Is she jumping the vaccine queue?

My DSil got a text from her GP offering her a covid vaccine which she has booked for tomorrow. She's only 45 and she reckons she's been added to the list because of her high BMI. She's lost loads of weight since her GP last saw her so now has a normal BMI. I can't help thinking she's now jumping the queue but she can't get hold of her GP when she tried to query it. Just wondered what other MN thought Confused

There isn’t a “queue”. Everyone will be offered a jab in time. There’s an order of priority based on assessed presumption of risk. That’s not a queue. If you’ve been invited, don’t waste GP time querying it, step up and do the right thing.

Notnownotneverever · 16/02/2021 10:04

It really doesn’t matter. There are spare vaccines in a lot of sessions so let’s just get those that need and want to be vaccinated done. Don’t slow it down by cancelling and rebooking.

Firstly,
@LegoPirateMonkey
@KihoBebiluPute
@AtlasPine
@Fullofpudding
Star Bloody well done all of you. Losing a lot of weight is flipping hard, you have done brilliantly.

Secondly when my Bmi went from 50+ to 22 I was still getting recalled for NHS Flu Jabs by text and phone messages from the GP practice. I was no longer entitled to a free one, so I'd had a private one.

To get me off the recall list took 4 phone calls to gp reception , an appointment with the nurse at the surgery with the nurse weighing me to check my self reported weight was correct Hmm then a telephone appointment with the GP to check I hadn't forgotten about something else like Asthma which would mean I should still be on the list Confused followed by three more telephone calls to the GP practice, the final one to the practice manager by which point I was thoroughly fed up.

This was 2 years before the pandemic. I can not imagine this would be a useful exercise at the moment.

I astonished that people get worked up about this sort of thing. Who cares? In Israel they make a big thing about the pizza delivery guy who got a jab because there was one dose left over, and they're proud of it. Here we seems to be obsessed with worry about queue jumping....

zigaziga · 16/02/2021 10:09

In theory I’d hate to have the vaccine ahead of someone who actually could do with it but in practice I’ll just take it whenever anyone asks me too as I think querying it would just not be time well spent for the GP surgery. If they had questions about who was what number in the queue for every vaccine they have to administer this whole thing will take months longer.

Restawhile · 16/02/2021 10:09

I know I read the post. But my goodness coronavirus has brought out the worst in so many people.

Cannot believe the unpleasant reactions about others getting the vaccine. Of course I want it myself , and yes there is the chance I could get Covid and be really poorly or worse before I get the vaccine. But I am not prepared to be so angry about what everyone else is getting before me.

Its a Mumsnet thing, I dont know anyone in real life who worries about this .

sydenhamhiller · 16/02/2021 10:11

@Mockolate

If she got a text from her GP, how the heck is she jumping the queue?! She's been asked for one! I don't get all this "they're jumping the queue" moaning I keep seeing, I mean surely the more people that's being vaccinated the better, right?! How does whinging "where's mine. I'm first!" help anyone
This this this!
AnnLouiseB · 16/02/2021 10:13

No. The queue is not determined by individuals assessing their own circumstances. If she has been offered it she isn’t jumping the queue.

As this thread clearly demonstrates, most people are happy for this woman to get the jab and aren't at all worked up about it. There's just a few people who can't resist being noisily envious or snide - if it wasn't covid it'd be something else, I'm sure.
profpoopsnagle · 16/02/2021 10:14

Just wondered what other MN thought

I think it's great that one more person will have a greater chance of being directly protected, and many, many more people will have a greater chance of being indirectly greater protected. Each vaccine protects not just one, but a community.

landofgiants · 16/02/2021 10:15

In your shoes I would take it!

I am the same age as you, in a customer facing role and whilst not particularly overweight, I have asthma and seem to be prone to pneumonia. While the risk of severe illness to healthy adults of our age is not huge, it definitely exists.

I'd be tempted not to discuss it much in real life, as some folk are pretty upset about their place in the queue!

MustStopSnacking28 · 16/02/2021 10:16

Agree with PPs, it's better for all of us if everyone gets it as soon as they are offered. I am glad that's one less going to waste, our neighbour works in a GP surgery and they threw away 35 at the end of the day the other day as people didn't turn up!

Gilly12345 · 16/02/2021 10:19

If she has been offered the vaccine then I don’t see the problem, I’m sure when you get offered it you will get it.

Why can’t you just be happy for her? The sooner we all get vaccinated the sooner life may improve.

Are you normally a resentful person?

veryverydrunk · 16/02/2021 10:20

they threw away 35 at the end of the day the other day as people didn't turn up!

God I really hope this is not happening all over the country, I could literally cry reading that. People all over the world are desperate for these vaccines! They should be ringing round, putting messages on Facebook,etc, even asking passersby to use these vaccines up. Throwing them away! Sad

DoubleTweenQueen · 16/02/2021 10:22

The health service is putting in massive effort to roll out the vaccines to the entire population. They are trying to optimise coverage as best they can, due to need based on health records. Some centres are only seeing 10-30% of their capacity. It makes more sense to just book and go as soon as you're invited rather than delay.

rosierose10 · 16/02/2021 10:23

Honestly it really doesn't matter, you should mind your own business. The more people having it the better. It didn't take long for the vaccine police to pipe up. Find something else to concentrate on.

zigaziga · 16/02/2021 10:30

It’s a horribly vocal minority though.

I see it on Twitter a lot. A young-ish person will post a photo of them getting the vaccine with a generic “thank you NHS” message and suddenly you get the “whilst I’m happy for you I can’t help but wonder why YOU got the vaccine today and I, at 72, at still waiting” and the vaccinated person will then have to publicly divulge their medical condition. I find it deeply uncomfortable to be honest and I kind of don’t know why people care .. at the rate the vaccinations are being done if you think you need one you’ll probably get one in the next few weeks anyway.

One of my friends, a perfectly healthy kid 30 something just put on her Facebook a “COVID vaccinated” banner (she is a carer) and I just winced seeing it because I KNOW sadly what comments she’ll be getting.

PeggyHill · 16/02/2021 10:34

Oh for God's sake, who gives a shit. Just have your vaccine and be done with it.

What a ridiculous thread.

RandomUsernameHere · 16/02/2021 10:36

Maybe she has another health condition that you're not aware of. It's not anyone else's business anyway.

MustStopSnacking28 · 16/02/2021 10:37

@veryverydrunk I know it's terrible, I would have been straight there if offered! Give them out in the street!

SomersetHamlyn · 16/02/2021 10:41

I think people like your SIL are, if anything, even more 'deserving' because they have made a huge effort to improve their own health, minimise their risk and reduce the pressure on the NHS.

nancywhitehead · 16/02/2021 10:42

Why does it matter? We need as many people vaccinated as possible, if she was offered it then fine

Sunnydayhere · 16/02/2021 10:43

She was invited.

There are different queues, some merging, some separate. Some moving at different speeds. Some different in different areas.

Some blending of the criteria.

I got my jab at 63. Excess capacity in local area and the jabbers were twiddling their thumbs.

In a neighbouring area not all the over 70s have had theirs.

Its not just one queue.

We’ll all get the opportunity.

doireallyneedaname · 16/02/2021 10:45

Yes she is jumping the queue because she’s no longer got a BMI over 40. She should notify her GP, but if she can’t then she may as well have it.
