Why are we not going into full lockdown again?

Im finding it difficult to understand. I work in a preschool and have a child in YR1.
Personally I think we need to go into lockdown like march but why are we not?
I guess the cost. Why are Boot, the range and shops like that still open, there is no need!

Pharmacists and pharmacy staff are at risk as HCP. They are more likely to get it occupationally than from family due to the nature of their contact with a clientele who are often unwell and the number of those contact every day. Statistically they’re much more at risk than a non HCP, but that’s just the job and it’s an essential service, same as hospitals and GPs etc. Of course boots should be open. Not just the medicine but nappies, baby milk, bottles, gluten free foods, tampax. Huge number of other essential items in there, no country has shut pharmacies that would be crazy!

MrsBlue4 · 29/12/2020 00:05

@PrincessNutNuts

There is going to be another lockdown. It may be announced on Wednesday. They may wait a few weeks until a thousand British people are dying every day. They might not call it Lockdown. They may call it Tier 5

But it must happen because once you've let the virus spread to this extent there are no other options left.

Have none of you looked at the graph of cases in your local area?

Because in three weeks that stupendous rise in cases will lead to a stupendous rise in deaths.

Or maybe there are thousands of incorrect positive test results...

BungleandGeorge · 29/12/2020 00:10

If it’s just sue to increased testing why have hospital admissions shot up?

SnowyZoey · 29/12/2020 00:12

You think Boots isn’t essential?

You do realise they’re a pharmacy where people go to get medicine? Good grief.

Hospitals are always at their busiest this time of year. Maybe the government in preparation for this winter could have put provisions in place for this rather than paying people 80% of their wages to lock themselves in their own homes...
BungleandGeorge · 29/12/2020 00:35

@MrsBlue4, this isn’t usually the busiest time of year because flu season is not in full swing until later on. Have you seen the admissions numbers for the last couple of weeks? Bed occupancy is approaching the peak in April, that’s not because the tests are wrong or people are getting tested more often, it’s because the number of infections is out of control in some areas

PrincessNutNuts · 29/12/2020 00:43

There are now more patients in hospital with covid in England than there ever were in the spring.

Why are we not going into full lockdown again?

There’s someone elsewhere arguing supermarkets should be closed, do nothing surprises me any longer,
herecomesthsun · 29/12/2020 05:28

@MrsBlue4

1 PCR tests are more likely to be false negatives than false positives ie 40k would be an underestimate on that score

2 community incidence is likely to be far far higher than 40k from previous ONS (community survey) figures

As long as schools are open people tell themselves my household is mixing with X hundred others at school so what is the harm of me doing with a few more than we are supposed to. Also why not have their own bubble when a bubble of 300 is ok.

I already caught covid at work and it makes no sense to me why I should continue to give up all social life when I have no choice but to mix with a 100 people a day in a small confined space with very little ventilation none of whom wear masks

Says who?

Because my dc are in school I've pulled back in all other areas. Didn't do eat out to help out, go on holiday, go back to the gym etc. The very fact they are mixing makes me want to mix less.

likeamillpond · 29/12/2020 06:09

@Beconase20

Lockdown will only work if everything closes including schools.
It needs to be like the first one. One hour of excercise once a day and stay close to where you live Its the letting people drive far and wide that's causing problems.
likeamillpond · 29/12/2020 06:13

What struck me as crazy and irresponsible about the last lockdown was that we went from not being able to travel at all to being able to travel as far as we wanted.
It should have has a cap on it.

Pastanred · 29/12/2020 07:20

Currently we are at 40,000 cases per day

At peak estimates were that 100,000 got it per day so let’s havd some perspective

Bubblemonkey · 29/12/2020 07:24

Boots comes under chemist 🤨

Iheartmysmart · 29/12/2020 07:24

Think the one hour exercise once a day was one of the mumsnet made up rules.

Wherediditgo · 29/12/2020 07:29

@yeOldeTrout

Anyone else wondering when ration cards will be introduced? Meaning you can't obtain anything from any shop without the right ration card, and those items will be limited to only certain 'essentials'. This will cut down on shop trips a huge amount since only a few shops will take the ration cards & after you run out of ration cards, then you just have to make do with what you already have.

Presumably online shops will all have to shut down -- I mean, those ordered items are mostly non-essentials and shouldn't have all those delivery people spreading germs by touching stuff etc.

Dogs- we should just eat them. That will solve the welfare problem of not being able to take them for walks. Cats, too. Most pets are edible when you think about it, really. Pet food can't possibly be an essential, can it.

Do you know, mn has been that hysterical of late that I actually believed you were being serious for a minute Wink
Wherediditgo · 29/12/2020 07:32

The more shops you close, the more people pile in to the ones that stay open making SD almost impossible. Our local ASDA was the most crowded I had ever seen during last lockdown.

Sunflowergirl1 · 29/12/2020 07:34

@Beconase20

Lockdown worked to some degree with the original variant. However the amount of infection around would assume levels of non compliance.

This new variant is so much more infectious...but no one knows how much.

Shutting schools...who knows what the effect will be. I know from an acquaintance that at schools in our area that positive tests are generally low...but if one child in a group tests positive, what has been shocking is if the others did get tested the high level of asymptomatic positive tests.

What really does worry me is the impact of the children being out of school..in our area which is very middle class the impact is a much higher level of kids involved in drugs. I understand the impact though has been terrible on kids in deprived areas....including hunger etc from not being fed properly due to not having school meals, as well as being left alone all day etc .

Finally balanced position but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a fairly high level of immunity with kids now any so going back may be better

PrincessNutNuts · 29/12/2020 07:36

@Iheartmysmart

It was, but the government going on telly and not understanding their own rules (possibly because they didn't intend to abide by them, themselves) then making it up as they went along did give that impression.
itsgettingweird · 29/12/2020 07:46

Herecomes

Someone unthread said we should be locked down properly without being allowed out even for an hours exercise. My response was to that.
It was never an hour rules anyway. Ironically that all came from a comment Gove made when questioned what was a reasonable amount of time out exercising.

InTheLongGrass · 29/12/2020 07:51

How ill are the people in hospital?
My neighbour died from covid in the spring. We had an ambulance visit between 3 and 5 times a day for most of a week. Why wasnt he in hospital?
We had oxygen shortages in the spring too.
We went into tier 3 in October. Our numbers fell, and have been fairly static for a month.

Yes, its serious. Yes, it looks to be heading in the wrong direction. But we need to treat the country as areas, not as a whole. Right now, round here we dont need full lockdown. Other parts of the country might do.

Pootle40 · 29/12/2020 07:54

@PrincessNutNuts

What I would like to know is how many people In hospital are taking up a bed being treated for COVID v how many people are taking up a hospital bed for other reasons and happen to have COVID or caught it in hospital? Otherwise all of this is very one dimensional
AreTheySerious · 29/12/2020 07:55

@Nicknacky We could say the same for those catching it in hospitals and care homes. No, they didn’t catch it there! Must have been from someone at home. Come on. We’d can't prove the link but when we look at the facts we can make a pretty good educated guess. Also, she went on to pass it to colleagues so people are catching it in Boots. A reason for them to close? No. But perhaps reveals a need to review how they interact with the public/allow access to their stores (we obviously don’t know how many customers she passed it on to but fair to say a few, I’d imagine).

meditrina · 29/12/2020 07:56

Yes, it was in north London in April, and it was reported with considerably concern:
