Am I the only deluded one clinging on to a tiny bit of hope for our July holiday?

Yeah I know it's selfish to be worried about holidays what with everything else which is going on, but I've already had to cancel one at Easter. I'm sure there are a fair few of us who can't wait to get away. We're booked to go to Spain mid July, staying in a private apartment so no shared accommodation/hotel to worry about. Spain are starting to ease restrictions. I think they are going to need tourism to start up soon as long as they can be sure it's safe.

Is anyone else still holding on to a tiny bit of hope for a summer holiday? I really can't be the only one, can I?

Got a Haven booked for 1st week in August. Finally payment due next month. I'm thinking it's a no. Can you imagine all those adults and kids packed in to the entertainment room for the Seaside Squad in the evening??! "Come join us?!" No thanks! 😂 Love a Haven holiday though 😕

Chewbecca · 05/05/2020 09:18

Our flight has not (yet) been cancelled so legally I am not entitled to a refund.

BA are still running some flights.

Hadenoughfornow · 05/05/2020 09:25

What I'm thinking of book a Havens holiday in August!

I do have a holiday booked to Spain in August but we are not planning to go. We have only paid deposit at moment and will cancel just before we have to pay balance. (Another month so hoping it has been cancelled and we get our deposit back)

If I'm honest, even if we could go i don't fancy paying over £3k for a holiday of social distancing.

And then if I go on holiday in the UK we help UK seaside towns a bit.

Polydolly7 · 05/05/2020 09:37

@Hadenoughfornow

Problem with this will be if the other 10m who were going abroad all decide to do the same. This is why I don’t think they will relax UK holidays either. Seaside towns, campsites etc could be inundated with people especially a after a lengthy lockdown when people will be chomping at the bit to get away.

thenightsky · 05/05/2020 09:38

I've got a First Choice holiday booked for 1st week of July and I'm fully expecting to have to reschedule it. I will probably pick the same week next year to move it to, as I do not think its worth attempting this year, sadly.

Figgygal · 05/05/2020 09:41

I’m writing this year off
No point of even planning much this year our normal has gone with the need for social distancing it’ll make everything less fun

barbites · 05/05/2020 09:48

Keeping fingers crossed for France in August. Booked the boat in case social distancing reduces numbers allowed on...

noraclavicle · 05/05/2020 09:53

There’s no harm in being optimistic! We have a villa & Easyjet flights booked for late July. Usually go early August but DH with his uncanny ability insisted we do it earlier this time. But am not cancelling or changing anything until absolutely forced to and all hope fades.

Those of you who are interested in Spain, I had this email today from a rental agent I've used in the past:-

*For those that might be interested in coming to Spain this year to visit family, friends or are simply curious about where the Spanish nation has got to so far, we will be providing periodic updates like this.

The current announcement is as follows as regards tourism to Spain:

The plan is split into four phases, beginning from 4th May. Holiday Rentals and Hotels will be allowed to open from Phase II, estimated to be around 18th May. Hotels will not be allowed to have open pools/common areas but this doesn’t apply to Holiday Rentals.
This will vary by province: Rural and island provinces (frequented by tourists) are expected to open first, as they have a low virus penetration so far. Cities, especially Madrid and Barcelona will likely be held back.
However, this does not mean international tourism will be open from 18th May. First will be internal tourism by province, region and national. Only after will be international tourism.
The Spanish government hopes to finish their de-escalation program by June.
The Spanish economy relies heavily on tourism (about 21% of the economy), and the Spanish government is keen to open for summer if possible and is getting pressure from regional governors like Canary Islands and Andalucia. Plenty of great people, Spanish and permanent residents, rely on tourism to feed their families - bars, restaurants, shops.

In short, for those considering the summer, it is likely that July will be a possibility and August and September will be likely. Many Spanish festivals are being moved to August & September.*

You've made my bleak morning a bit less bleak with that Spanish update op. I refuse to give up hope..

FinallyHere · 05/05/2020 10:51

I've read right through this thread, while waiting for a (Skype) appointment.

It's the first thing I have ever read that shows why politicians don't bother so much with the truth. People openly saying they don't want the honest answer, they just want to dream it will all be OK.

I'm sure we all understand the wish to 'get away' on holiday. It's great to be optimistic.

I am a pretty happy person but even I recognise that it's also important to have a plan about what you would do if things went wrong. For example, if you or a member of the family developed symptoms of COVID-19 when away.

Would you try and fly back anyway?

If not, where would you live? What would you live on?

How many people on that plane are asymptotic carriers and spreaders of the virus?

Travel insurance is not going to cover any things resulting from this virus. It's difficult to remember how things were before air travel was so affordable but ...

One of the things that had made travel so affordable for so many people since the '70s is the ever lowering of costs. Now, if only a few people are prepared to travel by plane, the cost of each plane flight is going to be a lot higher than before.

All in all, I'm not allowing myself to do anything other than dream about foreign travel for a good long time yet.

cailingaelach · 05/05/2020 11:10

I'm in Ireland, we've been advised by our Minister for Health that foreign holidays are highly unlikely this year and even if we can go we would need to isolate for two weeks on our return home. This will rule it out for us anyway. We were meant to be going to Italy in August.

Mammaaof · 05/05/2020 11:12

Hi my holiday to Spain end of June/begining of July has been cancelled this morning X

JustStayHome · 05/05/2020 11:15

No way

Would be very surprised if ANY holidays were taking place before September atleast
If not longer

Alondra · 05/05/2020 11:19

I don't know who your rental agent is OP, but they are generally giving the right information but ignoring one important factor - the won't be international tourism this summer season in Spain. Canary Islands is hoping to open 50% to international tourism in October-November, and that's the earliest Spain will be open to international visitors. (that's if everything goes well and there is no 2nd wave)

Tourism in the rest of the country is grateful to open even with restrictions (50% of terrazas, no AirBnB, and 40% capacity hotels and hostals ) to national tourism. Many places in the Balearic Islands (Majorca, Ibiza and Formentora) are looking forward to a quieter summer with only national tourism and are already flagging a change in future business - less cheap mass tourism and more exclusive expensive deals.

Don't expect to travel to Spain on holidays this summer - it won't happen.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 05/05/2020 11:30

I think there are obviously still lots of unknowns @alondra and a lot is going to depend on how things go when they ease their measures, but it's a very sweeping statement to say that there will be no travel to Spain at all this summer.

OP posts:
Alondra · 05/05/2020 11:49

It's not a sweeping statement chocolatesaltyballs22, it's listening to the Spanish government, state governments, business owners .....everyone is saying the same thing - there won't be international tourism in Spain this summer. When the Spanish government is talking about opening the country and economy in different phases is not referring to international tourism. There was talk of opening a "safe international corridor" with Germany, and it was quickly shot down by both Spain and Germany.

Spain ended up being the third largest country in the world with COVID19 deaths thanks to being a sitting duck to the virus being introduced by mass tourism. If you think that Spain is going to allow having a 2nd wave with a bigger amount of deaths when we have not yet recovered from the first, you are delusional.

IcedPurple · 05/05/2020 16:27

For what it's worth...

www.theguardian.com/business/2020/may/05/wizz-air-resume-flights-portugal-greece-luton-coronavirus-safety

*Wizz Air has said it will restart holiday flights from Luton airport to Portugal in mid-June and to Greece in July in the hope that Covid-19 travel restrictions will be lifted.

Announcing five new routes, the low-cost airline said from 16 June flights would depart from the London airport to Faro in Portugal, with prices starting at £25.99, and to Corfu, Heraklion, Rhodes and Zakynthos in Greece from the start of July.*

Skinandbones · 05/05/2020 16:36

Mine is July, in Wales in a very small caravan park. I've got everything crossed that it might be open. Fingers crossed for you too.

blue25 · 05/05/2020 16:44

No way. We’ve cancelled our August holiday. Would you really want to get on a plane anyway?

sestras · 05/05/2020 16:57

I'm hoping to get to my caravan by June/July

We moved our abroad holiday to next year.

Crayfishforyou · 05/05/2020 17:03

We have the Balearics booked for end of July.
Unfortunately, unless we turn German, antibody tests are distributed, or a vaccine magically appears and there is enough for everyone I doubt we will be going.
I only really want to go if we are able to sight see, eat out, use the pool, enjoy the beach etc or it just wouldn't be fun.

BackInTime · 05/05/2020 17:16

Cannot imagine domestic resorts live Haven and Centre Parcs opening this summer or theme parks. Large groups sharing facilities like indoor pools, changing rooms etc would be a nightmare.

Mammaaof · 05/05/2020 17:47

@Crayfishforyou Balearic island we were supposed to go begining July and it's been cancelled X

btsky · 05/05/2020 19:16

I can see German holidaymakers being allowed to travel as they seem to be so far ahead of the game with testing and I can see some places welcoming them. Brits I can’t see. We are just a long way from our own lockdown being relaxed to the extent Germany are doing (Beer gardens in Bavaria opening 18 May)

We have rebooked to next year
