Panic buying ....have you started?

I've had two of my friends today text me saying they have bought a frozen turkey today.
Incase people start panic buying them and it's like the toilet roll fiasco.
Please tell me this isn't a actual thing?
Are turkeys the new toilet rolls?

I saw five absolute bellends in my local Tesco today with trolleys stacked high with loo roll and bottled water.

They are prepping for the apocalypse I think.

That tesco was stripped bare the first couple of weeks of lockdown.

LadyLindaT · 22/09/2020 17:25

Staged photos of empty shelves will trigger panic buying.

CherryPavlova · 22/09/2020 17:29

A decent turkey would have gone off by Christmas. It's better keeping its feathers until December. Buy local or grow your own is the best way to avoid panic buying.
Apart from lavatory paper; we have no local producers of lavatory paper.

Seriously, people might want to put some basic essentials by for Brexit (such as their usual drugs, candles or torches) and stock their freezers, but I think we'll be OK for lockdown.

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/09/2020 17:36

Some of you need to learn the difference.

Shoving everything into the trolly and piling it so high u cant see over- panic buying and unnecessary

Buying food that's on sale thats being expected to be sold like Xmas food thats being brought out- fine

Spending the past few weeks/months gradually buying a bit extra to replenish stores amd ensure you can survive if you and your family need to isolate for 2 weeks or however long it all drags on as you develple symptoms and then the next one does etc- entirely sensible.

Going shopping and buying enough to last a fortnight in case of isolation - sensible.

Whats not sensible is infecting people because of some bizarre need to prove a point , and then run out of food , expecting everyone else to bail you out becase you were too stupid to not think ahead. Wont be so superior having to scrounge food off those people you called arseholes for being prepared will u...

weightedpunch · 22/09/2020 17:37

No but I did do a big shop yesterday (about 2 weeks worth) as I wanted to get sorted before my local supermarket introduces their queuing system again.

I didn't see anyone panic buying. There was plenty of toilet rolls, tins, pasta etc. I imagine it will get worse over the next week or so, but the shops are not going to close so I hope people don't go too crazy.

ifonly4 · 22/09/2020 17:39

I don't need to panic buy. I've always had a good stash in to allow for illness, bad weather. I did build things up slowly for about four months (ie a couple of extra items each time I shopped) in case of no deal Brexit, and since then I've just kept on top of that, ie if I've used something replaced it fairly soon.

Our tiny freezer will need defrosting before xmas and wouldn't take a turkey anyway. We accept we're having a quiet xmas, so only two would quite like turkey. To be honest though, we're flexible enough to have salmon, white fish, nut roast or even a homemade pie with some veggies.

So my next shop will be just topping up on veggies, fruit, bread (but I'll make that if limited) and milk (again have uht which we really don't mind).

TheWayOfTheWorld · 22/09/2020 17:42

I bloody hate turkey so there will be no panic buying here...!

LetsPlayAGame20 · 22/09/2020 17:45

Um no? Why would I.?
In asda today I genuinely needed loo roll and so does my nan. So we went halves on a 24 pack.. I actually felt I was being judged.

Xmas. I'm virtually done bar the food, Xmas eve boxes and 5 other people gifts. But then I'm always done by Oct anyway as can't stand busy shops in the cold with kids... So used nursery days as my opportunity

However I was with my friend today and she massively bulk brought. She said the media scares her.. So if she thinks she won't wb able to get something then she panics. She brought 4 x 18 pack loo roll in one shop. Then 2 x 24 in another! She brought for her kids etc that don't live at home.
She brought bread mix x 30!
Along with other stuff. I said there was no need but she said she would actually lose sleep If she didn't get it all.

EasterBuns · 22/09/2020 18:45

I have seen a few Facebook posts of parents settling their children into universities including shots of full to the brim trolleys with enough loo rolls to keep them going till they come home in December. Hopefully that is what people are noticing rather than Covid panic buying.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/09/2020 19:33

@emmathedilemma how they are going to wipe their arse on a turkey??

If it's still got the feathers on it, it would work after a fashion.

BiddyPop · 23/09/2020 11:13

We’re a family of 3 and actually like turkey for Christmas - it’s very possible to get a smaller whole turkey, enjoy a good dinner, freeze a full breast to use for another dinner a couple of months later, and enjoy the rest of the leftovers in nice meals before reaching overload.

Admittedly, it’s nothing like the size either of our DMs get, as they are feeding between 8 and 18 depending on the year (and all those needing leftovers as well!!).

But for the years that we stay at home just ourselves, a small turkey is nice. Done properly (not overcooked, plenty of butter under the skin, plenty of seasoning, and lots of proper roasties). We have tried other things some years, but always come back o turkey.

WhiteChocTwix · 23/09/2020 12:19

Pasta and tomato ketchup stocks low in my local Waitrose this morning. Hmm Thankfully the wine section was well stocked Grin

TazMac · 23/09/2020 12:44

They’re discussing this on You and Yours on R4. Seems that those in London and the SE are the worst culprits Smile.

They are also reiterating that there is enough food to go round, so no need to stick pile.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/09/2020 12:48

Costco had indeed run out of own brand toilet roll last night. We had to buy the inferior and more expensive Charmin.

We're OK for pasta as Aldi was selling off some off for 19 pence a bag last week for some unexplicable reason so I picked up a couple of bags.

I bet they wish they'd kept it as they would have been able to sell it at any price this week.

Tootletum · 23/09/2020 12:55

Why do people keep putting these threads up? Why would I panic buy? There's plenty of food and I have two weeks worth anyway.

Waspnest · 23/09/2020 13:10

Do people buy more than one turkey? It's not like they're easy to store.

Ellsbells12 · 23/09/2020 13:12

@emmathedilemma

how they are going to wipe their arse on a turkey??
Crying at this
RegularHumanBartender · 23/09/2020 13:22

Did I miss something during the actual lockdown? As far as I remember, we could all go shopping quite easily. So why the need to clear shelves of pasta and bog roll? I genuinely can't understand the mentality of these people.

oo0Tinkerbell0oo · 23/09/2020 13:33

I didn't panic but last time and neither will i be doing so this time. I just hope the selfish idiots leave something on the shelves for the rest of us .

lughnasadh · 23/09/2020 13:44

I really don't think it's a lockdown thing.

More people realising that Boris and Co. are actually gunning for a no deal Brexit, without any back up plan in place.

It will destroy the supply chain, with no end in sight.

He's willing to break the law, and sell the most vulnerable down the river.

That terrifies me.

Ponoka7 · 23/09/2020 13:48

"So why the need to clear shelves of pasta and bog roll?"

Perhaps it's the need to budget buy.

I've been stocking up. I can't afford to pay more for stuff, the shelves were clear of the cheaper alternatives. So I've got, toilet roll, sanitary wear, personal items, medicined, sauces, tinned goods, cat food, cleaning products and my alcohol and treats for Christmas. I've done my Christmas decoration shopping and wrapping paper ect. I plan on finishing Christmas, including my Christmas pjs (yes I'm one of them) asap.

I was on the shielding list (but didn't shield) and my aim in stocking up is to minimise my time in shops, as the infection rate rises. Shopping for me means a bus journey. Those of us who have stocked up will mean that's there's more for everyone else and less people in the shops.

@WankPuffins, my DD works in residential care and they've been told to stock up. She overseas four residential houses. They have been wared that activities will probably end and so service users will be at home more, coupled with staff absence and isolation, they need to get done what they can as soon as they can. Also community groups are getting ready for any shortages. Food banks, churches etc now know potential supply issues.

My Sister's Church (which she is very involved in) used to do Christmas dinner for 40 people, this year they are offering home delivery. The people being criticised aren't doing anything wrong and might be volunteers.

LindaEllen · 23/09/2020 13:52

I didn't panic buy the first time, and I won't now either. We have a reasonable amount of food in the freezer, plus long life milk in case we need it. Also lots of cereal - but that's how much I ALWAYS stock up.

The shops aren't going to close, and even if you do need to isolate there are deliveries and even takeaways if you can't get a delivery right away. Nobody is going to starve!

Karmagoat · 23/09/2020 13:56

No I'm not panic buying because thankfully I'm not a stupid selfish cunt

Heyahun · 23/09/2020 14:21

Lolz. No I didn’t last time either! And guess what the shops got restocked! 😂 absolute idiots panic buying.

UselessInDisguise · 23/09/2020 14:25

I brought two packs of toilet roll because they were on offer. Bit pissed off that after years and years of online shopping, yet again there are no delivery slots available, even checking at midnight around here, when there were tonnes a couple of weeks ago. No nappies or wipes being delivered this week either, third week in a row, and I have two babies. So someone is being an arse my way...😠 No need to panic buy, no need to book up slots weeks in advance... Literally all that was announced yesterday was the pubs shutting an hour early!
