Why are we not going into full lockdown again?

Im finding it difficult to understand. I work in a preschool and have a child in YR1.
Personally I think we need to go into lockdown like march but why are we not?
I guess the cost. Why are Boot, the range and shops like that still open, there is no need!

@Neron

Lockdowns come with an economic, societal and mental health cost and there has to be a balance it’s not all about covid Well said. The inability of people to see this is shocking.
Death comes with a pretty nasty mental cost for people and their loved ones too.

Because numbers are not rising in all areas?*

Cases are now rising in 90% of local authorities. Even areas in the North which were coming down are now going back up.

Nothing to do with everyone shooting out of London to beat the Christmas cut-off deadline, carriyng the new Go-Fastr Covid strain with them, obviously . . .

People need to be severely punished for rule breaking. Once that happens and the vast majority are compliant we should see a better result.

Until this happens we will be doing the Lockdown Hokey Cokey for the foreseeable.

What would you recommend as a punishment for an illegal cup of tea with a lonely parent? Maybe we should bring back hanging?
nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 28/12/2020 22:53

Tier 4 is basically lockdown. What they need to do is shut the fucking schools. That was the main difference between lockdown and lockdown lite. I don't buy that kids are low transmitters. If anything, they are the main transmitters because they don't know they have it. Kids are mostly asymptomatic or mild symptoms. They don't even realise they have it and are least likely to social distance.

yeOldeTrout · 28/12/2020 22:55

Even China can't actually clear covid.

Repeated rounds of entire town/district testing proved more effective than lockdowns ?

Atalune · 28/12/2020 22:57

Trust has gone. I don’t think the government knows what’s best for me, and I fear their advice.

ShanghaiDiva · 28/12/2020 22:59

Although China has done a much better job of managing the virus than we have.
One of the key differences being strict quarantine for anyone arriving in the country.

You know what it's like being left behind when a loved one commits suicide then?

riceuten · 28/12/2020 22:59

I remember in March, there were similar calls for a "total lockdown". Closing all borders (except, strangely, for UK citizens from abroad who were magically immune), closing down all transport, all places of work, all schools, and magically, the virus would die out. Whilst we didn't go quite that far, the return of the virus was inevitable without a test and trace infrastructure (which we paid for but never got) and a vaccine (which we now have but is months away from being implemented). So a "total lockdown" in these circumstances I feel will just kick the tin down the road.

Severely punished Hmm

Have you heard yourself

I think schools now need to close in the worst hit areas for a few weeks but you are going a bit too far.

Maybe step back and find think about what kind of a society you want to have.

MrsMomoa · 28/12/2020 23:00

StylishMummy

Because we can't keep fucking sacrificing the many many lives impacted by a lockdown for the very very few who'll die of this illness. It's a ridiculous state of affairs to be crowing for a lockdown when there are millions of families who can't afford one!

This!!

Googlebrained · 28/12/2020 23:01

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Anyone can fly into this country, from pretty much anywhere, and travel within the country to wherever they like. Untested. Unchecked. No quarantine.

Anyone in my T3 area can go for a wander round a kitchen showroom, pop into a homewares shop and a toy shop and wander freely as close as they like to anyone else.

The whole country is a fucking shitshow.

This. What's the point in us having a lockdown when people can fly in from places that haven't got a lockdown.

What's the point in having a limited lockdown in one area, when people are travelling between that area and other areas and spreading it.

What's the point in half the people following the rules carefully, while the other half call them Covid nazis and accuse them of being lockdown lovers, and just behave as if we're not in the middle of a worldwide pandemic.

I absolutely hate having my freedoms limited and my activities curtailed. But I want this thing to be over ASAP. If so many people think they are the exception, how are we ever going to stop this thing. I just feel so frustrated.

yeOldeTrout · 28/12/2020 23:01

It's really interesting those news stories about China, yes they lockdown & close the schools etc.... but they tested the entire city of 300k persons repeatedly. 6 weeks from lockdown to finding no new cases at all. It's impressive. And no doubt worked great in a totalitarian state.

Maybe loads of MNers could ask to immigrate there to get the population control they crave.

Yep
QueenPawPaws · 28/12/2020 23:02

I don't know what the answer is 🤷🏽‍♀️ everyone is fed up, I get that
Personally still shielding as much as possible until I can have the vaccine. No idea when that will be but I'm going to double check with my consultant in 2 weeks that I can have it

People not isolating, people/children with no symptoms spreading it, people shopping for something to do, people travelling from tier 4 to tier 2 for a meal out, or between counties

ShanghaiDiva · 28/12/2020 23:02

There are three basic elements to managing the pandemic: test, trace and isolate. We failed at all three.

None of us are getting out of here alive!

@Katie517

People aren’t catching it in Boots (essential shop and pharmacy FFS!) the Range (sells food and other essentials) B&M (same as the range) they are open because they can be and we need at least some of the economy open, people need to be in work and not sitting at home on furlough. The issue and elephant in the room is schools but they won’t admit it. Cases remained low throughout summer as hairdressers, gyms, pubs, holiday accommodation etc. reopened they skyrocketed in September with schools and unis but still you lockdown lovers want to close even the small amounts of our economy that are still open!! Lockdowns come with an economic, societal and mental health cost and there has to be a balance it’s not all about covid. Hospitals are more full now than at the peak because the peak was in April (not flu season) and now it’s December (flu season and COVID on top of it!).
@Katie517 completely agree with you. Took the words right out of my mouth!
ballsdeep · 28/12/2020 23:07

@sproutsandparsnips

We pretty much are in Wales at the moment. If schools reopen that will be the main difference.
Really? Not where I am.

I think it'll only make a difference and make people think seriously of the schools close.

Tootletum · 28/12/2020 23:08

Oh bore off. What is wrong with boots being open? Or exercise. I guess you're one of those who's totally fine if people get so depressed they kill themselves because hey they didn't die of coronavirus. Not all of us get off on being trapped in our houses for months.

ShanghaiDiva · 28/12/2020 23:08

Yes, China is very interesting. I lived there for 12 years and moved back this year. Effective quarantine and preventing movement between areas is one of the key differences. Anyone arriving in the country has to spend two weeks in a quarantine facility, no self isolation at home, no exceptions, no nipping to the shops, no excuses. Temp checks twice daily, covid tests at the start and end of quarantine and then you go home. However, your local area may decide to impose a 14 day home isolation period at the end of the quarantine. My dh did 14 days quarantine in China and moved back to the uk in July and completed 14 days home isolation, where no one checked he complied with the rules.
honeybooboo1394 · 28/12/2020 23:09

@Elephant4

There is no way in the world that I would stop going out for exercise.

Enough is enough.

@Elephant4 exercise was the only thing keeping me sane throughout lockdown (I work from home and have been since March time). My partner and I take part in online-line Zoom sessions with our instructor and rest of the team during tier 4 and lockdown - otherwise we're in the park (which I do miss). We have a little green outside out flats we use. I can't imagine not being allowed to do it, would be really sad for us :(
RedMarauder · 28/12/2020 23:09

Guessing preschools won't be kept open as not essential education.

They are essential for children 2+ who are vulnerable/have SEN.

MercyBooth · 28/12/2020 23:11

I was talking to a relation on the phone tonight and her adult son had said to her ‘...mother...their are more flaming bubbles on this estate than a jacuzzi

Disabled people are more likely to be poorer, so more likely to live on a housing estate, so will need more assistance, Some posters on here would get a nasty shock if all the unpaid carers quit tomorrow. NHS would collapse.

Did he have anything to say about the skiers in Verbier. Because its beginning to look like protecting the NHS is just the responsibility of those lower down the socio economic scale.

jillypill · 28/12/2020 23:12
