I've had two of my friends today text me saying they have bought a frozen turkey today.
Incase people start panic buying them and it's like the toilet roll fiasco.
Please tell me this isn't a actual thing?
Are turkeys the new toilet rolls?

Nope.

RepeatSwan · 22/09/2020 16:27

@Rosehip10

People who panic buy anything are vulgar
This is bollocks, many a nice middle class home has a well stocked larder!
Titsywoo · 22/09/2020 16:27

Ha! No of course not. I always have enough food in that we could cope for a couple of weeks without shopping anyway. Xmas is ages away and I'll either queue if I have to or eat what is available. Turkey is manky and dry anyway.

ColleagueFromMars · 22/09/2020 16:29

Panic buying to me is shoving everything and anything in to one or more trolleys.

Exactly. If turkeys are on sale already, presumably the shops are expecting people to buy them l. I wouldn't call buying a turkey panic buying.

BruceAndNosh · 22/09/2020 16:32

IF I wanted to stock my cupboards or freezer, a turkey would be the Last thing I would buy. There would be not much room left for useful stuff
I don't need to "panic buy" as I have ensured my cupboards are well stocked ever since the supermarket shelves were back to normal. This has not involved panic buying.

LemonTT · 22/09/2020 16:32

Many a nice middle class family are vulgar. The type who would be at home in Orange County wearing a MAGA hat and hiding the guns behind the well stocked larder.
Think Phyllis Schlafly.

Roselilly36 · 22/09/2020 16:34

I can’t stand turkey, so someone is welcome to panic buy mine! But leave some toilet rolls for me please.

PattyPan · 22/09/2020 16:34

@Triangularbubble

If anything there will be a huge glut of turkeys at Christmas - I suspect rule of six, no visiting households etc means lots of people will decide to have a chicken instead or something entirely different. A whole turkey for a family of 4 would be overkill.

And no, I am buying a normal weekly shop, having gradually accumulated enough food for a fortnight isolation over several weeks. My local supermarket has vast amounts of toilet rolls and pasta and I even noticed a whole section of frozen turkeys. So I think we’ll be ok.

I reckon you will be right - no one will want all those massive turkeys that serve 10+ people. People will have to have sooo many turkey sandwiches!
Rosehip10 · 22/09/2020 16:34

@RepeatSwan People of any "class" can be vulgar you know!

RepeatSwan · 22/09/2020 16:35
@RepeatSwan People of any "class" can be vulgar you know!
I don't really believe in 'vulgar' think it is made up by judgey pants!

Rosehip10 · 22/09/2020 16:37

@RepeatSwan Okay then, so in your eyes, no action or behaviour is ever vulgar?! Really?

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 22/09/2020 16:38

Turkey’s will be reduced on Christmas Eve, I reckon. It’s not very nice and a lot of people just buy it because it feeds loads of people

SqidgeBum · 22/09/2020 16:42

Why would anyone need to panic buy? Nobody starved in March. The shops stayed open. There were very little problems with stock (bar maybe flour and some pastas ..... which none of us will die without). Panic buying is unnecessary

BiddyPop · 22/09/2020 16:42

There was a deal on chickens last week, and we've been eating them a bit more than usual recently, so I bought 2 for the deal and froze one. But that will probably be eaten within the next 3 weeks.

I was in Lidl this afternoon to get milk and fruit (I forgot the bread - DH will be grumpy..) and it was very very quiet. The only sign of panic buying was a Polish guy buying a whole box of lemons (like, maybe 60 lemons?!), but he admitted to the checkout operator that he was about to make Limoncello for Christmas. I can empathise with that purchase Grin

My panic buying will be in another week or so, when I need to restock my ground coffee supplies and I intend getting maybe 5 bags, as we are going through so much. But we have found a good local roastery for that, and I'm just saving on P&P as we'd be ordering again soon.

1forAll74 · 22/09/2020 16:42

I never panic buy anything, it makes me angry to go in shops, and witness selfish greedy people grabbing everything off the shelves. Thankfully supermarket staff will curtail this as they know this will happen.

BiddyPop · 22/09/2020 16:43

(Polish guy had left another whole carton of lemons behind him - not cleared the shelf)

LyndaSnellsSniff · 22/09/2020 16:50

Probably won’t panic buy turkey but as soon as the After Eights hit the shelves, I’m having ‘em!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/09/2020 16:57

Nope, but I was thrilled to find pigs in blankets the other week, and bought two packs - we had them with a roast chicken and they were delicious!

randomsabreuse · 22/09/2020 16:57

I've gone back to replace things as you open the last packet rather than as you finish the packet type of stock control, although mostly because track and trace are at work in the nursery attached to DC's class so chances of being stuck at home for 2 weeks have increased again (local lockdown area in Scotland so if any family member is track and traced we're all in for 2 weeks!)

Have kept a fully stocked freezer as I always do, just trying to be more organised and avoid last minute oops trips to the supermarket!

IckyPop · 22/09/2020 16:58

@emmathedilemma

how they are going to wipe their arse on a turkey??
Grin
Parker231 · 22/09/2020 17:01

Why would anyone ever need to panic buy? The shops are open every day and they always have food. Can’t think about Christmas shopping when we have no idea yet as to whether we will still be under any form of restrictions as to visiting family.

PinkMacaron · 22/09/2020 17:02

Is anyone worried about the surplus of turkeys? If the farmers can't sell them, they might just release them to run amok in our empty towns and cities. I'm surprised the government haven't tried to mitigate this to be honest.

Pink98 · 22/09/2020 17:17

I bought an extra pack of loo rolls but I don’t really see that as immoral panic buying idk

PattyPan · 22/09/2020 17:20

Ooh you have just reminded me that I was planning to make limoncello too! Time to stockpile some lemons Grin
