Is she jumping the vaccine queue?

Fullofpudding · 16/02/2021 01:15

My DSil got a text from her GP offering her a covid vaccine which she has booked for tomorrow. She's only 45 and she reckons she's been added to the list because of her high BMI. She's lost loads of weight since her GP last saw her so now has a normal BMI. I can't help thinking she's now jumping the queue but she can't get hold of her GP when she tried to query it. Just wondered what other MN thought Confused

I think no matter how carefully they try and prioritise who gets the vaccination they are never going to be able to make it so everyone is vaccinated in the exact order of risk. I think if you are offered it you should take it.

Greenmarmalade · 16/02/2021 09:27

Op- your work has kept us all fed and I am very thankful for all supermarket workers. I would never begrudge ANYONE the vaccine, but you are a key worker working in close proximity to many people all day, so you should absolutely have it ASAP.

tara66 · 16/02/2021 09:29

No, also working in supermarket is very exposed indeed.

Pixxie7 · 16/02/2021 09:36

The most vulnerable groups have received their first vaccination so does it really matter?

KizzyKat91 · 16/02/2021 09:38

I volunteer in a mass vaccination centre and you’d be surprised by the number of leftover doses and unbooked appointment slots. We’ve been offering appointments to various, easily contactable, groups of local people to ensure we’re working at full capacity, otherwise we’d be standing idle a lot of the time.

It’s worth bearing in mind, that the quicker we get through the doses, the quicker we’ll be sent more. At one point, we were targeted to vaccinate 1000 people per day, but due to low uptake of appointments, this got downgraded to between 500-600 and our opening hours have just been reduced. I wish we could have dragged people in off the street instead of having to look like we’re sticking to the priority groups!

Silenceisgolden20 · 16/02/2021 09:40

Oh my God I'm so sick of this.
So many judgemental threads about people have vaccines.
There was one a few weeks back about how someone was 'killing other people' because they were using up a spare that was going to go in the bin.
Ffs, you're not a doctor.

BIWI · 16/02/2021 09:40

I'm in group 7, as is my DH. But we've both been invited to have ours (I had mine on Saturday, DH has his tomorrow). That's because our local GP practice has been doing a fantastic job of working through their patients.

Surely, at the end of the day, it's better for us all to get vaccinated? No need to worry about queue jumping.

(Well done on your weight loss, btw!)

ConquestEmpireHungerPlague · 16/02/2021 09:41

@Fullofpudding Obesity affects immune function, hence the inclusion in group 6. Even if you've lost a lot of weight (well done!) that doesn't reverse overnight, so you're probably still at elevated risk for some time. Don't feel guilty, especially given your exposure risk.

PurpleFlower1983 · 16/02/2021 09:42

Our local surgery is calling loads of people. All ages, no underlying conditions - it’s really strange!

theThreeofWeevils · 16/02/2021 09:43

Who cares every extra vaccine saves 25 new cases
... from the Department of Made-up Statistics.

christinarossetti19 · 16/02/2021 09:44

I received a text inviting me to book a vaccine too.

I'm in my 50s with no health problems that put me in a higher risk group.

Although I sort of feel that they should give the dose to someone more vulnerable, the more people who are vaccinated the better for everyone, so I've booked an apt.

Timeforredwine · 16/02/2021 09:45

You can be called for group 6 " at risk" category even if you dodnt know you were in a group such as this and even if you no longer have the medical condition or require medication, could be 30 years ago, it just flags up to show as they cant go through everyones medical records with a fine tooth comb so for instance if you ever in your entire life had a medicine or condition for even a few weeks that named thing will flag up and you will be called.

Regularsizedrudy · 16/02/2021 09:46

Who cares?

pointythings · 16/02/2021 09:49

Your DSis' GP may not know about her drastic weight loss. But she should absolutely go, so far the NHS has done a fabulous job keeping vaccine wastage very low and that needs to continue.

Confusedandshaken · 16/02/2021 09:50

The time involved in contacting her doctor to give him her new weight, alter her records and relist her in the correct category is unnecessary hassle the NHS doesn't need right now.
It's a mistake but in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter. One more person vaccinated, even if it's a couple of months earlier than expected, is a step towards freedom for all of us.

15 million down, only 52 million to go!!

thisplaceisweird · 16/02/2021 09:53

Jesus Christ let her have it.. what is happening to people? This comes across so grabby and snide, the more people vaccinated, the better. We are a community of people whether it's your family, your town or the world, support others around you and you'll be happier in your own life, I promise you.

Aaaaaah · 16/02/2021 09:53

I'm very pleased you have been offered it and congratulations on your weight loss

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/02/2021 09:55

At this point jabs in arms are all that matters.

SeaShoreGalore · 16/02/2021 09:55

I reckon the admin and time lost to investigate any incorrectly invited people would be counter productive

This ^

redcarbluecar · 16/02/2021 09:56

She's been invited, and we've all been asked to have it so, assuming she wants it, she should go. We don't need another thing to turn on each other about.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 16/02/2021 09:57

This. Again. Pointy elbows at the ready ...

SomersetHamlyn · 16/02/2021 09:58

@KihoBebiluPute

I might end up in this situation too as last time my GP weighed me I had a bmi over 40 (it's now about 27.5). It's good to see the prevailing position of replies is not to generate extra admin by fussing about turn order- that's my opinion too but I did worry I might be being selfish too. But my view is that the logistical exercise of getting tens of millions of people vaccinated in a short time is mind-boggling and just doing what we are told as quickly as possible is probably the most helpful thing some of us can do.

Agree. Well done on your weight loss.
By losing that weight you (and the OP's relative) have already helped the NHS and others who may need hospitalisation if they catch covid, by making it far less likely that you would become seriously ill yourself.

truthisalie · 16/02/2021 09:59

She works in a supermarket. That's hundreds people a day.

needadvice54321 · 16/02/2021 10:00

@snowblower

Does it matter?. The more people we can get vaccinated the better.
Exactly this

I spoke to my GP yesterday. I'm asthmatic and have a high BMI, neither I thought were high enough to get the vaccine, but having two underlying conditions worried me, esp as a Nursery worker. It turns out I'd already been put in group 6 - I questioned how, her response -

It doesn't matter, you've been put in that group so you have the vaccination if you want it. The more people we get vaccinated, the better

Hepsie · 16/02/2021 10:01

Goodness, just take it op. You work in a supermarket, you've been offered it, everyone will get their turn and you'll probably create more problems for yourself by trying to cancel it.
