Why are we not going into full lockdown again?

Im finding it difficult to understand. I work in a preschool and have a child in YR1.
Personally I think we need to go into lockdown like march but why are we not?
I guess the cost. Why are Boot, the range and shops like that still open, there is no need!

Because lockdowns are not working as it already shows by the rising numbers. The economy needs some places to stay open. Not everything can close.

Also boots sell medications/prescriptions so should be open. The range has food in it I know at least 2 that have Iceland’s inside. B and M etc sell tinned food and medication such as paracetamol which is needed. Not everyone can get to a supermarket or afford supermarket prices the range/B&M are usually cheaper.

Orichette · 28/12/2020 21:25

I think we probably will, very soon.

Or Tier 5 or whatever they’ll call it...

EagleFlight · 28/12/2020 21:26

I think we will and it will be announced on Wednesday.

sproutsandparsnips · 28/12/2020 21:27

We pretty much are in Wales at the moment. If schools reopen that will be the main difference.

mouldygrapes · 28/12/2020 21:27

What’s your evidence for lockdowns not working?

The numbers fell to very low levels after the March lockdown, but we squandered the gains by not testing travellers, test and trace being crap and encouraging things like eat out to help out.
The Nov lockdown had a modest effect but was too short and restrictions lifted too fast, plus this new variant thrown into the mix which is much more transmissible.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 28/12/2020 21:28

Boots is an essential shop

Shitfuckoh · 28/12/2020 21:28

We need the economy to keep going & non essential shops open where they can, is one way to help the economy 'recover'.

However, IMO we should be in a 'full lockdown' with schools closed to all apart from those that need to be there.

Beconase20 · 28/12/2020 21:29

Lockdown will only work if everything closes including schools.

Katie517 · 28/12/2020 21:41

People aren’t catching it in Boots (essential shop and pharmacy FFS!) the Range (sells food and other essentials) B&M (same as the range) they are open because they can be and we need at least some of the economy open, people need to be in work and not sitting at home on furlough. The issue and elephant in the room is schools but they won’t admit it. Cases remained low throughout summer as hairdressers, gyms, pubs, holiday accommodation etc. reopened they skyrocketed in September with schools and unis but still you lockdown lovers want to close even the small amounts of our economy that are still open!! Lockdowns come with an economic, societal and mental health cost and there has to be a balance it’s not all about covid. Hospitals are more full now than at the peak because the peak was in April (not flu season) and now it’s December (flu season and COVID on top of it!).

Indecisive12 · 28/12/2020 21:42

Because numbers are not rising in all areas?

Willbob · 28/12/2020 21:45

I think they'll have to put us into a lockdown but I wonder if this will coincide with end of the transition so that lockdown will occupy most of the main news outlets rather than problems with paperwork, licences boarders, goods etc it also means that if more shops are closed the effect on the retail side of things can be pushed back a little. Delays can be blamed on lockdown rather than Brexit.

Randomrebel · 28/12/2020 21:45

So many people think the guidance doesn’t apply to them and will either bend the guidance to justify what they are doing ignore it or claim they can’t keep up with it so didn’t realise.

I was talking to a relation on the phone tonight and her adult son had said to her ‘...mother...their are more flaming bubbles on this estate than a jacuzzi!’

I think we may go into a lockdown and it will be announced before NYE but they will call it something different like tier 5 or tier 6 or something rather than lockdown.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 28/12/2020 21:48

Because numbers are not rising in all areas?*

Cases are now rising in 90% of local authorities. Even areas in the North which were coming down are now going back up.

covetingthepreciousthings · 28/12/2020 21:49

I think we will judging by all the news reports.

Santaisreel · 28/12/2020 21:51

Because lockdowns are not working

Lockdown, actual lockdown did work. Opening things up, encouraging people to go out and changing the goalposts every ten minutes is what hasn't worked. People are not respecting the individual boundaries out in place because they are so fed up of ever changing guidelines.

AKissAndASmile · 28/12/2020 21:54

There are rumours of tier 5 being 8pm curfew and no going outside for exercise. I'm guessing schools shut too.

Elephant4 · 28/12/2020 21:55

There is no way in the world that I would stop going out for exercise.

Enough is enough.

EagleFlight · 28/12/2020 21:57

Lockdowns are the only proven thing that does work. The lockdown has to be restrictive enough though and people have to adhere to it.
SilverGlitterBaubles · 28/12/2020 21:57

People are no longer fearful, in fact many are sceptical that the virus is actually any more than flu. The government had people's good Will in March/ April and squandered it with false promises of 'world beating' track and trace and the sham that was Cummings trip to Durham. Locking people up while still allowing flights in and out and unchecked quarantine is just a joke. People have made it a national pass time to find loopholes in rules and guidance. There's no collective responsibility or sense of community. We are our own worst enemy.

Fedup21 · 28/12/2020 21:59

Because Boris Johnson and our government are incompetent.

No doubt we will continue with this pathetic situation where they are too scared to shut schools for a few weeks to get the numbers down, whilst the NHS crack on with the vaccines, but in the meantime businesses which are far safer than schools are forced to close.

I hope history holds them to account.

user763909 · 28/12/2020 22:02

Boots are an essential shop, more people would die from not receiving medication than Covid!!

StylishMummy · 28/12/2020 22:06

Because we can't keep fucking sacrificing the many many lives impacted by a lockdown for the very very few who'll die of this illness. It's a ridiculous state of affairs to be crowing for a lockdown when there are millions of families who can't afford one!

herecomesthsun · 28/12/2020 22:08

Why are we not going into full lockdown again?

Fuck knows.

Maybe people fantasise that if we shut our eyes it will all magically go away?

yeOldeTrout · 28/12/2020 22:09

Anyone else wondering when ration cards will be introduced?
Meaning you can't obtain anything from any shop without the right ration card, and those items will be limited to only certain 'essentials'. This will cut down on shop trips a huge amount since only a few shops will take the ration cards & after you run out of ration cards, then you just have to make do with what you already have.

Presumably online shops will all have to shut down -- I mean, those ordered items are mostly non-essentials and shouldn't have all those delivery people spreading germs by touching stuff etc.

Dogs- we should just eat them. That will solve the welfare problem of not being able to take them for walks. Cats, too. Most pets are edible when you think about it, really. Pet food can't possibly be an essential, can it.

Neron · 28/12/2020 22:10

Well said. The inability of people to see this is shocking.
