F you Boris

There will be civil unrest in Manchester following this and I don’t blame them.

People won’t follow the rules as they have no respect for the government any more. Does anyone? Incompetence bullshit and lies.

As Requinblanc says above, Burnham is not against Manchester going into Tier 3 but rightly wants more financial support than the govt is offering. One of the things Burnham wanted was 80% of wages for furlough as in the first lock down.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 20/10/2020 17:52

@JamieLeeCurtains You know Burnham was a spad himself right? Grin

jambeforecreamofcourse · 20/10/2020 17:54

How is AB at fault for trying to ensure that the region gets adequate financial support to get through this? If people can't afford to stay at home and stick to the restrictions, then they won't.
I was listening to Today this morning and they said a Manchester ITU lead had stated the correct situation was not as dire as the government are making out.

CeeJay81 · 20/10/2020 17:57

I think it's utterly discussing what has happened to Manchester. They've given them far less than Liverpool and Lancashire. Whatever you think about Burnham etc why are the government giving them far less than the other tier 3 areas?

FractionalGains · 20/10/2020 17:57

Andy burnham is speaking total sense that we lose sight of who really suffers in lockdown and we need to protect them. The government is asking a huge amount of people and it needs to stump up to prevent real poverty.

Boris is basically putting low paid hospitality workers out of work just for the hell of it as we all know this isn’t the cause of the spread and won’t stop the spread

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/10/2020 17:58

@justgeton

Really? More like Burnham will have blood on his hands. If he thinks he knows better than the Manchester ITU consultant who last week told him to shut up and shut down then God help Manchester.
It's so hard to know what to believe though. Heard this doctor on the radio today, saying pretty much what I've just copied and pasted from a local newspaper:'Professor Jane Eddleston, Greater Manchester’s medical lead for the coronavirus response, also insisted the system can “cope” and that they would “bring more beds into play”. Prof Eddleston said despite the “stark” figures on hospital admissions and coronavirus cases given by the Prime Minister’s official spokesman earlier on Monday, extra capacity would be available.'
nosswith · 20/10/2020 17:59

Moving into tier 3 is the correct decision. Not providing a reasonable minimal income for those whose jobs end temporarily or permanently is not, whether it is in Manchester, Liverpool, or elsewhere.

TantieTowie · 20/10/2020 18:00

Question for those supporting Johnson on this: when your area goes into tier 3 (as many inevitably will at this rate), will you want your local pub where they don't serve food, and your local soft play to close with not enough financial support for employees? Sounds like they get to be on 80% of minimum wage – but that's it. I'd be surprised if many businesses didn't go bust on that.

@pequini

Burnham's a fool. Manchester's numbers are terrifying.
This. I'm no fan of BoJo and didn't vote for him but he gets criticised for putting the economy first and criticised for not putting the economy first. The scientists agree with him and he tried to negotiate but Burnham said no over and over and over again. Is he supposed to just let vulnerable people in Manchester die?
Purpledaisychain · 20/10/2020 18:04

@PetitFours

Burnham went about getting money completely the wrong way. He should have locked down and then entered talks for money. As someone else has said on here, public health should be about the health of the public, not about bargains, deals and playing the big man. In the time he has wasted, more people will have been infected.

He was offered 60 million, which was more than Greater Manchester was entitled too. They didn't accept it, they demanded 65. Because they were too busy being petty and trying to get one up on the government, they have been left with just 22 million.

GrossedOutted · 20/10/2020 18:05

@Ohthatsgreat The numbers were shown in the press briefing today (I can't remember if it was ITU or hospital admission but they split them down to Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire)

FractionalGains · 20/10/2020 18:08

@MonkeySnake bit simplistic. are you clamouring for the schools and unis to shut to prevent the vulnerable from dying?

KetoPenguin · 20/10/2020 18:10

Or were the government being petty at the expense of real people in Manchester.

MaxNormal · 20/10/2020 18:10

He was offered £60m, far more than elsewhere and quibbled over £5m. Well now he has £22m.

So the people of Manchester (not Burnham) have lost out on £38 million out of Johnson being spiteful at any pushback, and this is someone else's fault?

Poopoodidoo · 20/10/2020 18:11

I live in Salford. Cases have increased dramatically in the last few days alone. I take public transport and the number of people who refuse to wear masks or moan when I open the friggin windows is staggering. It has been anywhere between 30% to 50% not wearing masks on PT. People don’t wear masks in shops either. The pub near me still has people drinking after midnight, the police haven’t done anything about it. Based on my observations I knew this would happen so fuck off with your posturing, we’ve brought it on ourselves.

Rainbowllama4 · 20/10/2020 18:11

@Purpledaisychain agree 100% with you. Something doesn’t sit right with me about Burnham. Can’t understand the fawning over him on here.

MaxNormal · 20/10/2020 18:11

Manchester have acted very badly they have always been grabby. After the Arndale bombing they received more money than was necessary.

Just highlighting this for all to see, in case anyone missed it the first time round.

Obviously I was a bit simplistic - this is a very complex political and scientific issue so I didn't fully cover it in my two sentence comment on Mumsnet (shocking, I know!).
Schools and universities provide education, pubs provide beer. Maybe use your head a little bit with that comparison. Truthfully, I wouldn't be opposed to schools closing if the science indicated that they should. But, factually, children are less at risk and less likely to spread Covid than those frequenting bars are. And, yes, I do think universities should be operating remotely.

Manchester isn't a special case, we all need to be treated the same way.

They're getting £22m PLUS what BJ negotiates with individual constituencies. That's what was said in the press briefing.
