Am I the only deluded one clinging on to a tiny bit of hope for our July holiday?

Yeah I know it's selfish to be worried about holidays what with everything else which is going on, but I've already had to cancel one at Easter. I'm sure there are a fair few of us who can't wait to get away. We're booked to go to Spain mid July, staying in a private apartment so no shared accommodation/hotel to worry about. Spain are starting to ease restrictions. I think they are going to need tourism to start up soon as long as they can be sure it's safe.

Is anyone else still holding on to a tiny bit of hope for a summer holiday? I really can't be the only one, can I?

Not that it neccessarily concerns Britain as it is no longer a member, but I don't think an EU country could say they were accepting visitors from one EU country but not from others. So for example Spain couldn't say they would welcome visitors from, say, Germany, but not Italy. I would think that either their borders are closed to all tourists from other EU countries or they are open to all.

Just a few days ago, France made it clear that its proposed 14 day quarantine didn't apply to visitors from the EU (and the UK). It will be interesting to see what other countries decide in the coming weeks and months. There has been talk of a European 'travel bubble' but I wonder if it would work in practice.

I was supposed to go to two UK concerts within a week in June (Cardiff and Coventry). Then two weeks later to another in Berlin in July. Not going to happen. I was in Berlin last June and was so looking forward to it this year. My mad adventure this year is out of bounds. Next year, fingers crossed.

FedHimtoTigers1990 · 05/05/2020 23:33

I admire your optimism OP.

We have Spain booked for mid July but definitely won't be going. I feel its far too risky. Imagine being out there and becoming ill or stranded. Trying to get hold of Jet2 to try and transfer to next year.

mydogisthebest · 06/05/2020 17:21

No way will you be going in July. I think we will be lucky if we can go abroad by October. More likely to be next year

PrincessConsuelaBananahamm0ck · 06/05/2020 18:52

Yeah.....I'm sorry but I think you're being optimistic. Good on you for not giving up hope though! We gave up hope. Had a lovely self catering accommodation right on the beach in Devon booked for 2 weeks in early August. Were so looking forward to a good old fashioned British beach holiday, had visions of eating out most nights, surf lessons for our children, basically hanging out at the beach every day. It dawned on us that it seems unlikely things will be open properly even by then. Pubs, surf hire shops, arcades etc. So we cancelled it.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 06/05/2020 19:11

Not cancelling till Jet2 cancel our flights. I'll be the one knocking on the door of the airport with my suitcase! 😂

YukoandHiro · 06/05/2020 19:15

Totally understand the hope but it's very very unlikely

VenusOfWillendorf · 06/05/2020 20:32

Here in Switzerland they are talking about reopening borders within the Schengen Area. Not sure it will happen though, maybe just reciprocal agreements between some countries with low numbers and intensive track and trace.

I am booked to visit family in Ireland in July but am pretty certain it wont happen - I would need to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival before seeing anyone, which would be difficult (you cant do it in a hotel or take a taxi/bus etc) and miserable.

girlicorne · 06/05/2020 20:43

We have cancelled our Spain holiday for mid July and I have booked a week in Cornwall for the first week in August instead, I m not convinced this will even happen but we ll see, if not then we can move it to next year. We also have a cottage in the lakes for the end of August.I m another hoping for the best but prepared for the worst. I d like to go abroad October half term but I wouldn’t book it until just before.

DBML · 06/05/2020 22:47

I think people are applying what the situation is like now, to their opinion as to what will happen in July...

But July/ August holidays are 11+ weeks away and who know what we’ll be saying in 6 weeks.

We might be saying ‘oh God, round two!’ Or we might be saying ‘This is looking much better now’.

One thing I do know, is that no country is going to exclude the U.K. based on what their figures were like three months earlier and how quickly they locked down. They would be looking at the situation we are in at that time...and no one knows what that will be yet.

So whilst I look forward to my end of July vacation with some caution, I also think it’s fine to stay hopeful for now. Fingers crossed that in twelve weeks time, we are looking better than Germany is looking now, so we’ll be valued tourists again.

There are people that won’t want to travel and there are people who question whether insurance would cover. But the fact is that some insurance policies will cover (particularly if you took them out prior to the pandemic) and some people, like you and I are willing to travel and take the holiday if it goes ahead.

(Yes, I’m willing to quarantine for two weeks on return if necessary, I’m off work then anyway - I know someone’s going to say it).

ViciousJackdaw · 06/05/2020 23:00

So you want people to lie to you then?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/05/2020 07:33

Probably should add that I'm in the lucky position of having insurance which would cover me. I have a continuous staff policy (work in insurance) which has been renewed year after year.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/brits-barred-europe-summer-holidays-21986598.amp

Even if allowed to travel, Europe may not want us due to our shitshow of a Government. A vision of a no deal brexit maybe.

Must apply for my Irish passport soon.

ifonly4 · 07/05/2020 07:44

We have a camping trip booked 50 miles away for end July, as this goes on I'm less confident it'll go ahead.

DBML · 07/05/2020 08:25

@ViciousJackdaw

Why would you be lying if you don’t actually know yet?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/05/2020 08:29

The usual speculation bollocks with 0% fact in it from the Mirror.

BA announced they are preparing to fly at 50% capacity from July. All being well of course and depending on travel restrictions. But this is the thinking of the travel industry at least, so fingers crossed.

Pomegranatepompom · 07/05/2020 11:47

@DBML

Interesting !

bengalcat · 07/05/2020 13:12

Certainly if my flight / holiday to Iceland is going in July and there ( at least at the time go ) is no 14 day quarantine on arrival or return then we’re off .

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/05/2020 16:00

What I wonder with the whole 50% capacity thing is what happens if the flight is already fully booked? Will they put on another plane?

OP posts:
DBML · 07/05/2020 17:31

I have no idea? I’m guessing quite a number of people will have cancelled/rearranged, so there may be scope for this capacity.

notimagain · 07/05/2020 17:52

Just a few days ago, France made it clear that its proposed 14 day quarantine didn't apply to visitors from the EU (and the UK).

Well true, no quarantine for anyone entitled to enter from the EU/UK but as was announced earlier this (Thursday) PM France is keeping it's Borders closed to all bar those with such entitlement (and unless you are a French resident it's a short list, essential workers, etc) until at least 15th June.

notimagain · 07/05/2020 18:00

As for BA being "prepared to fly at 50% from July"...the Sky report says:

"But it warned that passenger capacity would still be running at no more than 50% - even if services were able to resume in July in time for the traditional summer holiday peak as demand for flights would also likely be severely dented."

That's ties in with the message from the BA CEO which was "we will not get back to 2019 flying until 2023.."

I don't think anybody in the overseas travel industry is realistically expected in to be operating at anything like 50% in July.

DBML · 07/05/2020 19:20

@notimagain

So there’s a chance that some summer holidays might go ahead then, if there has been no 2nd peak.

Of course airline usage isn’t going to be the same for years. And of course demand for flights this summer is going to be severely reduced. But it doesn’t rule out some flights going ahead, if of course travel is permitted by then.

That’s good enough for me!

OvaHere · 07/05/2020 19:21

I cancelled our Aug holiday to Spain. Even if there was an outside chance it would go ahead I don't want to go with all the likely quarantine and distancing measures put in place.

My biggest concern would be travel insurance and where we would stand if one of us took ill with Covid symptoms requiring medical treatment. Even if it's a low probability this would happen a holiday isn't exactly a holiday if it's built on uncertainty and a level of anxiety.

Like everyone else I'm disappointed but if as predicted travel is disrupted for the next couple of years I've decided to plan ahead and save up a few years worth of money (if possible) to have a more bucket list type holiday once life is more normal.

I may have spent this afternoon virtually cruising down the Californian coast via youtube. Grin
