Panic buying ....have you started?

I've had two of my friends today text me saying they have bought a frozen turkey today.
Incase people start panic buying them and it's like the toilet roll fiasco.
Please tell me this isn't a actual thing?
Are turkeys the new toilet rolls?

notangelinajolie · 25/09/2020 00:43

I can live without turkey. But I'm back on toilet roll hoarding. When I have enough toilet rolls I'll start on rice, pasta, Heinz beans and batteries Confused

Fallpoetry · 25/09/2020 05:56

Can't get kitchen roll, cheapy paracetamol / ibuprofen, tinned sweetcorn, rice or any of the cheap tubes of toothpaste in my weekly shop. I can see the next few weeks being very frustrating.

Torvean32 · 25/09/2020 06:16

I normally shop on a Monday in Sainsbury's. It's all fine. Just a small Sainsburys, but can get all you need.

Yesterday I went to a Tesco 24 hr mega store. It was crazy. Ppl with trolleys filled to the top. Huge queues. And I was gutted that the dvd section was gone as there used to be a good selection of second hand dvd's.

It btook me ages to find anything. I was in for 2 hours. So thats my exercise done.

The best thing i got was a photo framed of my 4 day old ( first) nephew.

Tesco have a stock for smaller babies. I got a fluffy brown hoody with ears. He'll look like a little bear Grin

FippertyGibbett · 25/09/2020 06:26

You can have my turkey, I prefer chicken.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 25/09/2020 06:28

we were eating from our over packed freezer!
and we are going to regret that now arent we!

BanalAnal · 25/09/2020 06:35

John Lewis Christmas department is 89% sold out apparently

orangejuicer · 25/09/2020 06:43

Surely you get your Christmas meat from your local butcher like good citizens? Grin

I'm in an area which may lock down soon so I'm just making sure I have what we need here to avoid unnecessary trips out, though obviously there will be one or two.

Pixxie7 · 25/09/2020 06:49

There are still lots of delivery slots near me so don’t think it’s a problem yet.

FippertyGibbett · 25/09/2020 06:49

There are still lots of delivery slots near me too.

BumbleFlump · 25/09/2020 06:50

Yep toilet roll shelves empty here too - either the people doing it are not sane, selfish or both

CrunchyNutNC · 25/09/2020 06:50

But possibly we will need more turkeys this year if people aren't gathering in larger groups for Christmas. So what might have been 2 or 3 households getting together last year around 1 bird, could be needing 2 or 3 separate (though smaller) ones.

I predict a big demand for smallish turkey crowns this year. Wouldn't want to be a supermarket turkey buyer!

KatherineJaneway · 25/09/2020 06:54

No. Have started to get Christmas stuff in but won't buy a turkey until nearer the time.

BumbleFlump · 25/09/2020 06:59

No delivery slots here either.

For other reasons, I’m starting to realise that many people in my area seem to operate in a different reality - they seem to lack critical thinking skills - it’s bizarre. Little awareness of the power that the media tries to have over us. They just go along with it all like sheep.

BumbleFlump · 25/09/2020 07:06

Same with turkey FFS 🙄 such fixed mindsets - it’s fucking scary that people are capable of being so damn grabby and set in their ways...does it really matter if they have turkey?! This is why I hate Christmas, it’s the same old thing every year - most people aren’t even religious - it’s so fucking boring 🥱

slipperywhensparticus · 25/09/2020 07:13

I've got two weeks supply of food in case we need to self isolate agein came in handy when within 4 days back at school we were self isolating

CrunchyNutNC · 25/09/2020 08:02

I sort of get the turkey thing. People feel uncertain about the future, and more is outwith our control than normal. Humans don't like being uncertain and out of control. Knowing you have the turkey, which for some epitomises their Christmas, helps them feel a little bit less uncertain, and a little more in control.

theneverendinglaundry · 25/09/2020 08:12

Ocado has gone bonkers again, my next available slot is 4th october 😱

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 25/09/2020 08:13

We've been booking a month in advance on a rolling basis out of habit since lockdown. So we're noe booking end of october!

SistemaAddict · 25/09/2020 08:38

Waitrose has lots of available slots here. I have a weekly slot for the next 4 weeks as normal. I anticipate subs and missing items as time goes on though. As last time it seems to vary depending on location. North west here.

Parker231 · 25/09/2020 08:52

Tesco’s has full availability from Wednesday onwards.

SmileyClare · 25/09/2020 09:02

Hopefully our local Tescos will start rationing stock like they did in March.(3 tins per person, 1 pack toilet rolls etc)

Ours had no rice, pasta, beans, cooking oil and just tumbleweed on the toilet roll shelves. I was there on the day the government public address on restrictions was due and hoped some deluded people were just panicking in case a national lockdown was announced.

I blame FaceBook scaremongering and mankind's inherent selfishness.

52andblue · 25/09/2020 09:10

No.
but I try to have enough to last 2 weeks as I live rurally and can get cut off in winter. I've kept it that way over summer as I might need to isolate at any point. That way, I don't need to 'panic buy'.
I think fear is a horrible thing. We are being whipped up by the media, but supply lines will not be properly managed by those in Govt and I think people know this so you can see why folk might top up now although its generally unhelpful for all if you can walk to a few shops. (I can't - mine is 15 miles away)

Parker231 · 25/09/2020 13:27

Tesco’s has also now started rationing some items. There are some idiots out in the shops!

SistemaAddict · 25/09/2020 16:30

No loo roll or kitchen towel in my local Asda today. Looked ok for everything else.

CherryPavlova · 25/09/2020 19:15

We’re away in our cottage so had. Morrison’s delivery. The only thing we couldn’t get were chapati’s. They swapped celery for organic celery but everything else available and delivered including 12 loo rolls, rice, avocado and fennel. No issues at all.
