There will be civil unrest in Manchester following this and I don’t blame them.

People won’t follow the rules as they have no respect for the government any more. Does anyone? Incompetence bullshit and lies.

I don't know the facts around this - whether the infection rates in Manchester really are that terrifying, or access to hospital is really that restricted now.

But it does smack of Boris not liking a mere Northern mayor defying him.

Are scientists not supposed to be impartial? Never seen such a ridiculous piece of propaganda as that before Blow Job's speech. They are an absolute disgrace the lot of them. I hope Manchester revolts!!! I will be over there marching with them if they do.

I understand Burnham's position. But some Manchester hospital are already in NHS 'rationing' mode when it comes to admitting covid patients. It's going to get very grim there.

I don't live up north but I have in-laws that live in the area that's being locked down.

My question is, will you feel differently if you or a member of your family can't get a hospital bed in icu because they're full?

Really? More like Burnham will have blood on his hands. If he thinks he knows better than the Manchester ITU consultant who last week told him to shut up and shut down then God help Manchester.

This is the real problem about the shit show we're going through. Our system of government is so wonderful because it permits changes fairly easily. But the biggest issue with change is how the populace react to it. The constant changes not to guidance but to law, make it near impossible to follow (as Boris himself demonstrated). If the person pushing the law can't keep us straight, how the f are we supposed to? And moreover why would we? It's so contradictory and nonsensical that it feels like a farce.

Burnham's a fool. Manchester's numbers are terrifying.

I like Andy Burnham and feel he has a good point .However surely Boris/The Govt would not resort to Lockdown measures without good reason? Also if they pay millions to Manchester ,and other areas get locked down too then there would be an enormous bill!

I live in Manchester. I trust the scientists. Much more than than I trust that posturing populist Andy Burnham.

If Manchesters numbers are as high as they are showing it is no surprise they are being locked down futher. I think the people in Manchester would compain more if their relatives couldn't get treatment or an ICU bed

This is like a punishment beating for Greater Manchester by default. How can Johnson's medical advisors stand there and put up with this?

People are sinking. This is about mental health, other serious medical conditions, loneliness, people having just enough money (or not) to stay out of poverty and homelessness - massive public health concerns.

They keep waffling along about our local hospital being full. It's always sodding full by now. It deals with half the Peak District as well as our borough. The local Public Health director was trying to point this out at the weekend. So their scary graphs are great except they don't seem to bother to have spoken to people on the ground who know what it's like normally.

No one can get the ICU numbers in Manchester. Journalists have been trying. So not sure how people can confidently say hospitals are full.

Minimum wage should absolutely be that. Minimum. People will be destitute, many already are.

Burnham is a shit stirrer of the 1st degree. Why should his region have more support than others who have already been in tier 3 for some weeks? He thinks he knows better than the Manchester hospitals ITU chiefs. He is another man putting his own personal ambition above everything else.

The graphs speak for themselves, especially those heat graphs. I'm just surprised more areas weren't put into tier 3.

People need to remember that tier 3 is still nowhere near the level we were all in when nationally locked down. People in these areas must have done something that people in areas with much lower rates of infection/ deaths/hospital admissions didn't do. Work out what it is and stop doing it. Simple.

I was actually more worried that my in-law took weeks to ring her local GP because she was convinced they were only dealing with covid patients as that is all that has been rammed down our throats for 6 months. Turns out her previous breast cancer had now spread to her lung and her life expectancy will now be considerably shorter. Perhaps you should have even an ounce of compassion for people like that BoulangerieBabs before moralising to us northerners.

Oh come on. One minute the government is offering the £60 million it thinks GM needs.

I am with Andy Burnham. I know the rates are high here in Manchester but do you think that shutting pubs and betting shops will honestly make a blind bit of difference? Nah, folks round here will be having more house parties than ever this weekend and pushing the virus up even more. All this while Covid compliant business are driven to closing forever

What's so special about Manchester?

Why shouldn't it be put in tier 3 and given the same support as other cities that are in big trouble? Because Mancunians shout louder?

Why are they even doing deals with councils anyway? It will be the rest of us soon, so this is relevant to everyone whether you live in Manchester or not. The rate should be agreed by parliament and applied to all areas as they enter tier 3 (or businesses affected at tier 2, if that is the case). This in-fighting is going to do nothing for the public's confidence or compliance in getting things in order.

Exactly. And he was asking for the equivalent support given to Merseyside and Lancs, which we now haven’t got because the government refused to negotiate further. But they have enough money to give Robert Jenricks constituency £25m.

Andy Burnham is the one who is at fault in Manchester. Burnham clearly accepts that the restrictions are needed but seemed to think he could force the government into giving him more money by pretending otherwise and didn't know when to give in.
