Am I the only deluded one clinging on to a tiny bit of hope for our July holiday?

Yeah I know it's selfish to be worried about holidays what with everything else which is going on, but I've already had to cancel one at Easter. I'm sure there are a fair few of us who can't wait to get away. We're booked to go to Spain mid July, staying in a private apartment so no shared accommodation/hotel to worry about. Spain are starting to ease restrictions. I think they are going to need tourism to start up soon as long as they can be sure it's safe.

Is anyone else still holding on to a tiny bit of hope for a summer holiday? I really can't be the only one, can I?

Noooblerooble · 04/05/2020 18:08

I think you definitely have at least a chance of it going ahead. Certain Spanish hotels have said they desperately want British tourists because they can't survive a summer without them. Airlines will want to get back to making money if they can and are looking at asking people to wear masks on board among other things. France is already saying they will let Brits in without needing to quarantine. At some point things have to get moving for the economy and that includes holidays. The numbers of people with the virus are dropping week on week and if we get contact tracing sorted then bit by bit a normal life will resume.

About 99% of people survive their brush with this admittedly horrible virus. The damage to lives done by people not doing something as simple as going on holiday could be far more catastrophic and that includes in places like Cornwall here.

Watchagotcha · 04/05/2020 18:16

In France, the govt has said that French people should expect only to holiday in France this year: I can’t see us welcoming visitors from anywhere else. Sorry OP - I’d love to be more optimistic (we have a massive holiday of a lifetime trip to Asia planned for July, that is slowly going down the pan).

BigChocFrenzy · 04/05/2020 18:25

I'm in Germany and the German govt has already warned we are unlikely to be able to have foreign holidays this year

After all the drama of bringing back thousands of people from each country who were stranded abroad with lockdown,
anyone who goes on holiday and gets stranded this year should have to organise their own bloody way home.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 04/05/2020 18:26

Social distancing may have to continue into 2021.

Why do you think you can go on holiday?!!

Airport, plane, ferry, all packed all the time. Beaches, towns, monuments etc. Social distancing will mean endless queuing. Same with restaurants and bars.

How on earth does anyone think we can go on holiday?🤷🏼‍♀️

booboo24 · 04/05/2020 18:27

I'm clinging on to hope for Majorca in mid August, but realistically I'm not expecting it to go ahead. We have a weekend booked to Amsterdam too in September which I'm slightly more optimistic about....

AgeLikeWine · 04/05/2020 18:28

It’s very, very unlikely that non-essential leisure travel to or from the countries which have been hit hardest by covid such as the U.K., Spain, France, Italy, USA etc etc will be possible until the autumn at the very earliest.

Non-essential between countries which have not been hit so hard, eg Germany, Greece, Australia, NZ is more likely to be possible at some point this summer.

mbosnz · 04/05/2020 18:30

We've just been told that our flights to NZ have been cancelled for late July. First time we'd have been home since coming over here.

It was a little bit heartbreaking. We were expecting it, but to have it become actuality. . .

I hope you get your Spanish holiday OP. Smile

Laiste · 04/05/2020 18:31

UK caravan park holiday at the end of July here.

If the caravan park is open we'll go! Like a pp i'm saying nothing to them unless and until they contact us. Usually the balance is due 6 weeks before the holiday date. That's mid June. We'll see ... there's a £300 deposit floating around ...

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 04/05/2020 18:33

Saw a travel journalist on tv the other day.

She said travel and holidays as we’ve known them will not resume again for 3 or 4 years

Hobbesmanc · 04/05/2020 18:36

Aww it's so tough- dont be ashamed of wanting a holiday. We lost a big family break at Easter in the Lakes although Hoseasons have let us rebook at the same price for Easter next year

Its my big 50 this year and we were due to have three weeks road trip from San Fran to Charleston in June- months of planning and ticking off the bucket list en route- but obvs no longer. We have got our flights back but some of the US hotels were pre paid and we cant get anyone to respond. Maybe some cash write off.

However we also have a week in a very nice Thai beach booked for my actual birthday in November and I'm hoping (maybe unrealistically) for that. But i'm a glass half full type

fairgame84 · 04/05/2020 18:40

OP I'm just as deluded as you. I'm clinging to hope for Tunisia in September for my wedding. Originally it was meant to be in june.
Watch Simon Calder the travel expert, he's full of optimism and will totally tell you what you want to hear. I asked him on his Insta live and he said he doesn't see why I won't be able to go in September. He's my favourite person now 😂

Christmascookiesmmmm · 04/05/2020 18:40

Yes I am too! We haven’t been on holiday for 3 1/2 years for various reasons/anxieties and in January finally managed to book a trip to Slovenia ( flights plus Airbnb) mid July.. i think easyJet is letting people change flights so we could do that but then I’m not sure when to change to!! Holiday needs a few more things booked eg train tickets to London (we were planning on booking closer to time) and accommodation for second half of holiday so obviously I’m not booking those yet.. just wondering whether to bite bullet and change flights/ cancel Airbnb . Tbh I think if we could just cancel the flights and get the money back I’d do that as it is looking unlikely that travel will be possible in July .. but obviously airlines won’t let us do that!

Hollyhobbi · 04/05/2020 18:42

How are ye all going to self isolate if you're allowed to fly in the first place?

GreyGardens88 · 04/05/2020 18:43

I'm also due to go to Thailand, but at the end of September. Who knows if that's going ahead, if not hopefully I can get a refund and that's still 600 quid back in my pocket to use on other holidays. Maybe a December city break?

Geometricprince · 04/05/2020 18:43

I think it's unlikely but I really really hope you get your holiday Smile I like your optimism, we could all do with a bit of it right now Wine

Geometricprince · 04/05/2020 18:44

Not sure where the wine came from, perhaps subconsciously it's my optimism substitute Grin

Mightymurphy · 04/05/2020 18:46

Sorry OP, I don’t think we will get our October holiday so I don’t think July will be happening.

georgialondon · 04/05/2020 18:52

If you are in uk I think you'll be disappointed. I don't think they will be letting Brits in by July. No chance.

HeronLanyon · 04/05/2020 18:52

I am not planning on any foreign travel this year at all. Was about to book when this whole shitshow started so luckily not losing out. Also unbelievable lucky I went on long Maldives trip Dec/jam. That holiday will do me for some time.
Can’t really even imagine travelling now - 6 weeks have left home 5 times to shop for food. Imagine being crammed into Gatwick or similar. Literally unimaginable.
Good luck everyone with dreams plans refunds holiday.

maresydoats · 04/05/2020 18:53

Hmmm. Not sure if airlines will be running as they used to. Not sure about social distancing in airports and on board. Five hours maybe to get on the germ ridden plane with all the restrictions?

I couldn't be bothered quite frankly right now. But let us see what happens.

14 day quarantine either end is another bummer. What country would want to import the potentially infectious. Nah. Costa del back garden sounds ok to me at the moment.

TorkTorkBam · 04/05/2020 18:56

Have you checked your travel insurance for what will happen if there's another lockdown while you are out there?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/05/2020 18:58

Wine is always a good optimism substitute 🍷

OP posts:
Pinkrose27 · 04/05/2020 18:58

I’ve no idea but it’s good to optimistic!

Madhairday · 04/05/2020 19:00

The damage to lives done by people not doing something as simple as going on holiday could be far more catastrophic

Seriously? It's more catastrophic for people to miss their holidays than for 30,000 people plus to die? Ok then.

Op I don't think there's much chance but I still hope you get to go. I'm hoping to go to my UK holiday cottage in July but not holding much hope for that.

Inthemuckheap · 04/05/2020 19:00

Sorry but I doubt it. I've just cancelled my end of July holiday to a Greek island as prefer to lose the deposit rather than have to shell out this week for the balance. Rather the money earn me some paltry interest than the holiday company.
Already missed skiing and still waiting for the refund and was meant to be away this week too. It's all a bit shit.
