@sirfredfredgeorge

Why haven't the vaccines been "tweaked" for Delta let alone any new variant, we were told this was going to be a feature of them? Yet we've had no tweaking and no even announcements of studies?

Good question and I've wondered this too. There are potentially big problems in doing this though. For instance, as soon as it's announced that a new vaccine update is in progress, people will want to wait for the updated vaccine, and not get jabbed with the inferior old version - leading to weeks to months of poor uptake. If the current vaccine is still pretty effective, the transition could end up having unintended adverse consequences.

sirfredfredgeorge · 25/11/2021 18:13

lonelyplanet One thing to note is that it's not out-competing delta to have that effect in the share, there were extremely low cases previously, and delta cases have continued the same during the period, the high percentage of the variant is because of its growth, not out-competing delta.

It would be interesting to know if the area / groups where the variant is growing had any concurrent delta at the same time or if it's a new introduction into a more naïve area. ie is vaccine / delta infection protective or not?

JanglyBeads · 25/11/2021 18:39

Only 24% of SA pop vaccinated anyway…

lonelyplanet · 25/11/2021 18:43

Fred - let's hope. More analysis here:

I am a bit concerned about the growth in SEN schools there.

BBC Breaking News - Africa travel restrictions over Covid variant fear

1990butfeel21 · 25/11/2021 21:06

Wow. That's incredibly quick. Good. But they must be very worried to move so fast. Usually they give days notice.

JanglyBeads · 25/11/2021 21:09

It’s so quick it worries me, IYSWIM

Me to.
1990butfeel21 · 25/11/2021 21:12

@JanglyBeads same. I have no faith they've learnt their lesson and are moving quickly for any other reason then they are panicking

MarshaBradyo · 25/11/2021 21:34

Don’t panic yet

We’ve had other scares

1990butfeel21 · 25/11/2021 21:36

@MarshaBradyo true. It's their swift action (for once) that has alarmed me...

1990butfeel21 · 25/11/2021 21:37

When Nanny is back is when I will panic.

MarshaBradyo · 25/11/2021 21:45

I think there’s political upside to being early because if you wait it’s really heavily criticised

But I know we don’t know yet

If it’s square one I’m throwing in the towel on the whole thing not starting from scratch again! Nearly two years in

1990butfeel21 · 25/11/2021 21:49

@MarshaBradyo same.

I'm getting married in 3 weeks. Was feeling hopeful. Not so much after today!

Came on to say just this! They never usually act quickly, very worrying.

@MRex hope you’re still feeling better

Wakemeuuuup · 25/11/2021 21:53

FFS. I've had enough of this shit now. Does anyone know how many fans travelled from South Africa last week for the rugby?

JanglyBeads · 25/11/2021 22:07

Just to distract a moment - we discussed Germany briefly a week or so again. Good thread reiterating the kind of things the OG OP (!) used to tell us. Remember Corona taxis?

Agree, and please remember this is the data thread, let's leave speculation for the other threads.
Franklin12 · 25/11/2021 22:09

Not sure this the right thread. Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction if it isn’t.

My DH treated positive for CV19 last week. Does anyone know whether he is still likely to test positive beginning of Jan (when we plan to go to Italy). What is the % of people who still test positive after 1 month and 3 months (when we are planning to go on holiday again). Percentages would be great if anyone knows please.

We need a PCR test for the holiday in Feb 22.

mrshoho · 25/11/2021 22:17

Good that action is being taken swiftly but still the quarantine in hotels doesn't begin until 4am Sunday! How many flights will be leaving these countries before then? Anyone arriving before Sunday can isolate at home and no doubt use public transport to get there. Here we go again.

1990butfeel21 · 25/11/2021 22:17

@mrshoho flights are suspended until then.

mrshoho · 25/11/2021 22:26

Thanks @1990butfeel21 that sounds better. Confusing though as work colleague has posted saying her parents are flying back Saturday getting in before the new restrictions.
