Why can't he just answer a question straight?
And also if you have children did he just suggest you tell your employer and stay home? That is not going to go down well!

I did hear some commentator on the radio talking about Donald Trump and his supporters, still cheering for him and saying what a great job he's doing on CV. Anyway, radio bloke said he thought the only thing DT could do that would lose him the support of these people would be to come out as gay.

jasjas1973 · 12/05/2020 13:56

I wonder what he would have to do to get people thinking he's not doing a great job?

Many of my tory voting Boris supporting friends are starting to criticise him now, look on some of the Cornish MPs facebook pages? lots of tory voters very unhappy at the lifting of restriction on travel for exercise/walking.

JamieLeeCurtains · 12/05/2020 14:05

I think for people invested in a cult of personality, it assaults their own sense of identity to admit they've been misled.

It's a long haul to deprogramme them get them to change their minds, and they usually need kid gloves treatment. Trying to humiliate them doesn't work.

See: The Moonies; MLM Pyramid Schemes; Brexit

FuckThisWind · 12/05/2020 14:15

JamieLeeCurtains that is completely true. The dogged perseverance so as not to lose face. Oh the irony of it. Which may or may not be lost on them. As they will rarely admit it.

JamieLeeCurtains · 12/05/2020 14:44

@FuckThisWind I think it's a very skilled job to deprogramme someone without replacing the original misguided belief with a sense of self-loathing.

You have to empathise with the misguided person, say things like "I can completely see how you were taken in by this charismatic character" - even if you can feel your nose growing - and gently suggest alternative ways of thinking, or carefully dig for suppressed thoughts / cognitive dissonance.

lyralalala · 12/05/2020 14:51

My point, your saying The Sun have written a better version of what Boris said, meaning a Newspaper Report understood.
So it was not just waffle, there were valid points.
The reason I just posted the link was to prove just that.

People should not have to read a news paper or watch tv to get a coherent version of something so important it was broadcast across all tv channels during a pandemic.

We should not have to rely on the BBC, ITV or the Sun to give us the things that Boris specifically mentioned.

Not for that matter should we need them to clarify which of the three guidelines for the same thing that the PM and the Foreign Secretary gave out.

Important information should be clear and concise. The ability to give information in a clear and concise way should be above any politician’s skill level given their job. It definitely should not be above the skill level of a Prime Minister.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 12/05/2020 15:10

Just to show how image management works. The recorded address masquerading as a live broadcast was filmed by sitting his knibbs on the wrong side of a table wedged into a doorway to create a statemanly image.

So agree with this. I have read so many articles about the cult of Trump and it's all about not losing face. To decry Trump means to question themselves and their beliefs and they can't do that.

And I'm afraid there is an element of this with BoJo. People love his bluster, his banging the table, his buffoonery. Yet they can't seem to grasp that it is all smoke and mirrors and when a disaster strikes... pufffff... there is nothing there to back up his waffle. They're probably too embarrassed to admit it. Just like the Emperor's New Clothes.

Smithtylater · 12/05/2020 15:50

@MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing OMG that photo! Why is he awkwardly in between a door frame 😂

To get the open room, the chandelier and the image of outside coming through?

Rather than the image of a closed room?

Subliminal.....

chomalungma · 12/05/2020 16:00

Do you think he moved it himself?

Roussette · 12/05/2020 16:01

Maybe the fact the Office of National Statistics have now officially collated the official figures to over 40,000 may make Boris's fans think that perhaps he is not doing a good job.....
We are way way above any other European country

JamieLeeCurtains · 12/05/2020 16:17

The excess death rate (above what would normally be expected for the time period) is going to be around 50,000 and rising?

MummyPop00 · 12/05/2020 16:31

Are all European countries the same in terms of how they report their Covid mortality figures?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 12/05/2020 16:45

Bit like Cameron on his bike with the chauffered Jag trailing behind with his red box. Or this one from 1975. The message is "She's just an ordinary housewife." The more prosaic truth was she had a housekeeper who was asked to make herself scarce for the photoshoot.

Roussette · 12/05/2020 16:50

We don't know that for all countries, but as I understand it UK, Italy and Spain report in the same way, so it makes our figures compared to those two countries so awful.

I can remember about 6 weeks ago being absolutely shocked at Italy reaching 10,000. I was quite upset about it. Now look at us.

cantdothisnow1 · 12/05/2020 16:50

People will be dismissed if they can't attend work due to not being able to get childcare sorted.

If you have worked there less than 2 years then you will have no right to claim unfair dismissal. If you have been there more then you may be able to argue it is unfair (outside the range of reasonable responses of an employer).

Mummy why do you persist in defending him?

Thisisanoutrage · 12/05/2020 17:30

Saw this on Twitter. It amused me.

VICP03 · 12/05/2020 17:40

I would absolutely love to see anyone who bitches and moans about how well the PM and is cabinet are doing.... do a better job... we are in uncharted territory and every day is a learning experience a bit like being a parent.....

StoorieHoose · 12/05/2020 17:46

This thread is not about how well the government are doing. It's about what a shite communicator Boris is. All that private education wasted

Macmoominmamma · 12/05/2020 17:47

We voted for him!

TinySleepThief · 12/05/2020 17:47

I would absolutely love to see anyone who bitches and moans about how well the PM and is cabinet are doing.... do a better job...

I would imagine there are loads of people on mumsnet who would do a better job but that's not the point. It's his job not ours and you would think he'd do a better job given he spent his whole life coveting it.

I'm not saying I could run the country but I know for sure I could explain facts, figures and deliver information in a clear and concise manner a damn sight better than he does.

ssd · 12/05/2020 17:49

Is anyone really surprised he's so shit?

Namechangervaver · 12/05/2020 17:51

Alok Sharma is getting absolutely slated on Twitter, saying he's boring etc. Im surprised about that because I was just thinking about the contrast between him and Boris. He absolutely shows up Boris and his waffle.

Alsohuman · 12/05/2020 17:51

Is anyone really surprised he's so shit?

He’s been even more shit than even I expected.
