I've had two of my friends today text me saying they have bought a frozen turkey today.
Incase people start panic buying them and it's like the toilet roll fiasco.
Please tell me this isn't a actual thing?
Are turkeys the new toilet rolls?

No because I’m not selfish

Plussizejumpsuit · 23/09/2020 17:15

Ffs! I don't actually think threads asking if people are panic buying are helpful to the situation

SundayReilly · 23/09/2020 17:19

The selfishness of some people amazes me.

Porcupineinwaiting · 23/09/2020 19:26

@SundayReilly which people? Confused

SundayReilly · 23/09/2020 19:37

The selfish people who are out bulk buying and hoarding so that when the elderly are forced to go out( because they can't get delivery slots or lack the tech know how to online shop ) find the shelves are empty of essentials .

Or people like me who have worked fulltime plus throughout the pandemic find ourselves going at our usual time on a day off to buy food for our families ditto shelves empty.

Those vulnerable people who should be shielding also having to go out to find essentials because they can't secure online delivery or they manage a delivery to find essentials are missing-due to the shelves being stripped.

Those on low budgets who can't buy in bulk .

Those who live in the country and rely on online delivery either can't secure a slot or again find when it arrives basics are missing.

Selfishness and pure greed impacts on these groups.

Facelikearustytractor · 23/09/2020 19:46

The shelves looked fine today. Just the Daily Mail/Metro pedalling bullshit. The pictures are from March.

Porcupineinwaiting · 23/09/2020 19:48

Yeah but what males you think that's what's happening?

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 23/09/2020 19:58

I have always bulk bought from Amazon, other people are quite welcome to do the same, always seems to be plenty there. Saves bothering getting some stuff with weekly shop if you can get a few months supply delivered to your door

theneverendinglaundry · 23/09/2020 20:12

Panic buying boils my piss Angry

My local supermarket looked normal yesterday but ocado was out of pasta and loo roll.

Did people learn nothing the first time round? EVEN IN FULL LOCKDOWN THE SUPERMARKETS STAY OPEN.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/09/2020 20:16

EVEN IN FULL LOCKDOWN THE SUPERMARKETS STAY OPEN

And if you have to isolate you cant leave the house fir at least 14 days maybe more. No one in the house can. Empty shelves or skip fulls of excess food in the car park it won't matter BECAUSE YOU CANT GET TO IT.

then you will be scrounging off your mates and family who did try to make provision for self isolation.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 23/09/2020 20:17

@RufustheSniggeringReindeer

I can’t see how panic buying turkeys is going to be a thing

Aren’t turkeys usually just for Christmas

In the US we have turkey on St Michaelmas (easier to find than goose) and Thanksgiving (US holiday in late November) and Christmas.
Graphista · 23/09/2020 20:19

I suspect it’s not panic buying but lots of people sensibly and totally predictably buying a little extra to normal in anticipation of cv, winter illness, bad weather, brexit...

But the supermarkets and suppliers/manufacturers FAILED to properly plan for this!

Supply chains have adjusted except they haven’t! I’m already having trouble getting certain items.

I prep as much as I can with adding a little more than I need to weekly shop, something I started doing a few years back following Brexit result and stepped up after “beast from the east” hit us hard (we’re on a main road and yet were snowed in!) but limited funds and space mean certain things I struggle to do this with.

No, no one is panic buying here In the SE last time the SE seemed less affected than more remote areas. Here in rural Scotland we were hit quite hard, we seemed to be forgotten by suppliers and retailers. One retailer in particular seemed not to give a shit about its Scots customers!

@SquidgeBum where are you? Because certainly where I am there were problems getting basics - milk, bread etc

I’m veggie so a turkey shortage wouldn’t affect me but I still feel for those it would. That said I think as per pps if anything due to smaller gatherings and also no office parties etc if anything I think turkey farmers are going to find themselves with a lot of excess turkeys! I predict massively reduced turkeys available Christmas week.

Thankfully supermarket staff will curtail this as they know this will happen. they were very slow to react last time and no evidence this time will be any better. They focused on profit but ironically NOT preparing for what seems to me obvious increase in sales at this time means they’ll likely not profit as much as they could have! Seems very short sighted and poor business practice

As far as I remember, we could all go shopping quite easily. wow! How quickly people forget! Not all of us can actually. Some of us are disabled, housebound, need to shield/self isolate etc

Some of us are also fearful of Brexit price rises as we’re ALREADY on a tight budget!

and even if you do need to isolate there are deliveries and even takeaways if you can't get a delivery right away. again - things quickly forgotten! It was murder in March, April and even into May getting delivery slots. Takeaways ditto where I am. If you’re reliant on deliveries as I am this is a major problem, but then I do think there were a lot of people getting deliveries who didn’t need to.

@TableFlowerss you seriously need to do some reading on Brexit. We really aren’t a big enough “customer” for other country’s manufacturers and wholesalers to be worried about us not buying, they’ve the rest of the world to sell to! We however are VERY much dependent on EU trade, not only for EU final products but for our “Uk made” products ingredients, raw materials, tools etc AND for items from the rest of the world which come to us via EU distribution routes and warehouses.

Even the govt knows and acknowledges all this they’re just keeping it very very quiet!

@heyahun it’s all very well advocating reusables - how are people meant to keep them sanitary and therefore not making them ill if they can’t sterilise/wash them properly because there’s no detergent etc?

HeronLanyon · 23/09/2020 20:24

Honestly after brexit boxes season one (March last year ??) and season two (October Last year was it?) and lockdown season one (March this year) and now maybe a season two (now?) plus a future brexit season three (Dec) with the added complication of the annual Christmas season I have just had enough.

I am flat out refusing to panic buy anything. I will have my usual maybe two weeks food and other stuff in cupboards but that is it.

I honestly can’t even contemplate another list !

Right now I’d rather grub around in the pavement cracks for my greens if it comes to it.

Suzi888 · 23/09/2020 20:27

My friend has actually bought a frozen turkey....just in case. I didn’t panic but the first time and I won’t be this time.
There was so much food thrown out last time it was disgusting.

Anordinarymum · 23/09/2020 20:34

And no panic buying spending unnecessary funds from me either...

Fuck Christmas, fuck the turkey (I crucify them anyway) bring on the chickens which I can just about cope with these days

Apologies for swearing

Porcupineinwaiting · 23/09/2020 21:40

Was there lots of food thrown out last time? I remember a couple of widely reported, sensationalized stories in the press/social media accompanied by photos of an overflowing bin that turns out to have come from the house of a man who died.

ThatDamnScientist · 23/09/2020 21:46

Can you even buy whole turkeys yet?!?!

BluePheasant · 23/09/2020 21:50

My Christmas turkey is still happily running about in a field somewhere! I haven't even thought about Christmas yet tbh.

I don't panic buy stuff because I'm not a fucking dick.

GarlicSoup · 23/09/2020 22:13

@Rosehip10

People who panic buy anything are vulgar
I think you need a dictionary for Christmas.
BiddyPop · 24/09/2020 10:21

There is a big difference between the people who either normally or foreseeing problems build up their store cupboard at home with things they use anyway, and over a period of time by adding a few extra items to their trolley as they do their normal weekly shop. In preparation to avoid a problem they see coming.

Against the panic buyers who see a problem just as it happens (or get caught up in hysteria) and run out to grab anything they can - whether they or their family/household needs it or needs that amount.

The first is a normal part of everyday life, it’s just happening in a wider scale than usual.

The second is a predictable part of any major event like Covid or Brexit or winter snowstorms etc. But it is that second part that is likely to strip the shelves.

The group who do the first are not selfish because they are just organizing themselves so they won’t need to go out when shops are bananas and are actually improving things when an actual problem happens.

So how could that be vulgar or selfish?! They’re staying out of the way and not contributing to shortages.

Preppers and panic buyers are 2 completely seperate things but seem to be conflated here a lot.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/09/2020 12:31

Fuck Christmas, fuck the turkey (I crucify them anyway)

Isn't that Easter?

(Sorry Grin)

Usernamealreadyexists · 24/09/2020 12:47

Nope. Didn’t panic buy a single thing before or during lockdown and have zero intention of panic buying this time. There was no shortage of anything in C London.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 24/09/2020 14:57

Morrisons has released a list of things they're limiting.

Had a bit of an opposite effect on me and made me make sure we are have all those things in!

I think C london is a different case to where I am. Def nopoint if you know the supply chains where you live are fine.

SistemaAddict · 24/09/2020 15:11

What is on the Morrison's list?

OrangeSamphire · 24/09/2020 15:15

Well I just went online to place my usual order of 24x Biona chopped tomatoes which I do every two months. And I can't find them anywhere... so someone's panic buying.
