AZ - EU dispute 2

Unsure if this will work!

Hand on heart would you all be happy with that? seriously? i'd bet my house again, they'd be howls of protest and demands

Very unhappy but I think the ire would be directed at the government & BoJo. Our lack of PPE wasn't blamed on other countries stopping exporting. We were slow.

Apparently, Modena are now also going to be delivering less doses - again, due to production glitches in Belgium.

Will be interesting to see the EC reaction to that! Somehow, I don’t think there will be one.

Dinnafashyersel · 30/01/2021 12:25

I’m guessing that a lot of this sabre rattling is to force the UK to do something. The suspect from our standpoint this was a contractual issue between AZ and EU. When dealing with AZ wasn’t yielding results they decided to make it a political issue in the hope they could force us to step in and have an opinion.

Agree with this.

Alex Deane had me laughing this morning but also a great defence of putting a perceived non detail orientated buffoon with personality in charge.

"It’s another e.g. of EU having people in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now, if Juncker was in post & said, “sorry lads, went on a massive bender last night, pressed all the buttons in EC HQ to see what lights up, no harm no foul, didn’t mean it” - THAT would be credible."

Baileysforchristmas · 30/01/2021 12:30

I knew about delays to France and Italy. But seems its delays to all countries with orders that includes Canada/UK and Israel. We haven't authorised moderna yet in UK and it wasent scheduled to arrive until March . However if Europe 160million order is delayed and so is Oxford AZ I can fully see them seizing phizer as their own. Not sure when Johnson and Johnson available delivery its made in Switzerland but due to be bottled In Spain and the Spanish minister on newsnight said Spain supports the eu to ensure they are put 1st.

Should transits of vaccines and active substances toward third countries be abused to circumvent the effects of the authorisation system, the EU will consider using all the instruments at its disposal

This is an interesting vignette. The Pfizer vaccine delivery system is made in the UK and exported to Belgium. Is this an extra threat to keep UK from implementing export controls the other way? So, we can do what we want, but will penalise you for attempting to do the same?

CrotchBurn · 30/01/2021 12:38

What are the EUs "instruments"?

Honestly its behaving like the mafia now. Or some post Soviet state.

Where are the fluid borders and internationalist outlook?

CrotchBurn · 30/01/2021 12:40

By the way on one of these threads someone posted a graph showing US UK and EU investment into vaccine research and development. Does anyone have it? I cant find it!

Theworldsgonemad · 30/01/2021 12:43

AZ have a way out of EU dispute if they choose to use it.
EU have made a huge error with this redaction fail which technically makes the contract null and void
www.theregister.com/2021/01/29/eu_commission_vaccine_contract_redaction_fail/

justanotherneighinparadise · 30/01/2021 12:44

The EUs ‘instruments’ will no doubt be once again closing the borders to essential travel and trying to starve us in order to demand our acquiescence.

Makes me laugh when people ponder how WWs were able to come about.

justanotherneighinparadise · 30/01/2021 12:46

If we’ve got any sense our politicians should just keep our mouths shut and let them hang themselves with their own rope. They are doing an excellent job currently and looking very fucking dangerous.

I doubt we will only withhold the starter in retaliation for non delivery of the vaccine. I have to say from outside looking in involving 2 or 3 countries seems awfully complex time consuming and expensive. Clearly we had the manufacturering capacity and capability because by end of 2021 we will be producing az at 2 different UK factories.
Valneva in Scotland Norovax in teeside

So far what we know is they have small amount phizer backstock.
8million az been offered immediately
Moderna and phizer reduced amounts again in Feb or March.
They need another vaccine with immediate stock.

The issue with eu vaccine scheme is distribution is based in size not need.
Portugal really needs it right how.
Every member state has slight different situation.
Not sure if vaccine priority list is top down or upto each state.

CrotchBurn · 30/01/2021 12:48

@Theworldsgonemad

Oooh! What do you think the chances of them doing that are?

BigWoollyJumpers · 30/01/2021 12:51

DH just pointed out, how the map of export controls, first thread, pretty much matches one from 1941, how bloody ridiculous is that?

MarshaBradyo · 30/01/2021 12:54

Absolutely and the best thing to do is give it very little attention

3asAbird · 30/01/2021 12:54

Is there not massive issue with confidentiality if eu can go to factories rifle thorough countrys private orders and decide if that country worthy of getting the vaccines they ordered?

They already shutting some borders think news said France and Germany tightening borders control.

rslsys · 30/01/2021 12:54

For those doing the sums and saying the UK has committed to many more doses than there are people in the UK. We don't yet know what the effective 'life' of the vaccine antibodies will be.
We may yet have to start another round of vaccinations in the UK in the autumn.

Frouby · 30/01/2021 12:55

Posting for a placemark. This is all absolutely fascinating. I (grudgingly) voted remain, but accepted the result and was pleased to see things eventually progress. The EU have made themselves look a right bunch of knobbers. They didn't want to invest in the summer, didn't want to pay to have these factories and companies to be able to invest in their production and now want to piggy back on other countries commitments.

If I was an AstraZ gaffer I'd be like 'get Bojo on the phone, we need some big fuck off industrial units and some big fuck off trucks, we're packing the whole thing up from Belgium and moving it to the UK and fuck the EU'.

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 12:57

It's completely logical to overorder.

And that is why we are now perceived to be very very dangerous.

www.vmicuk.com

For those who haven't seen this on other threads.

Another "not for profit" vaccination research and manufacturing site. We are indeed, very good at this.

CrotchBurn · 30/01/2021 13:00

@Frouby

Yeah why dont they just do that? Declare the contract null and then ship out

picklemewalnuts · 30/01/2021 13:03

Right. Found you. Now to catch up on what I've missed.

Pinkcanoftan · 30/01/2021 13:03

Then to distribute the excess to the Commonwealth countries?

Don't give Bojo any ideas hes great at exploiting weakness and trying appear strong can just imagine Boris saying to gove and Hancock get the army in now. If we can build nightingale hospitals at speed and pull off the Olympics. then we can build vaccines factories and bottling plants. They can then offer young people amazing pharmaceutical apprenticeship to keep the unemployment figures down.
