Anyone signed up for this? Payments for shifting your energy use away from peak times/within a given timeslot each day.

Signed up as well, fingers crossed.

Desecratedcoconut · 17/01/2024 16:07

Yes, I signed up today. It has significantly expedited the roast I had planned, early dinner all round.

Filterphobia · 17/01/2024 17:38

I’ve signed up, currently sat with just one light on. We should do quite well hopefully as this time slot is when our usage is usually highest. I’ve had the cooker, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer on during this time period in the last few days so should be easy to save now we are sat with everything turned off.

TheHateIsNotGood · 17/01/2024 18:52

Tonight was my first Saver Session.

How long does it take to find out how many Octopoints (=money) I've earned and do I need to do anything to find out please?

TheHateIsNotGood · 17/01/2024 21:51

I've found the answer to my question - the Octoplus Calculator is "calculating" and I can find out in a "few days".

tribpot · 17/01/2024 22:01

Yep Octopus' definition of "a few days" can be quite elastic, shall we say! It will probably be less than a week, but if they do a load in rapid succession that can slow everything right down.

Filterphobia · 18/01/2024 06:49

I agree @tribpot some have taken longer than a week. I’m anticipating another last minute session this evening with this cold weather we are currently experiencing.

The results are in for the most recent session. I earned 2552 points which equates to £3.19. I was in top 12% which isn’t bad as I actually didn’t turn off as much as I usually do. How has everyone else done?

tribpot · 25/01/2024 19:50

696 Octopoints here so you did better than us, @Filterphobia - well done. Hope @TheHateIsNotGood is pleased to get your first result, and note Octopus' definition of "a few days" in this case was 8.

TheHateIsNotGood · 25/01/2024 20:59

thanks for the heads up - 848 points here.

WombatChocolate · 25/01/2024 21:09

I got 128 points I think. It was worth 23p anyway.
We never get much as we’re not big electricity users anyway, and we wouldn’t be running the washing machine or dishwasher at those times usually. I still like doing it though!

forgotmyusername1 · 27/01/2024 06:19

3768 points

Up to a cumulative £55. Not too shabby. Every saving session pays that days gas bill

Brogues · 27/01/2024 08:05

37p and DH was uncharacteristically in for the last one and said I was wasting my time. I like the kids to recognise we are trying to do our bit and the youngest finds it quite fun.

tribpot · 03/02/2024 07:12

I think yesterday's session was announced so late there wasn't time to revive the thread! I was running around like a blue-arsed fly all afternoon but fortunately out for most of the hour, how did everyone else get on?

sorrynotathome · 03/02/2024 07:16

I was out & about and dithered about joining, then only realised a few minutes before 5 that I hadn't opted in. Doh!

tribpot · 03/02/2024 07:29

I think I vaguely saw something on WhatsApp about them offering a streak reward, so thought it was worth opting in even if we didn't manage to save much energy.

Chasingsquirrels · 03/02/2024 08:47

I had the WhatsApp notification at 3.35pm.
There was a new thread about it /talk/costofliving/4999181-octopus-savings-session-today-2nd-feb-at-5pm

I've got solar and batteries, and generally don't use any grid electricity between 5-6pm.
Someone up thread mentioned that you can discharge and this counts in the same way as a reduction in usage so I've been doing that for the last few sessions.
I typically discharge nearly 2kw in an hour, so at £1.75 per kwh it makes sense to do that and then top up from the grid later in the evening if needed at 29p per kwh. Plus any bonuses. I got £1.60 worth of points last time and I forgot about turning the batteries to discharge until halfway through.

Octopus Savings Session today 2nd Feb at 5pm | Mumsnet

FYI Just noticed this and easily opted in

Filterphobia · 03/02/2024 10:28

I never even had a message or an alert, which is annoying as I would have been eligible for the streak bonuses just for opting in.

I have made £60 from discharging the battery over the sessions

Reluctantadult · 04/02/2024 22:13

I don't seem to get the notifications ever, even though I'm logged in and am in the WhatsApp group. Hoping to see on here next time...

tribpot · 05/02/2024 07:17

Yep normally this thread is how I find out @Reluctantadult but was mad busy on Friday afternoon and didn't have time to post. Also I think in the WhatsApp channel you won't automatically get a notification, unlike with WhatsApps you get from personal contacts. If you go into the channel, have a look for a bell icon at the top right and see if it's a solid white or if it has a line through it.

The Octopus app itself does provide a notification but this can likewise be hit and miss about when it happens, normally it is last.

Finally if you can bear to have the Twitter app, you can set up notifications on the Saving Sessions account, this is normally the first thing they update - on Friday Twitter knew a good 1hr15 before WhatsApp.

tribpot · 08/02/2024 14:08

New Savings Session klaxon!

Just posted on Twitter: https://x.com/SavingSessions/status/1755592556476584092?s=20

Tonight between 6 and 7pm.

Brogues · 08/02/2024 18:03

Just another reminder for the evening crowd. Session 6-7pm i.e. NOW!

TheHateIsNotGood · 14/02/2024 17:42

The results for the most recent 2 sessions are coming in; just added another £2 to my Octoplus balance for not really switching off much for an hour - fridge, freezer, micro, utilities mains, any heating. Nothing much lost in terms of function after only an hour when I switch at least the F and F back on.

After only 3 sessions - I've got £4.22 to credit to my bill so far, with minimal effort - so it's really worth doing I think.

I just do it on my laptop via email notification, just as I 'set' most things for.
