@boys3

Some of the more significant council case increases for this current week in progress - starting from Monday 29th November spec date - as compared with the equivalent position reported last Saturday.

Greewich up 403 cases, 71%

Lewisham up 319 cases, 50%

Lambeth up 335 cases, 47%

Central Beds up 325 cases, 30%

Cornwall up 369 cases, bigger population than any of the above, so a less dramatic 19%

Adding between 200 and 300 cases.

Reigate up 204 34%

Bexley up 222 36%

Bromley up 250 26%

Croydon up 281 30%

Liverpool up 225 21%

MK up 259 22%

Newham up 273 , 48%

Plymouth up 217 18%

Portsmouth up 299 43%

Redbridge up 253 40%

South Gloucestershire up 280 30%

Southend up 228 34%

Southwark up 290 44%

Sutton up 235. 33%

Waltham Forest up 208, 32%

The smaller areas, so relatively smaller case increase as compared with those above, but an increase of at least 40%

South Bucks up 94 41%

South Hams up 186 52%

West Devon up 103. 60%

Forest of Dean up 85 40%

Folkestone up 127. 43%

Dacorum up 160. 41%

Harborough up 147 49%

Boston up 79 43%

Daventry up 129 64%

South Northants up 158 45%

Adur up 65* 42%

Hartlepool up 65 43%

Worth noting several of the above are increasing from a relatively low base.

In case anyone is wondering

Brentwood up 87 cases. 31%

Overall the Essex districts up 1143 cases, 23%. Only Cambridgeshire of the county areas at 24% has a bigger percentage increase.

In contrast *North Yorkshire has a 22% fall for this period, with net falls also for Cumbria, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, low single digit increases in Somerset, Worcestershire Warwickshire

Thanks @boys3, that's huge increases in Greenwich, Lewisham and Lambeth. All right next to each other. It looks like those are the key areas to watch for hospital impacts from 11 Dec to end of year.
lonelyplanet · 04/12/2021 19:56

Ashford looks to be rising quickly too.

MRex · 04/12/2021 19:58

On the debate, there is surely a place for every scientist's voice. Nobody has got the analysis 100% correct. I've criticised members of iSage, but I still read them to see what they found and to consider their opinion. Sometimes I disagree with members of Sage too, certainly I've disagreed with JCVI many times. Things move quickly and it takes time for researched and peer reviewed facts to emerge, there's a place for every logical thought. When they screw up, you can chuckle if you dislike Pagel or wince if you like her, either way take it as a reminder that nobody is correct all the time. I believe we should take everyone's data, throw a pinch of salt at anyone's analysis and come to our own considered conclusions.

MarshaBradyo · 04/12/2021 20:01

Tbh I don’t even do Twitter so saves that issue.

If they don’t make it to R4 I probably don’t hear much from them.

Easier as someone else edits for me.

JanglyBeads · 04/12/2021 21:04

But Marsha do you trust the BBC to edit the “information” you receive?

MarshaBradyo · 04/12/2021 21:12

Jangly I trust R4 more than headline print / online media, so BBC is a bit broad. Why “ “ on information?

So I’m usually hearing people speak rather than the headline post interview which tends to try and provoke emotive response for click / sales. And is also put through filter of the paper who uses it next. So The Guardian will present it differently to The Telegraph.

Take Andrew Pollard whom I do rate after listening recently - I got insight that I hadn’t got elsewhere. Many other experts too.

So I try to hear people speak first and also look out for good programmes like More or Less, or others.

Is it true that no-one has died from known Omicron yet?!

UK is reaching as though this variant is hellish, could it be that its a milder strain that will become dominant and actually eradicate the danger placing it on par with a Cole?

AbstractDot · 04/12/2021 21:23

Cold!

bordermidgebite · 04/12/2021 21:32

Fingers crossed , but it's not been long detected and deaths do lag substantially

JanglyBeads · 04/12/2021 21:36

I used to always trust Radio 4 but have become rather more aware of some biases during the pandemic, eg re schools.

I used inverted commas around information as there have been times when I’ve questioned how objective what the BBC produces is.

More or Less is very good, generally.

I don't beleive there have been any confirmed deaths, but given the number of cases, you wouldn't expect there to be!

If it has a high rate of reinfection and causes similar mortality to delta, that would still be problematic

Loads of detail on current patient profiles in Tshwane hospitals. Many hopeful indicators at this stage!

www.samrc.ac.za/news/tshwane-district-omicron-variant-patient-profile-early-features

wintertravel1980 · 04/12/2021 22:37

The government / UKHSA have acknowledged the hypothesis / observation noted in this thread:

New analysis conducted by the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) indicates that the window between infection and infectiousness may be shorter for the Omicron variant...

www.gov.uk/government/news/tests-required-before-travel-to-uk-and-nigeria-added-to-red-list

Looks like the average incubation period might indeed be 3 days (1 day less that Delta).

Majority of patients are under 50 and include a fairly large percentage of children under 9. That they're not requiring oxygen could be because of their age I guess but the virus is affecting much much younger people.

Yes, tentatively positive, especially the statement "The main observation that we have made over the last two weeks is that the majority of patients in the COVID wards have not been oxygen dependent. SARS-CoV-2 has been an incidental finding in patients that were admitted to the hospital for another medical, surgical or obstetric reason."

Agree with this and the rest of the post. I find it disturbing that it appears that some think otherwise and will resort to personal attacks and ridicule to discredit people they disagree with.

Yes I’ve felt like that re JCVI on here.

I remember Andrew Pollard sounding annoyed at media spin on stuff too. Really felt for him.

borntobequiet · 05/12/2021 08:16

I haven’t seen ad hominem attacks as such on the JCVI, which anyway is a group not a person. Robust criticism, yes. That, you can agree with or otherwise.
I’m not sure that media spin constitutes an attack, though the media on both “sides” regularly does a good job on misunderstanding/misrepresenting/ignoring important issues, depending on its political viewpoint (this includes the BBC).

MarshaBradyo · 05/12/2021 08:18

No I didn’t say spin was attack. He sounded annoyed and who knows what impact society has when it does this with vaccine developers or expert groups.

Definitely seen ridicule on here re individuals on JCVI and the group. May make people feel better as decisions are not what they wanted.
