Being reported by the Times today to try and encourage the uptake in younger people.

I’m sure there’ll be many people along shortly to say how good it is, Covidiots, granny killers etc but this is the start of a slippery slope. It won’t just be pubs, clubs and restaurants it’ll soon go for everything.

The tests in Denmark can be with LF or PCR. There may be some people avoiding restaurants in order to avoid testing but it would be odd. The system has been in place since April and will be gone in October. Before my vaccine I went 3 times a week usually to the test site next to my regular supermarket, I expect most people fitted it in in the same way. They can’t eliminate risk because the tests are not 100% but it means chains of infection will likely be picked up quickly. Ie. The system works because everyone contributes by being tested regularly. Britain couldn’t manage this because people would always try to cheat the system and undermine it. And technology is less extensively used. Testing imo is biggest lesson I’ve learnt from this whole thing. Prepare if for the next pandemic id invest in diagnostics.

grapewine · 11/07/2021 09:02

I go for the PCR two times a week in Denmark. Covers me for any spontaneous plans, and it's two minutes in and out. I have no problem with the covid pass. Second jab in August.

GalesThisMorning · 11/07/2021 09:02

In my home country children need their full vaccine schedule to access state schools. It's not a big deal. British people will get used to this.

bumbleymummy · 11/07/2021 09:05

We shouldn’t have to ‘get used to it’.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/07/2021 09:10

“It would take a lot of new legislation for the government to control who can access private business services like pubs. I wonder which pubs will attract more custom, the ones restricting the number of customers or the ones not hmm“

BBC paper review last night suggesting 50% of the public believe the Govt. has got it wrong and will proceed with the same precautions. Presumably, then, fairly even split with customers voting with their feet.
In the absence of effective leadership, maybe a reasonably good outcome. Plenty of customers to go round and everyone is comfortable with their surroundings.

newstart1234 · 11/07/2021 09:12

Bumbleymummy - i don’t think you’ll have to get used to it. They should have set it up 6 months ago, it’s a bit late now. The nhs is well and truly on its knees. We’ll have to get used to that 😏 maybe we already are.

It’s a bit of a sacrifice for a lot of benefit for those in Denmark anyhow.

LightAsTheBreeze · 11/07/2021 09:14

@Kitkat151

It’s fine by me....went to Wimbledon this week and it was no problem showing bar code from the nhs app....I took my 85 year old mum and just downloaded the nhs app for her the day before
NHS app took 3 days to pass the checks with me so she was lucky if she only downloaded it the day before.

“We shouldn’t have to ‘get used to it’.“

Why? Every living creature has to adapt to changing circumstances on our planet, have since the dawn of time. I suspect your average peasant circa mid 13th century would have bitten your hand off for a face mask or a vaccination. Even then, people understood that things don’t stand still, circumstances evolve. Why are we so out of touch with that idea now?

This may be a walk in the park compared to what we’re all going to have to cope with in 30 years if world leaders’ don’t pull their heads out of their backsides and take effective steps against climate change.

Face masks? We may well be walking around with oxygen masks - or swimming around. Are people going to moan about having to get used to that too?

Humankind really isn’t special.

newstart1234 · 11/07/2021 09:18

I arrived in the UK recently and I’ve noticed performance Covid precautions here, you don’t get them in Denmark 🙂 Just moderate sensible measures to break chains of infection. It’s a bit of a culture shock.

This exactly Why can’t we just simply do this. Why is it that much to ask just to help us get through this? I personally don’t think we need for restaurant etc but for theatres, concerts etc Why not?
sleepwouldbenice · 11/07/2021 09:49

@bumbleymummy

We shouldn’t have to ‘get used to it’.
And here’s the reason why again. Surprise surprise
MotherCanDoIt · 11/07/2021 10:16

@tigger1001 tell me how vaccination is a protected characteristic?

GalesThisMorning · 11/07/2021 10:19

@MrsSkylerWhite I agree. We will have to get used to a lot of things, just as we always have. A vaccine that is, for the majority, safe and effective is neither terrifying nor a hardship. For me anyway. I'm a minority view on mumsnet I think!

Well that’s nothing new. It’s been on its knees for years.

We have to get used to living with a new virus. We shouldn’t have to get used to having our basic freedoms curtailed because of one.
MrsSkylerWhite · 11/07/2021 11:16

“We have to get used to living with a new virus. We shouldn’t have to get used to having our basic freedoms curtailed because of one.“

Don’t you see though, “getting used to” means accepting that things have changed, including what we can now consider our basic freedoms.

Society has lost many basic freedoms over the centuries, generally to the benefit of the population as a whole. It’s evolution. We have to adapt. Nothing is set in stone.

HelloMissus · 11/07/2021 11:26

I think the vast majority of folk would cheerfully PCR twice a week for full freedoms.
But there’s not a cat on hell’a chance that people on MN would have been satisfied with that as a sufficient risk reduction.
So we’ve ended up where even if you’re taking regular PCR tests you still have to self isolate. And you still can’t open your theatre or festival.

There are some things that we can abd should accept but no, having our life controlled by a virus that is mild/asymptomatic for the vast majority of people is not one of them. It’s a slippery slope. People really shouldn’t be so complacent about their freedom.
sleepwouldbenice · 11/07/2021 13:34

It's what it boils down to you see, unless of course you are in deal about the impact of covid across health and the economy and the world.
Vaccines are the way out. But given variants and the impact they have we can support this by asking those who can't or don't want the vaccine to test themselves.
Interesting stance if they dont

sleepwouldbenice · 11/07/2021 13:34
  • in denial
GalesThisMorning · 11/07/2021 14:05

@bumbleymummy I think that a majority of people, myself included, do not see vaccine passports as akin to having our lives controlled by a virus. We are lucky we have vaccines, but those who don't want them can just abstain and miss out on certain things as a result.

I've never had unlimited freedom in my life and neither have you. I don't even have unlimited bodily autonomy, really. I can't injest certain banned substances. I can't travel to large swathes of the world without vaccines, even prior to covid. I guess I am okay with that.

bumbleymummy · 11/07/2021 15:03

I can't travel to large swathes of the world without vaccines, even prior to covid.

Where? I’ve travelled a lot and I don’t think I’ve ever had to have a compulsory vaccine to do so although some were recommended.

We have up our freedoms for a year to ‘protect the nhs’. Getting it back shouldn’t be conditional on whether or not we have a vaccine. It’s supposed to be the default position. If you’re vaccinated, you’ve done all you can to reduce your risk. If you’re still afraid to go out then don’t.

roguetomato · 11/07/2021 15:16

@bumbleymummy when can you see it's not all about protect NHS or protect vulnerable anymore. Have you not seen what's happening? If it was that easy, it was over already. How can you justify unnecessary death to anyone?

BluebellsGreenbells · 11/07/2021 15:28

you’re vaccinated, you’ve done all you can to reduce your risk. If you’re still afraid to go out then don’t.

That’s not quite how it works is it?

DD18 fully vaccinated goes out with many more unvaccinated friends. Her risk is higher because they aren’t vaccinated. It would be greatly reduced if they were vaccinated.

She’s protecting them, not the other way round.

whymewhyme · 11/07/2021 15:36

So you can sit at Wimbledon mask free in a full capacity venue, got to Wembley tonight mask free al without showing a vaccine passport yet you cant go to aldi without a vaccine passport....makes no sence lol
