Says Chris Witty. Nothing unexpected but I really wish they would say what they're talking about when they say shit like this. What does "some" mean? Schools? WFH? Family visits?

@Inkpaperstars So I am hoping they know what they are doing, and I am hoping that measures to enable lockdown to be lifted asap are being ramped up.

Agreed! Thank you for the kind words about my family, and I wish yours well too.

@Sostenueto

I fear that your own personal and family circumstances are clouding your judgement on the response, in the exact same way my personal and family circumstances are clouding mine.

We're both being selfish and that's okay. That's human.

Sostenueto · 24/04/2020 07:35

snyde Saving other people's lives is not selfish. That is why I agree lockdown should not end too early just because of my circumstances. How you interpret what I said as selfish is a bit off TBH.

SnydeValley · 24/04/2020 08:05

@Sostenueto it's the saving covid lives with little thought to all the other factors involved (including non-covid related deaths) that I find selfish.

But like I said, I think everyone is selfish to some degree, and I understand why you would want to prioritise the safety of your high-risk self and family.

I'd want the same in your circumstances.

I drove to work this morning and there seemed to be lots of traffic on the road, much more than there was 4 weeks ago. I think people are getting fed up now and more places are opening up again.

Cary2012 · 24/04/2020 13:02

Hancock said on Sky News this morning that lots of businesses were opening up again. When questioned whether this was a problem, he said that a lot of business' took the decision to close themselves, and they didn't need to close in the first place. This might explain the extra traffic.

I know what you mean snyde but I have already been told in veiled terms from my cancer specialist in early March that there's no chance of me getting a ventilator if God forbid I need one if I catch Covid. This government has already thrown away the over 70s because they were well aware that the losses in care homes and the community would be very high indeed but did nothing to protect them bar lockdown. No real ppe for care workers who have to go in and out both in care homes and the community thus spreading unknowingly the virus to their clients. ( DD a carer has now been told she would have to get to Stansted for a Covid test ( 130+ miles away)even though there is a test centre 30 miles away, none of which she could get to because she does not have a car only a pushbike, could not use public transport if showing symptoms ( which is only way she could get a test) and only got masks last week but told not to use them ( shortage) unless a client shows symptoms which is a bit late don't you think! Also as you have to be blue in face and practically not breathing before you can get into hospital many people dying at home plus as you rightly said deaths not from Covid but because of covid like cancer patients waiting for ops or appointments, heart attacks and strokes etc. The whole thing is a shambles and again your right in the fact that this lockdown can't go on forever. But the Government is going to have to choose who they keep alive, Covid patients or all those others. They will have to weigh up least loss. Do they save a 10 years old covid patient or do operations for cancer patients who may or may not survive anyway. This is what the goverenment is facing. And what they choose will have a deprimental effect on all of us. And lastly, how this government has handled the whole situation so far I have no faith they will make the right decision as if choosing who lives or dies us a good choice anyway!

@SnydeValley - if you are going tobe all over mumsnet declaring that people should go back to work and lifeshouldbe backtonormal, you should try and understand something about risk.

I am not sure where you got the value that your risk is

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 06:39

of the 6 people I know who tested positive, 3 said it was no worse than a mild cold, 2 said it was like a grotty virus but their symptoms were gone in a week, and one had no symptoms at all.

They just happen to understand this much better than you do, and are giving adivice to the best of their ability.....

But there isn't agreement even amongst epidemiologists. Look at what the top epidemiologist in Sweden thinks.

OP posts:
Sostenueto · 25/04/2020 06:53

Sweden has a higher rate of death than the other Scandinavian countries.

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 07:06

But less than many other European countries.

Fromcat are you in the UK. How can you know 6 people who weren't hospitalised with a positive test ? Were they on the diamond princess ? How did they get their tests ?

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 07:51

Two were in the UK. Both NHS frontline staff. The other four were in Germany.

So tested last week, I see they may be lucky or they might get worse. I take your point most cases are mild.

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 08:07

This was two weeks ago. They're both back at work now. They're a husband and wife. Their asthmatic child displayed no symptoms.

NHS staff testing has been in place for about 3 weeks. I tested positive just over 2 weeks ago and am back at work now.

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/04/2020 08:14

Yes I was going to say, my mum (NHS) was tested 2.5 weeks ago. She has recovered now and is back at work.

hopefulhalf · 25/04/2020 08:57

Sorry time goes a bit weird
