Panic buying ....have you started?

I've had two of my friends today text me saying they have bought a frozen turkey today.
Incase people start panic buying them and it's like the toilet roll fiasco.
Please tell me this isn't a actual thing?
Are turkeys the new toilet rolls?

OP posts:
longhaulstress · 22/09/2020 15:48

I'm in the north west and went to Costco today and the entire toilet roll section was empty.

DrGachet · 22/09/2020 15:53

Turkey is one thing I definitely wouldn't panic buy.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2020 15:53

Crap. Pun intended. We're down to the last couple of 4 packs in our big Costco toilet roll pack and was planning to go tonight, as per normal procedure to buy some toilet rolls and other bits.

I'm now expecting an empty toilet roll corner in Costco, and if last time's anything to go by, it will be weeks until they have more in.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 22/09/2020 15:53

Same as last time, no, I haven't started and I don't intend to start.

Whathappenedtothelego · 22/09/2020 15:54

There's no way I'd fit a turkey in my freezer, unless it's a very flat one. I wouldn't want one taking up space there until Christmas.

I did notice quite a few empty shelves in the supermarket recently, but I thought it was just the time of day.

Perhaps people are thinking that the chances of them having to self isolate for 2 weeks are much higher now the schools are back.

I always try to have a couple of weeks of tinned food in the cupboard in my the winter in case of snow, but I usually run it right down over the spring and summer, and build up again I the autumn.
I haven't let it run down this year, as we could be confined to home for 2 weeks with no notice at any moment.

Cheeseandwin5 · 22/09/2020 15:57

I have to say I saw some news reports and I did think about it.
Items that don't have a sell by date and I will definitely use I may get, even though I would hate to be a horder ( although maybe that's those ppl who horde with the intention of making a profit)

Triangularbubble · 22/09/2020 16:00

If anything there will be a huge glut of turkeys at Christmas - I suspect rule of six, no visiting households etc means lots of people will decide to have a chicken instead or something entirely different. A whole turkey for a family of 4 would be overkill.

And no, I am buying a normal weekly shop, having gradually accumulated enough food for a fortnight isolation over several weeks. My local supermarket has vast amounts of toilet rolls and pasta and I even noticed a whole section of frozen turkeys. So I think we’ll be ok.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 22/09/2020 16:02

I didn't know we were supposed to!

Why can't the Government give us a clear instruction on when we should panic buy, and what items we should to stock pile needlessly e.g. advocados, popcorn, dreft paint stripper etc.?

It looks like I'll just have to grab any old thing off the shelves - like I did last time. Sad

JS87 · 22/09/2020 16:02

There is no room for a turkey in our freezer but the only reason I can see to buy one in advance is that you could be self isolating in the run up to Christmas and not able to get one. We'll just have to eat something completely non Christmassy if that happens!

Dotinthecity · 22/09/2020 16:03

Of course not. Why panic buy? I didn't last time and managed perfectly well. We just bought what was available and are accordingly. I rediscovered a few foods that I hadn't eaten for years and was a bit less gung-ho when tearing off the toilet roll but that was it.

RaininSummer · 22/09/2020 16:11

Please don't encourage people to panic buy op. That is what causes problems. Definitely keep a little extra in but do it all the time and then there aren't problems in the supply chain.

Bumble84 · 22/09/2020 16:11

I sincerely hope not! I have just about enough food to get by for 2 weeks if we have to self isolate but by the end of that 2 weeks it would be getting pretty grim!

I have however started buying Christmas presents in the hope that it might help some businesses get some trade and because I’m due a baby 2 days before Christmas so want to be organised!

frozendaisy · 22/09/2020 16:12

Frozen turkey? It's one day at the end of a very bizarre, difficult year.

If we have beans on toast for Christmas dinner this year no one will give a monkey's.

Stellaris22 · 22/09/2020 16:15

How many of these threads do we need?

Stop being irresponsible and causing unnecessary panic. Only reason people panic buy is because of rumours like this causing it.

middleager · 22/09/2020 16:15

Well I knew that being vegetarian would come in handy one day.

movingonup20 · 22/09/2020 16:16

If we are limited to 6 for Christmas dinner then a decent sized chicken will do, i seriously doubt a turkey shortage, I predict a fresh turkey glut on Christmas Eve!

middleager · 22/09/2020 16:18

What about headless chickens?

Gatehouse77 · 22/09/2020 16:18

No panic buying here and no stocking up. We'll carry on menu planning and tweaking where necessary.
The only thing we couldn't get hold of for ages was flour but that was mostly for baking as something to do so didn't matter.

ColleagueFromMars · 22/09/2020 16:19

One woman reported clearing out the shelf of our local farm foods of loo roll this week Hmm

Since breshit was voted for I have a very slowly built up stockpile, which we needed to use a bit of at the beginning of the pandemic, namely loo rolls and soup. No turkey though.

Porcupineinwaiting · 22/09/2020 16:20

A whole Turkey for a family of 4 would be overkill

That's what I thought. Sad Greedy bastards had scarfed the lot by twelfth night.

passthemustard · 22/09/2020 16:22

I have never bought a frozen turkey in my life. We never have turkey at Xmas anyway, frozen or fresh.

I do have a 14 day emergency supply when for when we will undoubtedly need to isolate for 2 weeks when one of my DC gets a cold and we can't get a test or one of them actually has symptoms or there's a positive test in one of their year groups.

If that doesn't happen I'm due a baby in December so will more than likely use it then so I don't have to do anything much with a newborn for 2 weeks.

No harm being prepared.

Rosehip10 · 22/09/2020 16:24

People who panic buy anything are vulgar

Enchantmentz · 22/09/2020 16:25

Panic buying to me is shoving everything and anything in to one or more trolleys. I have started buying a couple extra tin of tomatoes, bag of lentils, and tuna this week. But just to top up my depleting store anyway. Things like buIk rice and pasta I can buy online from a supplier.I am mostly planning for brexit as well as a potential 14 day isolation. Not sure what will happen with brexit but best prepare for a shitstorm anyway.

I used to only buy a 4 pack of toilet roll ever other week but now just buy the huge packs so they last longer.

When it all kicked off before I just lived on what I had and never stepped foot in a shop for about 3 weeks, people also picked up the odd bit for me.

Imloosingmyshit · 22/09/2020 16:25

Nope. Totally unnecessary. Didn’t we already learn that?

Time2change2 · 22/09/2020 16:26

No, no one is panic buying here In the SE. Shops as normal. Please don’t, it’s completely selfish and it’s vulnerable people who end up not having what they need
