Am I the only deluded one clinging on to a tiny bit of hope for our July holiday?

Yeah I know it's selfish to be worried about holidays what with everything else which is going on, but I've already had to cancel one at Easter. I'm sure there are a fair few of us who can't wait to get away. We're booked to go to Spain mid July, staying in a private apartment so no shared accommodation/hotel to worry about. Spain are starting to ease restrictions. I think they are going to need tourism to start up soon as long as they can be sure it's safe.

Is anyone else still holding on to a tiny bit of hope for a summer holiday? I really can't be the only one, can I?

I'm booked for Madeira on 30th June for a week. I specifically booked a walking holiday I've always wanted to do but couldn't due to arthritis. Hip replacement before Xmas means I can fulfill my dream. I'm back to hoping again now... Smile

QuimReaper · 21/05/2020 13:34

I'm glad it isn't just me Smile

QuimReaper · 21/05/2020 13:35

Things seem to be changing very rapidly, so I don't think it's unreasonable to hope that in 5-6 weeks' time things will look and feel really quite different.

Would be nice if people would start making actual decisions so people can plan accordingly though...

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 21/05/2020 13:39

Yes I totally agree.

Our favourite bar where we go every summer in Spain is reopening tomorrow - this makes me very very happy.

Having to stay in quarantine upon return to UK might be an issue for some who have to be able to go out.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 21/05/2020 13:52

True, however who's to say how long that restriction will stay in place? I can't see it being in place all summer. The government want the travel industry back up and running and that requirement is going to put some people off. Having said that I don't know how or if they will police it? Probably not. So people just won't do it.

love yes, absolutely, I think a lot of people are prepared to quarantine on return though, or at least to put themselves back into lockdown should family visits / restaurants be open by their planned return date. I know my friend who is dying to visit her family in Italy has said she'll go as soon as she's allowed, whatever the consequences on her return, as it'll hardly be different to the present circumstances.

QuimReaper · 21/05/2020 14:09

I personally think the quarantine will fizzle out quite quickly if we end up being the only European country with it in place.

QuimReaper · 21/05/2020 14:10

x-post chocolate!

grannycake · 21/05/2020 14:26

I had an email yesterday from a camping company that I have used in France. They are planning on opening to foreign tourists in July - lots of caveats around if the situation remains the same but it does give hope

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/05/2020 16:53

Let's remember that it's not actually been implemented yet. In any case many scientists are pointing out that it makes no sense to do this now when they didn't bother back in March, especially when alternatives are available

Personally I've often thought it a ploy to control the powerful airline/leisure lobby, as in "see what we'll do if you don't shut up", but time will tell

fairgame84 · 21/05/2020 16:56

Feeling more hopeful for my September wedding in Tunisia. Fingers crossed 🤞

Bramblebear92 · 21/05/2020 16:58

The amount of doom and gloom early on in this thread! It just goes to show no one actually has a clue. I also find it odd that people are envisaging all UK holidays will be cancelled this year. It'd be a bit weird if we can all fly to Greece/France/Italy but can't go to an Air B&B in our own country. Although knowing the UK it sounds about right really 😂

HairyFloppins · 21/05/2020 17:00

How would they enforce quarantine? How have other countries been handling it. Do they send someone round to your house everyday?

I'm alright I'm a SAHM. Will have to go on holiday by myself Grin

notimagain · 21/05/2020 17:15

Examples I know off:

An App...- and you'd better answer your mobile if it rings,

Phone call to the landline number you are registered at, same comment applies about making sure you answer,

Random police visits..

and some countries really mean business - you never know who is watching..

I think the hope has been to terrify folk by suggesting they could, but frankly I doubt there are enough personnel to do it

I suppose they could always give it to the local clipboard busybodies, though; they'd probably be absolutely delighted to volunteer

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 21/05/2020 17:22

I don't have a landline. Not many people do these days.

It's all a bit Big Brother! But personally I think that given the police didn't really manage to control those who were breaking lockdown rules, they haven't got a hope in hell of making sure that thousands of people quarantine after coming back from a holiday! It's laughable really.

Also, how many people on MN are just DESPERATE for no one to travel this year?!

'What about the 14 day quarantine period's
'What about travel insurance'

Etc etc

OP posts:

The dementors you mean? They're absolutely all over the place, on every competitive doom thread. Ask "how long" such-and-such will be and it's:

September
After Christmas (which will of course be a washout)
Summer 2021
Only when there's a vaccine
Not for two or three years
At some future point measurable only in geological time
Or failing all those, just "never" ...

HairyFloppins · 21/05/2020 17:43

The job of quarantine curtain snitch would be perfect for next door.

The dementors don't really want anyone going anywhere for years.

I can't wait to get back to the USA. I am part of a Facebook group and all the restaurants and shows are opening up now. I am very jealous.

Maybe in the UK but I was answering in the context of this thread being about holidays overseas ( hence my examples)..I wouldn't go on holiday to wherever and assume all governments are going to be as relaxed about enforcing any quarantine as HMG may be.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/05/2020 19:03

Yes, that's a very fair point and another thing to check about whatever the destination is ...

Mtbf · 21/05/2020 20:59

I would have thought the government would want travel in this country back on first given the boost to our own economy. Travelling abroad boosts other countries more so not sure that will take priority over our own.

Tui have extended their free change to bookings today to holidays up to 31 Aug.

starfish18 · 21/05/2020 21:20

hiya we are praying everyday we can go on our holiday the 11th July to Crete...we are flying with Ryanair and we've saw that the owner wants flights back up and running the start of July...we are hoping that Crete will allow us in as they haven't had much of the virus...it's just 50/50 and won't no till possibly 2-3 weeks before if the flight is cancelled...usually I'm really prepared regarding clothes etc but we arnt buying anything yet xx

notimagain · 21/05/2020 21:21

That's one way of looking but theres a chunk of the UK economy that makes it's living, so to speak, facilitating travel abroad.
