Am I the only deluded one clinging on to a tiny bit of hope for our July holiday?

Yeah I know it's selfish to be worried about holidays what with everything else which is going on, but I've already had to cancel one at Easter. I'm sure there are a fair few of us who can't wait to get away. We're booked to go to Spain mid July, staying in a private apartment so no shared accommodation/hotel to worry about. Spain are starting to ease restrictions. I think they are going to need tourism to start up soon as long as they can be sure it's safe.

Is anyone else still holding on to a tiny bit of hope for a summer holiday? I really can't be the only one, can I?

No you aren't alone, we have pushed a June trip back to late July and are pretty confident that it will be ok (staying with family).

DBML · 04/05/2020 17:22

Remember op, posters are just giving their opinions...they don’t know that we won’t go as much as we don’t know we will go.

All we know is that if we CAN go, we will go. And nothing wrong with keeping Ty ode fingers crossed!

DBML · 04/05/2020 17:23

That’s should say
‘Keeping those fingers crossed’ but of course my phone is conspiring to make me look illiterate.

MustBeThursday · 04/05/2020 17:25

Still clinging on to the tiny tiny selfish hope of going on our end of July holiday also to Spain. Eldest DC has been counting down the days since we booked it last year and she will be devastated.

okiedokieme · 04/05/2020 17:25

@DBML

Spot on. The people I know in real life who are being so negative are the antisocial types who are loving lockdown. Some people seem to be relishing in keeping people in. The reality is that we need to live with this new virus just like other countries have to, until we have a vaccine and possibly for ever. I don't want to even imagine the consequences for the leisure industry if something isn't done, this is about real people, real livelihoods.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/05/2020 17:26

I'm not sure how much fun a package type holiday on the Spanish costa would be in such circumstances.

To be fair ours isn't a package holiday. We visit the same small town in Spain every year and stay in private self catering accommodation. So it's a little bit different to mixing with tons of people in a big hotel.

But yeah, no one knows for certain, obviously. I was just interested to know how optimistic people were feeling.

I've postponed my UK holiday for July until next summer. It might be possible to travel but I'm guessing it's unlikely that restaurants, theme parks etc will be open for business as usual and that's a big part of going on holiday for us, if I want to go out for walks away from everyone else and cook every night I'd rather save the bother of travelling. The holiday company has been good with letting us transfer our deposit over to a 2021 date. If things are looking ok we might book a last minute short UK break for later in the summer just before the schools go back but I'm not getting my hopes up.

rawlikesushi · 04/05/2020 17:27

There is some talk of domestic holidays resuming but Spain has made it clear that they don't want vast numbers of foreign tourists.

We had a holiday to Spain booked for the beginning of August and the hotel emailed today to offer a full refund.

Ilovecats14 · 04/05/2020 17:28

We have one booked for August I've told myself its cancelled as can't see it happening.

TheThingWithFeathers · 04/05/2020 17:28

staying in a private apartment so no shared accommodation/hotel to worry about
Are you going on a private plane as well?! I think it's highly unlikely to go ahead, sorry. I wouldn't want to travel anywhere in July even if I could.

maria860 · 04/05/2020 17:30

I think you are a little I don't see Hols going ahead we have basically had to write the whole year off haven't we.
It's the first time I've not gone away so glad I didn't book now but I'm having a baby and wanted one last holiday with my older kids so I'm sad I'm hoping I can go to my moms holiday home in Wales we shall see

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/05/2020 17:30

Erm I wish @TheThingWithFeathers! No, of course not. I'm well aware of the risks of flying but if the airlines are operating that'll be up to individuals to decide whether to take the risk or not.

I've sort of given up on our long weekend in a cottage by the sea at the end of June, but I'm really really hoping I get to visit family in NI in August. I didn't get to go at Easter and I miss them terribly.

AuditAngel · 04/05/2020 17:43

We were supposed to be visiting Poland in early July for a sporting event. It has been deferred to early September, but you can’t fight in karate and maintain social distancing. I expect this will be cancelled. Flights already changed once, and one hotel booking, plus car hire all for free. We were supposed to weekend in Berlin first, hotel wants 90% to cancel, so I am holding out hoping they are forced to cancel, so they don’t charge!

Our family holiday is Spain, family owned property, due to travel 31/7, fairly resigned to it being cancelled.

Also have a week in Cornwall May half term. The baptism is already cancelled, but I have not yet cancelled the B&B, we have both agreed to wait and see, with a potential last minute cancellation on either side,

RWeatherwax · 04/05/2020 17:43

I’m clinging onto hope for our October holiday. We’ve already lost our short trip at the end of May

Anjelika · 04/05/2020 17:48

OP - we are in the same boat as you. Booked a villa in Spain for 2 weeks flying out at end of July. I am desperately hoping we'll be able to go as I think we'll have had absolutely enough of being at home but I am not expecting it to go ahead.

Moreisnnogedag · 04/05/2020 17:51

You think you’re delusional hoping for a July holiday? I’m still hopeful for our camping trip... in two weeks... with another family. That’ll be fine right??

Missillusioned · 04/05/2020 17:54

I've got a weeks self catering in Duinrell Holland booked first week in August. I'm still thinking it might go ahead, but as it's a theme park based holiday with a pool I'm probably deluding myself

hanahsaunt · 04/05/2020 17:59

We cancelled our August holiday to Italy yesterday :( We will still have the time off work so plan to be spontaneous with travel with whatever might be possible by then.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/05/2020 18:00

Totally fine @Moreisnnogedag 😂 - we can all hope!

I should add that my Easter holiday has been rearranged for first week in Sept, and I also have a week in Oct booked. (Was booked before all this started). Ever the optimist! I reckon I'll get to go on at least one of them.

Ginfordinner · 04/05/2020 18:01

What is the point of only wanting to be told what you want to hear? No-one really knows, but I think it is very unlikely TBH.

Moreisnnogedag · 04/05/2020 18:04

Come on Gin its obvious what this thread is - its not a genuine ‘is this likely?’ But more of a shared ‘head in the sand wishful thinking’ kind of thread

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/05/2020 18:04

As I said below: But yeah, no one knows for certain, obviously. I was just interested to know how optimistic people were feeling.

Paddingtonthebear · 04/05/2020 18:06

We’ve moved our August Spain holiday to next year. I just can’t see it being possible this year. The Balearic government have said tourism won’t likely start until August and that would be on a moderate basis and probably Spanish tourists first then after August they will consider other counties. They did imply that British tourists may be further down the list because we were late to lockdown.

I work in a sports based business and a return to work in September at the earliest is the best we are hoping for at the moment 🙁

Moreisnnogedag · 04/05/2020 18:07

We’re in a game of email chicken with the campsite owners - I think they are hopeful if they don’t cancel they Don’t have to refund us. What they don't realise is is if they don't cancel we are going!
