Why are we not going into full lockdown again?

Im finding it difficult to understand. I work in a preschool and have a child in YR1.
Personally I think we need to go into lockdown like march but why are we not?
I guess the cost. Why are Boot, the range and shops like that still open, there is no need!

Because ICU bed occupancy in hospitals across England is actually numerically lower, in most of the country, than it was on average in December 2019? (Higher ICU bed occupancy than this time last year in in London, East of England, and South East; lower in Midlands, North East and Yorkshire, North West, and South West).

Because in every single region in England, the percentage of ICU beds occupied is lower than it was this time last year? (London bed occupancy 20 Dec 2020 86.3% occupancy; average for December 2019, 88.7% occupancy.)

Because according to the Zoe App graph up to 27 December newly sick (symptomatic) cases in London as a whole are now falling after a steep increase earlier in December?

Or, maybe the announcement of the coming 77 year lockdown and the dog eating still has to be made?

OxfordwillsaveusbyFebruary · 28/12/2020 22:35

Tier 4 London and our local boots has the same system it did in March. Only 6 people in the shop at a time. Line up outside. Once inside you have access to all areas and can help yourself.

Ours (large town centre) didn't have any controls.
Never had more than a handful of people in. No queues except at the pharmacy part inside.
They were doing vaccinations etc as usual.
I went almost daily on my way to the soup kitchen next door to buy hand sanitiser for them as that was limited to 3 per person.

IndecentFeminist · 28/12/2020 22:35

I never saw any of that during the initial lockdown? Boots, Range, all supermarkets were as normal bar queues.

FoolsAssassin · 28/12/2020 22:35

‘Plus the schools sing some sort of magical safe haven. Other countries must be looking at us in shock at how wrong we could possibly cope with it all. We ignored the warnings back in March then it became a jolly boys outing for Boris and his chums’

Was having a Christmas catchup with friend from Finland and trying to explain about school situation. He told his Mum who is a Doctor and she said children are one of the biggest spreaders. I replied that I knew that as do many people but the Government had spent weeks saying they weren’t.

He replied ‘but that is insane’. I thought it summed it up pretty well and how it must look to them.

poppingpotatoes · 28/12/2020 22:35

@AKissAndASmile

There are rumours of tier 5 being 8pm curfew and no going outside for exercise. I'm guessing schools shut too.
Do you have a source for that?
Thewiseoneincognito · 28/12/2020 22:36

People need to be severely punished for rule breaking. Once that happens and the vast majority are compliant we should see a better result.

Until this happens we will be doing the Lockdown Hokey Cokey for the foreseeable.

Ilovenewyear · 28/12/2020 22:37

Thank Dominic Cummings for why a lockdown won’t work.

DfEisashambles · 28/12/2020 22:38

Tiers don’t work whatsoever especially with new strains. Lockdown until progress has been made with vaccinations.

Northernstar1245 · 28/12/2020 22:38

Because about three (Tory) rural constituencies have lower rates than everywhere else and it wouldn’t be fair on them.

Schools stayed open in my area which has had the tightest restrictions in England. We still got our numbers down - all that for nothing now with this new strain. It’s going in reverse quickly.

Billie18 · 28/12/2020 22:40

Nothing to stop people locking themselves down if that's what they want to do. Maybe it would be a good thing? Those that want to stay nice and safe inside could isolate and leave everyone else free to risk living a full life.

Justgivemewine · 28/12/2020 22:41

Because there are more things in life to worry about than covid,
People are missing out on essential medical treatment for stuff unrelated to covid.
People are losing jobs, livelihoods, homes.
People are suicidal because of this,

But of course nothing else counts because covid rules over everything🙄 and nothing else matters.

And yes I’m vulnerable to covid before everyone jumps on me with ‘oh it must be nice to feel safe and healthy bollocks’

Dons hard hat and waits to be called a covid denier. 🙄

Oh gosh yes. If only those clamoring for the nation to be locked down - would just lock themselves up instead and leave the rest of us to some peace and quiet.

I'm so bored with people like you wishing for the impossible - why do you do it? It's pointless.
nocoolnamesleft · 28/12/2020 22:43

We have only had one lockdown. The farce towards the end of the year was by no stretch of the imagination a lockdown. The tier system is not remotely a lockdown. They should have fucking done a proper lockdown weeks ago. It was obvious weeks ago that any relaxation for Christmas was the height of insanity. To keep essential services going (not just hospitals) we desperately need a lockdown.

Lazypuppy · 28/12/2020 22:43

Because the first 2 lockdowns were such successes we should do another...oh wait...

This is bullshit on two levels-
  1. Governance is most effective by consent - ‘cracking down hard’ didn’t stamp out drugs and it won’t stop people breaking pandemic rules. In fact you risk further revolt and civil unrest if you try.
  1. Even if there was the scientific and political will for this our badly underfunded police force just doesn’t have anything like the resources to make it happen. They could probably manage it in about a third of the country but there would be nobody at all sorting out the looting in the rest of the country.
Nicknacky · 28/12/2020 22:45

@Thewiseoneincognito Who do you expect to be doing the punishment?

slashlover · 28/12/2020 22:49

Anyone blaming Cummings NINE MONTHS later was never going to comply anyway. His name is like a bingo on these threads.
Posturesorposes · 28/12/2020 22:49

Hi OP!

Aha! So full lockdown will surely close your pre-school (those kids can’t be taught remotely so you’ll have no work to do) - and thus..... bazinga.... you can look after and do bakey bakey crafty time with your DC at home right? Fuck the others. Fuck the lot. I’m alright Jack.

Tell that to all the teachers dropping like flies because they're in an environment totally without protection from all your covidy kids. Nothing stopping them locking down is there?

SonjaMorgan · 28/12/2020 22:49

People have had enough and do not trust the government. Compliance will only go down the longer this goes on.

What severe punishment could be dished out to rule breakers?

I know. Why not imprison them? Even better why not imprison them AND isolate them?

Oh wait a minute...

Does this take into account the vastly increased makeshift capacity? Are you looking at actual numbers or just percentages? Many hospitals have increased capacity by 3-4 times by reducing staff ratios, using medical and nursing students, using staff from other areas and converting other areas of the hospital
