I've had two of my friends today text me saying they have bought a frozen turkey today.
Incase people start panic buying them and it's like the toilet roll fiasco.
Please tell me this isn't a actual thing?
Are turkeys the new toilet rolls?

My local shops already have bare shelves, no pasta, no soap, no antibacterial wipes, toilet roll, it does not matter i I dont do it, I saw people loading upcars full of stuff which is usually a very rare sight around here.

We are all home this week waiting for test results for dd1.
I have needed a home delivery. Having managed easily to get slots booked for the past few month, I can’t get one until next Tuesday!
It’s crazy. Tried Morrison’s, ASDA, Tesco and Iceland.
Ended up asking a friend to grab me a few bits and drop them at the top of the garden.

Porcupineinwaiting · 23/09/2020 14:40

@RegularHumanBartender yeah, you missed how hard it was to get any shopping if you and your family were self isolating actually with covid and had not only to feed yourselves but arrange for shielding parents to be supplied.

I guess lockdown was less of a problem if you weren't actually sick.

SistemaAddict · 23/09/2020 14:43

No panic buying here as I prep year round for anything untoward. I started with brexit prepping then kept stocked up. Some things I buy in bulk anyway, some things I stock up on when on offer. My grandmother had a well stocked pantry and freezer when I was growing up and I'm taking after her.

IcyApril · 23/09/2020 14:45

No, I’m fact I accidentally went for the food shop a few days late then did start to panic that others might have panic bought the food I needed for the week. All was fine but a little busier than usual.

RedskyAtnight · 23/09/2020 14:46

What are we meant to be suddenly panicking about? Surely nothing has changed since Monday except we can't go to pubs after 10pm?

Lexilooo · 23/09/2020 14:50

Bernard Matthews marketing department back from furlough?

cologne4711 · 23/09/2020 14:50

I'm not panic buying - that's when you go into a supermarket and fill your trolley full of stuff.

I am preparing for possible self-isolation and/or a no deal Brexit buy buying extra chocolate and tinned fruit whenever I go into a supermarket. Priorities.

(also buying sanitary towels - running out of them would not be funny)

Char2015 · 23/09/2020 14:53

I think one of the problems is that although shops remain open, if a lockdown was to happen, it would be because the virus is getting more out of hand again, and people just don't want to chance going out and potentially catching the virus. So no matter if shops remain open, if a lockdown seems likely, people will panic buy and people will start shopping online again. I think that is where we are at, with numbers increasing to high levels again, people think a lockdown is on the way.

Parker231 · 23/09/2020 14:54

What has happening or is going to happen which means we need to rush to the shops?

Helenj1977 · 23/09/2020 14:55

No. I really prepped last time, I bought extra starting in February.

This time, I'm not worried. Shops are prepared and will stay open. I don't think we need to worry.

bert3400 · 23/09/2020 14:59

Wait untill January 1st ...then the shit will really hit the fan. Panic buy everyone ...Brexit is just round the corner Smile

Strawberrylaceaddict · 23/09/2020 14:59

We went to Costco today as they have the cars that my son collects at a really good price, they were queuing to get in (not done that in months) and they were queuing round the shop with an hours queue and trolleys piled high with food. Didn’t even see it as bad as that back in March! It was insane... we didn’t bother and left.

TableFlowerss · 23/09/2020 15:23

To panic buy for what?

Did the public not realise that there is plenty of everything?! And that it was utterly pointless to do it in the first place?!

Why on earth do it again? What you panic buying for? Incase they run out of everything? They didn’t Iast time so why would they this time?

Ridiculous 🤣

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 23/09/2020 15:29

We really struggled getting delivery slots last time. We now book a month in advance for Tesco. Every time we book a delivery we book the next one in amonths time so every week we have a delivery. We have done since we were able to get deliveries and certainly worth it.

Ive not got my head round it but we will be buying xmas presents early
Ive got the high value ones already but need the little bits.

Food. We struggled last time so will come up with a bit of a plan and start stocking up on basics again from saturday
Cereal ll milk etc. It will all get used.

lughnasadh · 23/09/2020 15:40

For Brexit @TableFlowerss.

Do you really think the supply chain won't fall apart?

Even the Government know it will, they are just hoping to blame the EU and Covid.

It will be awful unless you own your home outright and have loads of money.

Rinoachicken · 23/09/2020 15:40

If it’s anything like the MN Chicken I reckon a MN Turkey would last a good month!

candourclegane · 23/09/2020 15:54

No and won't be as I have been building up stores since July as I knew the panic buying would start again at some point. Have signed up for milk deliveries too they deliver other basics (at a price!) so v useful as a back up.

wildraisins · 23/09/2020 16:45

@RepeatSwan

Btw no I don’t panic buy because I’m not an idiot.

Not sure buying an extra pack of loo rolls makes someone an idiot tbh.

There's a big range of normal food stocks in people's homes, think some people always have more in.

That wouldn't class as panic buying.

Panic buying is people going out and clearing the shelves of things that they don't even need... it's daft and I hope it doesn't happen again.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 23/09/2020 16:47

That wouldn't class as panic buying

Youd be surprised as to what constitutes ‘panic buying’ on here

TableFlowerss · 23/09/2020 16:50

They (other countries) need to sell us the food for their own finances, so I don’t worry no!

I bet they’re panicking that they can’t shift it all and are worried that we will look elsewhere for produce.

They need us as much as we need them

TableFlowerss · 23/09/2020 16:53

@lughnasadh

Also, even those that do panic buy only have a certain amount of fridge/freezer space so they could stock up for a few more weeks compared to someone that hasn’t been sucked in to panic buying.

If its as doom and gloom as you’re suggesting, we’ll all be dead of starvation in fear 6 months max..

I’m pretty sure it’ll be just fine Wink

Worriedmum999 · 23/09/2020 16:57

I’ve stocked up completely this week on tins, long life stuff and frozen stuff with a massive shop and booked shopping slots 6 weeks in advance. I knew this would happen. If everyone else is going to be selfish with going on holiday, eating out, mixing with all and sundry over the summer (which we didn’t) then I am going to feel no guilt about making sure my family doesn’t go without when we are all locked down again thanks to idiots.

Parker231 · 23/09/2020 17:06

When have the shops ever ran out of food ? They might always not have the type of pasta or tinned tomatoes you usually buy, but there is always food. No one starves!

Heyahun · 23/09/2020 17:10

The stiff people get panicked about as well - wipes and liquid soap -

You don’t need anti bac wipes - just use whatever spray you have at home to clean surfaces - bar soap is fine and it never ran out even in the height of lockdown

There are heaps of reusable baby wipes available - you don’t need wet ones from a packet!

Even nappies you could get some reusable a for emergencies if you don’t want to use them all the time - then you’d not be panicked if you can’t get your hands on disposables for a few days!
