Is she jumping the vaccine queue?

Fullofpudding · 16/02/2021 01:15

My DSil got a text from her GP offering her a covid vaccine which she has booked for tomorrow. She's only 45 and she reckons she's been added to the list because of her high BMI. She's lost loads of weight since her GP last saw her so now has a normal BMI. I can't help thinking she's now jumping the queue but she can't get hold of her GP when she tried to query it. Just wondered what other MN thought Confused

She booked, so clearly not trying to query it

High BMI is in group 6, so likely to be that

SleepingStandingUp · 16/02/2021 01:18

I don't think obesity is in the Group 6 criteria. Is she down as a carer for anyone or any other medical stuff? What is her job?
At this point I'd say if her pulling out is likely to waste a vaccine then she should take it

SleepingStandingUp · 16/02/2021 01:21

I take it back, I'm wrong. BMI over 40 is on the lost

ittakes2 · 16/02/2021 01:22

A BMI of over 40 is in group 6 but so are other conditions.

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 16/02/2021 01:23

She got a text from her GP offering her the vaccine = she is not jumping the queue.

MrsEPSA · 16/02/2021 01:23

I got a text today. I'm in my twenties, idk why I've been offered it. I'm obese, but I haven't been to a GP appointment for years...

Fullofpudding · 16/02/2021 01:24

She works in a supermarket which is why she went ahead with it as she's pretty worried about getting it. I'd not thought about her pulling out and wasting it as that would be even worse! I know of others that have had the jab as they happen to know someone who works at the vaccine place and think that's just as bad but then it's a waste isn't it if they are throwing them away.

Does it matter?. The more people we can get vaccinated the better.

Fullofpudding · 16/02/2021 01:25

I guess we're all going to get done at some point.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/02/2021 01:27

Much better she went ahead than wasted time and possibly the jab too. I'm 60 but no health conditions and I don't need to be out and about... Personally I'm fine if gps accidentally insert some supermarket workers etc in the queue ahead of me.

Redglitter · 16/02/2021 01:27

Does it really matter, she's got the message from her GP. She hasn't lied to get it. If she's getting it earlier than expected then that's great. The more people that get it the better for the rest of us

GloGirl · 16/02/2021 01:29

@NomNomNominativeDeterminism

She got a text from her GP offering her the vaccine = she is not jumping the queue.
Agreed!
Mockolate · 16/02/2021 01:48

If she got a text from her GP, how the heck is she jumping the queue?!
She's been asked for one!
I don't get all this "they're jumping the queue" moaning I keep seeing, I mean surely the more people that's being vaccinated the better, right?!
How does whinging "where's mine. I'm first!" help anyone

Rainbows89 · 16/02/2021 02:07

She might have a health condition that you don’t know about.

Anyway if she is a supermarket worker then she should get it ASAP.

Ikeatears · 16/02/2021 03:03

I've got mine on Wednesday. I'm 43 and type 2 diabetic. No one except my husband knows I'm type 2 because I'm embarrassed that I've done this to myself! I also have long standing mental health issues and some of the serious psychiatric medications caused huge weight gain which led to the type 2. Not an excuse but a reason.
My point is, I haven't told anyone I'm having the vaccine because some will query why and if I'm queue jumping. I don't want, or need, to have that conversation with anyone except my husband and my hcp.

This.

Short notice makes me thing the surgery has doses and is seeking patients so they're not wasted. That's bound to happen to some doctors due to poor takeup, no-shows, and even mistaken orders and deliveries.

DM is in her 50s and got her first dose last week. Various health issues but I don't know if any are considered priority.

"Jumping the queue" would be someone actively using connections, pulling strings, or lying in order to get vaccinated out of turn. Not somebody who gets offered the vaccination by their doctor.

JackieWeaverTheEnforcer · 16/02/2021 07:25

There are reports of maybe 1 in 6 not turning up to get their vaccine, or refusing the vaccine. That stock has a very limited shelf life. Why the hell would doctors NOT offer it to existing patients on their books? The more people vaccinated the better, why is that hard to understand?. And the fact that she is a supermarket worker... Surely that alone qualifies her to come before many in any case? Jumping the queue?? Hmm

She’s been offered it so she isn’t queue jumping
We should all have one as soon as we can

LegoPirateMonkey · 16/02/2021 07:33

I have wondered if this will happen to me as my surgery has an out of date bmi for me and I have lost a lot of weight since the pandemic began. If it does, I’ll ring up and say this and find out what they say but if it’s impossible to get through, I think it’s sensible to take the vaccine - queue jumping isn’t really a problem. The more people jabbed the better for all of us. Vaccination is about community, not the individual. Every dose in every arm (no matter how ‘deserving’) benefit every one of us.

DisgruntledPelican · 16/02/2021 07:35

How can vaccinating someone be a bad thing? Hmm

KihoBebiluPute · 16/02/2021 07:45

I might end up in this situation too as last time my GP weighed me I had a bmi over 40 (it's now about 27.5). It's good to see the prevailing position of replies is not to generate extra admin by fussing about turn order- that's my opinion too but I did worry I might be being selfish too. But my view is that the logistical exercise of getting tens of millions of people vaccinated in a short time is mind-boggling and just doing what we are told as quickly as possible is probably the most helpful thing some of us can do.

AlternativePerspective · 16/02/2021 07:45

She’s been offered an appointment. How is that queue jumping? Or do you think that someone who is vulnerable will have been excluded so that someone who is perfectly healthy can have the vaccine? if she has a high BMI she will be in group6 anyway.

I had my vaccine last week. The hospital who I am under actually called me to ask if I wanted to go there to get it. I had to travel 15 miles for the privilege but whatever it takes. One of the volunteers in the recovery area was telling me that at the end of the day if they have doses left then they go into the hospital and find e.g. staff members who wouldn’t be considered front line but who might be happy to take up a spare dose because otherwise it would go to waste.

At the end of the day we’re all going to have the vaccine. The fact she’s had it now means that’s one less they have to give out later.

madmara · 16/02/2021 07:46

It is not jumping the queue if offered by the GP.

Honestly if people get this ridiculous about the "rules" to the point that they don't trust the GP clinics to administer the rollout, there is a real chance of vaccines being wasted because people are afraid of what the nosy neighbours will think!

AlternativePerspective · 16/02/2021 07:46

It’s also worth bearing in mind that if someone turns down an appointment because they don’t think they should be eligible yet, they will go into the statistic of people who “haven’t taken up the vaccine.”
