Pagel is an utterly shameless fearmonger, along with the rest of Indie Sage. There is no scientific method to what she posts, she is just exploiting and abusing her already anxious readership. No wonder Sky News, The Guardian and Channel 4 all like her because they're in the same business.

I thought this was a good comeback to one of her pals.

@herecomesthsun

Maybe she is trying to, you know, have discussions about covid, which are open to a wider public?

A bit like we do on here, but not anonymous?

It is a good thing to do in the situation we're in.

And Independent Sage aren't a homogenous mass, they're going to have slightly different opinions, and expertise just as SAGE do.

It's such a complicated picture, there isn't one way to look at it.

I agree with you @herecomesthsun, it's just something I've been pondering a lot - how to be a responsible scientist in an era of a public health emergency + social media being what it is.

In the old days you would take time to put out a statement or read a paper before sharing it with the public, now it's just so easy to reactively tweet your opinion (where you'll quickly lose control as it is picked up by other accounts) or retweet someone else's, and I think as a scientist it's easy to not scrutinise it the same way you would other sources.

Just the thoughts of an academic who is very glad to not be in the public eye because it sounds like a nightmare!

Piggywaspushed · 04/12/2021 18:34

@riveted1

I think they all need to stop tweeting slightly different takes tbh *@sirfredfredgeorge*

Might be a slightly harsh opinion but I think if you're part of a body like iSAGE it would be better to have all pandemic related content coming from a single managed twitter feed

I get that if it's your profession you will naturally want to tweet about it, but it causes so much confusion (and in this case she clearly hadn't read the full thread full enough)

Hmm.... JCVI tweet separately too. Many of the scientists use Twitter as platform for discussion and raising issues and public understanding of science.

Pagle's retweet was a misstep for sure but without some of the scientists on Twitter much would not be known and the government (and groups such as HART) wouldn't be held to account.

Many MPs have Twitter accounts.

Very much agree with the reply here

It makes me less anxious to have accurate data. There are very clear charts on the Indie Sage broadcasts.

And the word "fearmonger" is a tired old overused cliche, usually by people with their own political agenda, which it would appear that you have.

Piggywaspushed · 04/12/2021 18:37

Oh look, we aren't going to suggest they are all communists again are we? Sridhar has no political affiliations.

She also has nothing whatsoever to do with Pagel's tweets /retweet today so why the mudslinging?

riveted1 · 04/12/2021 18:37

Yes @Piggywaspushed - I'm meaning this for all bodies.

It's equally confusing to have the members of JCVI tweeting slightly different takes of decisions regarding vaccine policy.

I don't think HART (or it's many spawned subgroups) is worth referencing!

herecomesthsun · 04/12/2021 18:39

Interesting that people are trying to discredit Indy Sage just at this point in the pandemic.

herecomesthsun · 04/12/2021 18:40

I don't see how you can demand that a load of academics all are limited to one twitter feed and never say anything that has not previously been agreed.

That just isn't how it works.

Maybe not but they have a hell of a lot of influence...

As I said in my reply @herecomesthsun, it's not something I'm demanding, it's something I've been pondering.

Not specific to iSAGE - to all members of groups who are advising on coronavirus & vaccine policy

riveted1 · 04/12/2021 18:43

Maybe not but they have a hell of a lot of influence...

Yes...see my extensive posting history of my issues with HART et al.

manolantern · 04/12/2021 18:46

Surely they discredited themselves when their predictions of disaster (100k cases a day etc) following the July 19th unlocking were proved to be so wrong. For which they offered no apology. And also the murkiness around how they are funded and who is behind them ('The Citizens') and news of their planned pivot onto climate change. It was clear they were jostling for power and influence.

Anyway this is off topic for this thread I think.

Piggywaspushed · 04/12/2021 18:46

Now they really are a scary bunch.

Piggywaspushed · 04/12/2021 18:47

HART that is.

manolantern · 04/12/2021 18:47

I've started calling them Trans Sage :) .

Piggywaspushed · 04/12/2021 18:50

Devi Sridhar is not a member of Indie SAGE.

Piggywaspushed · 04/12/2021 18:50

@manolantern

Why?

Those predictions were made by different scientists closer to government and repeated by politicians at the most senior level, so you can't blame them for originating that. Everyone was

They seem a good deal less murky than HART (not saying much). It seems to be a well intentioned shoestring operation to me.

My impression of them is that they are articulating what quite a lot of academics in health are likely to think. That seems very likely to be a good thing, we need better STEM discussion.

Climate change is another key issue for the future on which we desperately need informed scientific debate so it is a logical step for them.

Happy to stop discussing them if the sniping stops. But I'm really glad they exist.

herecomesthsun · 04/12/2021 18:57

Sorry, distracted by some disco dancing there.

Prety much everyone was expecting higher cases after July 19th, it was a nice surprise when the numbers fell.

MarshaBradyo · 04/12/2021 19:00

I don’t really follow Independent Sage

Up to them to exist though some people will appreciate them

I rate other groups higher eg JCVI who get a lot of stick and criticism on here.

Piggywaspushed · 04/12/2021 19:07

JCVI do have a different job though and are meant to be an utterly impartial advisory body. Indie SAGE tbh can do what they like. More concerned about JCI being biased than Indie SAGE, given their important remit. Not saying they are (now Dingwall has gone) but profligate tweeting from JCVI members would be a concern.

containsnuts · 04/12/2021 19:08

To the Christina Pagel critics above - do you actually listen to what she says in the ISage videos or are you just reacting to the tweets out of context?

MarshaBradyo · 04/12/2021 19:12

Yes JCVI do a good job against a lot of public scrutiny and flack

And agree iSAGE are freer to tweet opinions, which will be according to their
position

People tend to go with those who re affirm what they already think anyway

BBC News - Coronavirus: UK tightens travel rules amid Omicron spread
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-59534685

"There are 27 cases already in England and that's growing and Nigeria now is second only to South Africa in terms of linked cases to Omicron."

Out of date about the number of cases, but interesting that Nigeria was one of the countries mentioned in the disputed (and maybe not sensitively written) retweet of Professor Pagel this morning.
