Mindymomo · 01/03/2024 09:19

I try to buy supermarket branded baked beans, not as good as Heinz, but ok, soup, I agree there’s lots of nice soup, lots of pasta sauces are just as good. I’ve been caught out on shower gel, bought the 35p Tesco gel and filled up our container, thought all was well as it was being used for over a week, so I got a few more. Then I’ve just seen it’s been moved and another Radox one put in its place. 3 men here and myself use it, nobody has said anything. My Son shops in Lidl, the bread and cakes are really good.

Fizbosshoes · 01/03/2024 09:20

DS insists Aldi baked beans are the best. I don't eat them so I can't verify.

OkayKinkade · 01/03/2024 09:20

A lot of cleaning products. I can't think of one branded cleaner that's markedly better than the cheap ones. The 99p window cleaner in Home Bargains currently is better than Mr Muscle. Same with the spray stain removers. The Pink Stuff spray is £1.99 and works great. Method is lovely, smells great, posh bottle etc but it really isn't any better than cheap alternatives.

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 01/03/2024 09:21

@TheYearOfSmallThings completely agree regarding the toilet roll. DH bought Andrex the other day and it's rubbish in comparison!

Accidentally discovered Sainsburys tomato soup, and it's fab. Also Aldi jaffa cakes.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/03/2024 09:28

It just does NOTHING! It looks nice, it smells nice, but does it leave anything actually clean? No! Any supermarket cleaner does a better job.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/03/2024 09:30

Oh and ASDA smart essentials lightly salted tortilla chips (£0.51) are the best.

PauliesWalnuts · 01/03/2024 09:32

Wholly endorse @TheYearOfSmallThings and her Asda tortilla chips - absolutely the best for a nacho supper.

For me, Lidl own brand parmesan is the best I've ever tried.

skilpadde · 01/03/2024 09:37

Aldi washing powder and Lidl cleaning sprays.

Mammma91 · 01/03/2024 09:52

Morrisons own brand weetabix, Aldi nappies and pull ups, my DS loves Morrisons own tomato soup, boots baby wipes are really good too I find.

prescribingmum · 01/03/2024 10:03

Pretty much everything! As pp has said, the brands just spend a fortune on advertising to make us believe they are superior, I can only think of one item where the brand is actually better which is anchor butter to make clarified butter (we are south Asian and make it as needed). I use supermarket butter for everything else

As children aren’t used to seeing branded boxes, they don’t notice or comment either
