Being reported by the Times today to try and encourage the uptake in younger people.

twitter.com/thetimes/status/1413755203183161347?s=21

I’m sure there’ll be many people along shortly to say how good it is, Covidiots, granny killers etc but this is the start of a slippery slope. It won’t just be pubs, clubs and restaurants it’ll soon go for everything.

I can't have the vaccine for medical reasons. I would feel safer if Covid tests continued to be free to anyone who wants one, as people would be more likely to use them!

XenoBitch · 10/07/2021 13:08

What if you don't have the app, or even a smartphone?

MaxNormal · 10/07/2021 13:11

Tbh, I think those who can't have vaccine for medical reasons or vulnerable people who vaccine don't work well would feel safer with this approach, so they can feel safer rather than mixing without restriction

Some will, some won't. I don't feel safer at all, I actually feel really othered by this policy.

I also have a lot of sympathy for those that are not taking the vaccine out of what others would describe as choice. My health issues stem from appalling damage due to a bad reaction to a medication.
Psychologically I would have fared far worse had I felt at all pressured or coerced into taking the medication that damaged me. After what I've been through, I can't in good consciounce ask another human being to take that risk.

HelloMissus · 10/07/2021 13:13

There a slowing of vaccine take up in the young, so this is a push to encourage them.
It probably won’t even happen. But as long as it’s roundly and consistently reported as a possibility, it should do its job.

Lucidas · 10/07/2021 13:23

I don’t mind. The more adults are vaccinated, the more we can move the conversation away from vaccinating children in order to reach herd immunity (ie what they’re doing in the US)

RedToothBrush · 10/07/2021 13:27

I know someone who is going to Wimbledon and as that's a test event you need to either be double vaccinated or have a negative lateral flow test. But the test is done at home, so what's to stop someone reporting a negative test but not actually having done one? Other than the text from nhs, no proof is required.
Pointless^

This^

Friend who went to Wimbledon in the week said exactly this too.

I feel its probably nudge theory / testing the political waters again at this stage.

RedToothBrush · 10/07/2021 13:30

I also think the government are starting to panic about the app being deleted.

Passport on phone means people more likely to keep it and have movement monitored.

The government will be well aware of the decline in check in on the app despite an uptick in the hospitality trade already.

roguetomato · 10/07/2021 13:32

@MaxNormal
I'm so sorry to hear that. I think I feel different because my dc was lucky enough not to be affected by medical intervention over the years, despite having adverse reaction to meds, complications after surgery, and trial meds that a lot of other children had to drop due to strong adverse effects.

noblegiraffe · 10/07/2021 13:34

Your vaccine status is on the NHS app not the Test and Trace app.

RedToothBrush · 10/07/2021 13:41

Why would i want to download any government app.

The privacy issues aren't small.

noblegiraffe · 10/07/2021 13:43

Yes but you said that the govt were concerned about people deleting the T&T app and not being able to check their movements.

Vaccine passport on phone doesn't mean that people will keep the T&T app because they are different apps.

Mummasdiary2021 · 10/07/2021 13:46

It's pointless though as you don't have to have had the jabs. It's also acceptable to have had a negative test the day before. I haven't had the jabs and I wouldnt (for medical reasons and because I'm nursing a baby).

RedToothBrush · 10/07/2021 13:47

Government know trust in their apps is through the floor...

And they make money off your health data or intend to.

Using the app obliges you to sign up to certain dubious ts and cs.

BarefootHippieChick · 10/07/2021 14:01

If they start charging for lateral flow tests then I'll be using the free ones that come from school. And if I have to pay for them then I'll stop testing my kids twice a week.

noblegiraffe · 10/07/2021 14:04

The suggestion is that testing of school kids will end at the end of September.

ConcernedAuntie · 10/07/2021 14:04

@XenoBitch

What if you don't have the app, or even a smartphone?
I have a smartphone but live out in the sticks where reception is rubbish. You can request a paper version from the NHS. Applied for mine on Tuesday it arrived this morning. From memory they just request your NHS number, date of birth and postcode.
roguetomato · 10/07/2021 14:28

As ConcernedAuntie said, you can get the paper version. I've seen it on other forum that it maybe a good idea anyway to get a paper copy, since certain country only accept paper copy.

MaxNormal · 10/07/2021 14:45

So if you're testing rather than vaccinated, you request a new paper copy to arrive several times a week? Sounds... practical.

ConcernedAuntie · 10/07/2021 14:49

If you have a mobile phone if the government want to track your movements they can. Ditto debit/credit cards they know exactly what you buy and where.

Paper copy is for the vaccine. I have no clue for the test.

Exactly the same situation here @MaxNormal and I agree - I would never expect others to take a vaccine that I can't take, whatever their reasons. I love how you've worded this.

I know that our view is not very popular on Mumsnet though!

MaxNormal · 10/07/2021 15:14

@MrsFelicianoLopez I'm sorry you're also in that situation. I suppose everyone's view is informed by their own life experience.

The whole will they/won't they with the covid passports that has been going on for months has emotionally wrung me out. It's hard not knowing what the world will be like when the actual pandemic threat subsides - will they drift back to normal as we knew it or are we looking at something very changed? The latter frightens me, and the uncertainly stresses me, but what can we do really?

BringBackThinEyebrows · 10/07/2021 15:32

@MaxNormal

According to the news report, it will be show proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test in the past 24 hours, which is fine as long as the Covid tests are still free to access

Just when they've said they'll no longer be free.
So anyone that can't have the vaccine/both doses will have the burden of additional expenses if they don't wish to be socially excluded.
Tbh it affects me personally very little but the principle is appalling.

Who has said covid tests will no longer be free? Does it refer to PCR tests? I can't find anything online to suggest this is changing in the UK.
NearlyAlwaysInsane · 10/07/2021 15:45

This is nonsense. So when they reopen the economy up to tourism from countries with no equivalent passport systems, pubs/restaurants/clubs are going to enforce this? Like heck they are. And nor should they Grin

The nonsense continues.

Ylvamoon · 10/07/2021 15:59

This was always going to end in a 2 tier society.

The vaccinated v un-vaccinated.

Truth is, there have been numerous vaccination programs from smallpox via polio to flu. All very successful, why do people think this is going to be different?
