Am I the only deluded one clinging on to a tiny bit of hope for our July holiday?

Yeah I know it's selfish to be worried about holidays what with everything else which is going on, but I've already had to cancel one at Easter. I'm sure there are a fair few of us who can't wait to get away. We're booked to go to Spain mid July, staying in a private apartment so no shared accommodation/hotel to worry about. Spain are starting to ease restrictions. I think they are going to need tourism to start up soon as long as they can be sure it's safe.

Is anyone else still holding on to a tiny bit of hope for a summer holiday? I really can't be the only one, can I?

We're due to go to Greece at the end of August but am not holding out much hope. If we can't we'll still take the two weeks off and hopefully get a break in the UK.

On the other hand my boss who has been having cancer treatment cannot wait until she can get on a plane to her home in Spain. She has no qualms about flying at all.

maresydoats · 04/05/2020 19:02

Holidays are stressful anyway for many with young kids and maybe teenagers.

Great excuse to back out. Can't see the enjoyment unless it is just me and him alone. Love kids, don't get me wrong, but they will survive, the parents might not!

Polydolly7 · 04/05/2020 19:13

We have just cancelled our August holiday and moved it to next August. Regardless of what is allowed I don’t want to the risk. I would still go to a UK hotel though if they are open or a cottage, I just don’t want to be too far from home just in case.

PlanDeRaccordement · 04/05/2020 19:29

I was holding on to hope for my mid-July holiday but the airline emailed me today saying I needed to apply for a voucher for new flights to take in next two years. :(

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/05/2020 19:32

Oh no, which airline was that?

I've got a family member in Greece (working in a govt department) and apparently they're doing everything they can to try and stop the tourism industry from missing the summer season. Who knows if they'll succeed but there may be some home. Fingers crossed.

IcedPurple · 04/05/2020 19:37

Greece is the European country most dependent on tourism - apparently one fifth of it's population is directly employed in the industry. Given that they're only now emerging from a severe economic downturn lasting 10 years, I can easily understand that they'll want to get the tourism industry going again if at all possible. Whether and when it will be remains to be seen... but I hope it's soon!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/05/2020 19:44

Only just seen Ireland's exit plan which says no foreign travel til early August. I'm in the UK but I can't see us doing anything very different to this 🙁

Chewbecca · 04/05/2020 19:46

We’ve just cancelled our early July holiday (Italy) as the balance was requested and I couldn’t bring myself to hand it over.

I still need to sort the flights which were booked separately with
BA and we can move or request a voucher for them now.

I’m still holding out a small hope for our October cruise...

Lucindainthesky · 04/05/2020 19:47

Tbh if there's a significant second wave here or abroad then foreign travel could be off the cards next year too.

I work in theatre. We are currently planning for an October reopen at the earliest, although that's obviously far from definite and within the industry there is talk that theatre shows might not resume until NEXT AUTUMN. I know this isn't travel, but just some perspective into things potentially not returning to normal for quite some time.

I'm sorry if it sounds negative but I think it's less disappointing to be realistic.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/05/2020 19:50

God it's bloody depressing.

*Goes to fridge for chocolate as might as well get fat(ter) if I won't get to wear a bikini

But neither the UK nor Ireland has closed its borders, and flights (albeit very few in number) are still entering and leaving. I don't think they will stop people leaving the country, though if they advise on all but essential travel then that would make it impossible to get travel insurance.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/05/2020 19:54

Exactly @IcedPurple - no one is going to travel against FCO advice.

Op,

Stay focused on nobody knows.

Look, the way I see it, if my holiday doesn’t go ahead, I’ll feel miserable. Due to my job, it’ll be a year until I can go again. That’s a year to feel miserable at my leisure.
Why add 3 extra months to that?

Who knows what will happen before the summer. If numbers look good and countries are worrying about economies, then you never know how quickly we will work through the phases.

You’re overwhelmingly going to get posters on MN saying:
No chance
You’ll be lucky to travel for 3-4 years
Travel will never be the same
Travel is now only for the rich
You’re mad even thinking about it
You’re selfish even thinking about it
Bla bla bla.

They haven’t got a clue op. They don’t know. None of us know.

So, do you want an extra 3 months of feeling depressed? Or do you want to cautiously hope for the best, until otherwise told.

And one other thing, you could spend the next 2-3 months worrying and feeling down about your holiday, only for it to happen...and then what was the point?

So, keep positive. Know that if you don’t make it on hols, it’s not forever... but in the meantime, stay off mumsnet. It should tell you something that some of the posters saying no chance, are the same posters hoping they’ll be able to stay home isolating, in some cases until there’s a vaccine.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 04/05/2020 20:15

Great pep talk @DBML - thanks! Smile

Have you checked your travel insurance for what will happen if there's another lockdown while you are out there?

Even if travel is permitted, it is worth checking the small print of insurance policies to make sure you are covered. I know that our travel insurers have removed any cover for this pandemic from their policies at renewal. The thought of going anywhere without full insurance really puts me off.

QuimReaper · 04/05/2020 21:07

France is already saying they will let Brits in without needing to quarantine.

That's encouraging @Noooblerooble, where did you hear that?

Do,you realise you will, have absolutely no insurance cover at all, including medical or repatriation if you change the date?

Chewbecca · 04/05/2020 22:00

Well normalmum a refund isn’t on offer and we are unlikely to need the July flight to Italy so a voucher seems like the best option.

Chewbecca · 04/05/2020 22:01

Surely all future travel will be without insurance against a pandemic? We either accept that or never travel again.

thewheelsonthebus23 · 04/05/2020 22:07

We have a UK break booked at the end of July. I’m still hoping it’ll go ahead.

TravellingSpoon · 04/05/2020 22:42

I swing from resigned that we we wont be going to Tenerife in the summer to blind optimism that we will with no inbetween.

I am currently paying just under £200 a month to Tui for a holiday I probably wont go on and it sucks.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 05/05/2020 08:42

I'm now making plan B's in my head (but they do still involve travel this year!)

Well, a refund might not be on offer, but they legally have to give you a refund...is the law. They like others are trying it on..understandably though.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 05/05/2020 09:01

Yep agree with the post above - anyone who is being forced to take vouchers at the moment can challenge it and request a refund. It's the law.
