Am I the only deluded one clinging on to a tiny bit of hope for our July holiday?

Yeah I know it's selfish to be worried about holidays what with everything else which is going on, but I've already had to cancel one at Easter. I'm sure there are a fair few of us who can't wait to get away. We're booked to go to Spain mid July, staying in a private apartment so no shared accommodation/hotel to worry about. Spain are starting to ease restrictions. I think they are going to need tourism to start up soon as long as they can be sure it's safe.

Is anyone else still holding on to a tiny bit of hope for a summer holiday? I really can't be the only one, can I?

Just had a newsflash to say the 14 day isolation for visitors to the UK will start on 8 June

Ridiculous to do it now, of course, but since when did common sense come into it?

The Uk public have been calling for a quarantine...HMG hold it off as long as possible..in fact so long it is, as you say puzzeled"rediculous to do it now". Nevertheless it is announced and HMG can as a result tick the "seen to be listening to the voters" box.

Come 8th of June the data quite possibly won't support quarantine inbound to the UK anymore, people will be becoming more vocal about wanting to travel, so at the last minute the idea gets dropped, and HMG tick both the "seen to be listening to the science" box and the "seen to be listening to the voters box.

Cynical? Moi?

Hmmm, not looking good for Spain.

Nor for France, as they've said as soon as we implement a quarantine requirement for them they'll put one in place for us Angry

QuimReaper · 23/05/2020 10:46

notim I do hope you're right, although many people will probably cancel based on that pretence and then be livid if doesn't come to pass!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 23/05/2020 11:28

Extremely annoying that due to Boris's utter shitness no one is going to want UK tourists. 😡

No mention of not letting Brits in here though...

It's pretty extraordinary that other EU countries are now making noises about lifting all border restrictions from June 15th, whilst the UK is still insisting on imposing quarantine from the 8th! We're so out of step.

QuimReaper · 26/05/2020 13:22

On the whole, it looks like everything is really starting up again:

I wouldn't be surprised if the UK quarantine plans end up getting benched, and would be amazed if they're still in place by July if they do go ahead. And I think Spain in July will be absolutely fine!

HairyFloppins · 26/05/2020 13:23

I can see the quarantine thing getting dropped as well.

I think it will run for three weeks till the end of June, ready for July holidays to start.

ClashCityRocker · 26/05/2020 13:30

Yep I suspect the quarantine will be over by the time schools break up.

I live in a tourist city that gets a lot of overseas visitors and I know a lot of the industry chiefs are pushing it.

Whilst the seaside and countryside may well benefit from Brits choosing staycations, they're not sure this will translate into the same for city breaks.

Still holding my breath for my mid-July uk based holiday... I think if things carry on as planned we may just be OK.

Buzzfrightyears · 26/05/2020 13:32

I am meant to be going to Disneyland Paris mid August. Who fancies my chances? Hmm

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/05/2020 14:26

I do hope so, but it's not just about the quarantine. Right now the FCO's still advising against all but essential travel, and if they don't lift that peoples' travel insurance will be void if they still wish to go

Hopefully the FCO will develop a bit of sense where safer countries are concerned, but we all know what government departments are like for foot-dragging

Mbc124 · 26/05/2020 14:32

It will all open up and then will close down again when it spikes. Just reading that a continent ship has docked in Western Australia with a crew of around 50 and 6 of them have got this. Fortunately they are being checked at the ports and have been sent straight to quarantine. Unless they bring in measures to test people at the airport before they go I can’t see how this isn’t an accident waiting to happen

I'm no expert in these things, but I believe that's exactly what some airports are discussing doing. Let's face it they're not going to give up their livelihoods without a fight and there's no point in waiting for government to decide these things, so they'll sensibly take the lead themselves
