Justin Trudeau, Canadian PM, lying about the UK's "third wave"

God, politicians are all as bad as each other, aren't they? Trudeau's coming under a lot of pressure because of Canada's slow vaccine rollout. So what does he do? Stand up in Parliament and lie about the apparently "very serious third wave" that we are apparently suffering Hmm

And I thought he was supposed to be one of the good ones!

Wow. Just an outright lie.

Wakeupin2022 · 15/04/2021 16:53

What a bizarre claim to make.

But we've already seen it with the EU and some politicians from EU Member states. When there political future is threatened then they come out on the attack. Truth is not at all important.

It's normal in non Covid times but everything seems so amplified at the moment as the stakes are so high.

PickAChew · 15/04/2021 16:55

"One of the good ones" with a history of blacking up. He's always been a bit off.

Umbivalent · 15/04/2021 17:00

Good point! Also a fair amount of nepotism going on...

And why just lie? In English? I mean, did he not think we'd notice?! Hmm

ie, it's not like an EU leader Macron saying nonsense things about the UK, that may or may not be down to translation/interpretation. Just an out and out, provable lie!

Politicians everywhere are really feeling the heat now. This has gone on a long time. Pandemic fatigue is high. Vaccines are the only answer, but rollouts haven’t been plain sailing for many countries.

Leaders are getting desperate. The lie is shocking though, agreed.

ConstantlyChanging · 15/04/2021 17:19

Boris Johnson himself literally said that the third wave would ‘wash up on our shores within weeks’.

Umbivalent · 15/04/2021 17:21

Justin Trudeau stated that the UK is currently suffering a very serious third wave, despite our vaccination programme. Are we? Hmm

Yes, but we are not "currently suffering a very serious third wave" which is what Trudeau falsely said.
Umbivalent · 15/04/2021 17:25

Sorry, just looked again, he says we are "facing" a very serious third wave. Despite our vaccination programme.

OP posts:
Umbivalent · 15/04/2021 17:25

"Facing" implies something you are doing now. Not "expecting".

After 10 years as an immigrant I take everything I read about other countries with a massive pinch of salt unless the person talking actually lives there (or at least has lived there long term). People constantly bullshit about countries they don't live in, journalists and politicians alike.

It is bizarre for him to tell such an obvious lie, though. How embarrassing for him.

Cailleach1 · 15/04/2021 17:33

I think facing means something which is expected to happen. You're looking at it, maybe imminently. 'Shops are facing, or will be facing shortages' sort of thing.

Umbivalent · 15/04/2021 17:34

Oh dear, have I done him wrong Blush

OP posts:
Umbivalent · 15/04/2021 17:34

Still, he states as a fact that we are facing a third wave. Are we?

More Covid washing up on our shores is not a serious third wave, is it?

OP posts:
ElphabaTheGreen · 15/04/2021 17:38

Sorry OP - he is just paraphrasing Boris by saying ‘facing’. I think you’ve read it incorrectly.

That said, I thought we’d had our third wave. I’m NHS staff and we referred to that shit show over December to March as the third wave. We had that spike around September which we referred to as the second wave.

BunsyGirl · 15/04/2021 17:38

“Facing” does not necessarily mean happening now...but many people will interpret it as that as well he knew!

HolmeH · 15/04/2021 17:38

You can’t say we are facing a 3rd wave however you take it. We aren’t currently in one nor do we have any clue if there’ll be another one. Our vaccine programme you’d hope would stop a 3rd wave in terms of deaths & serious illness but we can’t predict the future. We certainly are not currently facing an imminent threat of a very serious 3rd wave.. vaccines are working..

I like Justin T, this comment is peculiar

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/04/2021 17:39

Facing means it’s expected to happen. I would say we haven’t ruled it out and are bearing the possibility in mind but I don’t think we’re expecting it.

Cailleach1 · 15/04/2021 17:39

It's only my opinion; not gospel!! The audience he is addressing is the Canadian electorate and how they receive it is his only concern, again in my opinion.
I hope there won't be a third wave.

Umbivalent · 15/04/2021 17:42

Yes. This. We are not, in fact, "facing a very serious third wave".

So, he was wrong. Stood up and said it, to dig himself out of a hole...

OP posts:
Wakeupin2022 · 15/04/2021 17:42

It may be he's picked up on what Boris has said and also some scientists.

It is thought that infections will rise again once we fully open up.

But if we were facing a 3rd wave at this time then we would not be opening up the way we are.

But its probably unrealistic to think that it will be as rosy in October time. But if enough people are vaccinated and hospitalizations / deaths remain low then no major issue.

Umbivalent · 15/04/2021 17:43

Also another good point!

So, I revert to my previous opinion that politicians are all the same...

*hospitalisations

Bloody autocorrect. It's bad enough at the best if times but I have never spelt anything in the American way and don't intend to start now Grin

peak2021 · 15/04/2021 17:45

Hero to zero in just a short period of time, seems to be for Justice Trudeau. Almost as quick as Ang San Su Kyi.
